Ending explanation...?? help... SPOILER WARNING

Hi, i just saw this movie earlier tonight and thought that the story was brilliantly pieced together, but I am confused as to the ending..

I got as far as recognizing that the guy who shows up at Miyara (main character) is his colleague from work who wanted to borrow his apartment. He shows up at the same time Maki shows up (presumably to return the money).. then we have the end credits..

Whats the significance of that?

reply

Not sure... perhaps leaving the door open for a sequel? I would certainly welcome one. This one had me laughing so much. Loved it.

I recall Miyata's colleague needing his apartment for some sweet lovin' with a 24 year old nurse. I suppose they had decided to meet at Miyata's place about the same time. Must've been a blind date by the looks of it. But then again, wasn't the plan to make the date believe it was his colleagues' apartment?

reply

ya it make sense about the blind day thing, but it would be very sad tho...

reply

I don't think it's any blind date thing. In the end, she decides to return the money -- she rather give love a chance than living alone (though she'd be filthy rich). She just happen to show up at the same time the co-worker showed up, what this implies is that potential hilariousness may continue even after the movie ends -- eg. will Mayati assume her to be the co-worker's date? what will he do then? what are they all going to do when both couples wants to use that apt in that morning? yada yada yada...

Anyway, best Asian romanatic dramedy I've watched since My Sassy Girlfriend!

I AM... BORED!

Wasn't the nurse that Miyata's colleague referred to, actually Ayumi?

When the Yakuza boss visits the detective's office and flips through the pages of Ayumi's info that the detective had gathered... I could've sworn there was a picture of Ayumi dressed as a nurse.

I'll probably have to re-watch the film to check, but I'd be glad to since this movie is great!

reply

I just watched it a few hours ago...and I can confirm there was a picture of Ayumi as a fake-nurse in the file.

I'm not sure if that means your idea was correct, but it's possible.

maken9: I support your idea. Somehow the coleague got hooked up with Ayumi. That Miyata and Kanda still are at home in the morning is a result of the hard night they had. To me there is no connection between the coleague and Maki.
Maki returns the money without having opened the plastic bags.

I wonder if Kanda ever found out about the scam ;-)

Today is a good day to die! Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today.

reply

how is she gonna be rich if she keeps the money? the money is fake... remember? lol

one of the best part of the movie

reply

ya but she didn't know that, she never opened it up. To her it was a real choice.

Yes, the co-worker had said that he would come by on Saturday mornong and asked for a map to be used in finding the apartment. He is at the door, with this map in his hand. Maki shows up with her bags, and looks at the money in one of them as if making a decision, either to disappear with the money or return to the apartment. Does she even know who the money belongs to ?

The co-worker clearly said that he wanted the apartment for a date a midday. He then tells Miyata that he will come by in the morning. This is probably to set the apartment up (Billy Wilder style?) as his place before the actual date. This bars Maki from being that date, blind or not. You are right that the whole idea was to show off the place as his own so this is not the 24 year old nurse he wants to impress.

Yes, complications are likely to continue to happen.

Yes, as has already been verified, there is a picture in Kanda's file of Ayumi dressed as a nurse. Can she imitate a 24 year old since she is 33 years old? Would she use the same alias twice? Possibly, but I doubt it. If she was to be the date she will likely be a no-show after her new deal with mob boss Shinobu. She also would know the address having lived there for a week and having visited again the night before. I doubt she could be this date.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

The ending, with the co-worker showing up at the door, is a tie-in with the beginning of the movie for the purpose of reinforcing to the viewers which apartment door Maki is standing in front of.
For those viewers not paying as close attention, that last scene of Maki ringing a doorbell might be confusing, since the outside of Miyata's apartment isn't as established as some of the other locations in the movie. The only other time we see that outside balcony was when Miyata came home alone the previous night. Maki standing there in the ending, some people might wonder where she is, did she return to her fiance? Some might ask. The co-worker showing up reinforces the fact that it is Miyata's apartment she is in front of.

Cool! You're so smart!

This sums it up; I was confused about the ending until I read this post.

So if anyone needs anybody to make sense here it is on a silver platter!

reply

The first time I saw it I thought 'Even Myata lied when he gave directions to his apartment, because he was kind of reluctant of having the co-worker at his place, and somehow by pure coincidence, inline with the movie's spirit, gave the girl's fiance's address instead!'. Kind of a more pessimistic (realistic?!) end.

But the background is definitely not the same as in the beginning of the movie, so it's a pretty optimistic ending for sure ;)

Peace.
