just saw this at lincoln center

the friday 5pm showing. i figure at least one other person who was there today probably would check it's imdb page.
i was checking the imdb page before (at like 3pm) to find out anything about the movie; whether it was good or not, but noone wrote any reviews. i usually dont go see a movie i know almost nothing about, but i had nothing else to do and the $7 student price was the pull-in for me.
the theater was pretty full, near the end people were slouching and some people were even leaving. one person a couple of rows in front of me fell asleep once, and his friend gently poked him to wake him up. he apparently dozed off again as sometime after the midpoint of the film, he just walked away, kind of dozed, as if he just woke up. the loong scene near the end (possible spoilers:) with the climactic "noise" he was playing for the girl was just way too long in my opinion. i mean, i was tired to begin with so i just looked on, but wow- did that scene itself go on for 20 minutes? i was wondering when he would end already.
when the movie ended some people bolted out the second the first credit started rolling up. i thought the movie was fine, kinda boring at times, extremely slow paced at times, some scenes just went on for too long, and the overarching plot was pretty silly. anyone else saw this tonight, or some other day and wanna share their thoughts.

Yes, I was also at that showing. I love the lead actor, and I had heard it was pretty good from someone else. I also found it a bit slow, and somewhat sleepy. Experimental Noise music tends to make me sleepy anyways, no matter how loud it is. I worked at a store once that specialized in that type of music, so it doesn't really have the same effect on me that it would on the average person. I didn't notice people falling asleep, but I wasn't really looking for it. I must say though, I was actually surprised at how many people stayed for the credits, since most were in Japanese. My main thought about the film is that it is really beautiful to look at, and the acting was generally really good. The story was a bit thin for my taste, but I wouldn't say that I didn't like it, just that it would really depend on the mood I was in.

just got back from the sunday 6pm showing. i'll agree with both of you guys on the slow pace and individual scenes dragging on too long, though i though the noise rock scene in the field was excellent(it was probably more like 7 or 8 minutes, which is actually pretty long).
the crowd tonight didn't seem that bored, and no one that i could see fell asleep. no one bolted when it was over, it was a slow gathering of coats and some people sitting through the credits(why, i don't know. they were in japanese).
it got a fair amount of laughs, actually. it was also packed. i was surprised people actually had heard of this film. it's not widely reviewed, though i guess it comes with the film comment stamp of approval and that is enough for most people. and tadanobu asano, as well.

i saw the sunday showing and really enjoyed the film overall - true, it's slow, but i enjoyed the basic premise of the film and the bizarre noise rock. i came in expecting something lacking narrative and cohesive structure, and basically expected something more like a museum piece. fortunately, the sound was pretty decent in the theater, so that helped the whole experiece.

my friend and i didn't enjoy the ending where asano plays for hana in the empty field - it seemed a bit tacky.

btw, i really enjoyed the eggleston film that played earlier in the week.

I was a volunteer at the Transsylvania International Movie Festival, and i watched 35 movies that week, but this one really stuck with me. I loved it, I'm just soo sory they had to screen it at midnight... after a day (literally) of manually putting subtitles on for other films and running from one theatre to the next, I was really tired and I would have wanted to see this movie with full-focus and cognitive ability.
I'm one of those guys that listens to stuff nobody ever heard of, so I must say I loved the music (yes, music) the band in the movie played. And, visually, the film was stunning. Certain frames were almost surreal paintings.
Anyway, I weep for the total elusiveness of this film on DVD...

It's out in Japan now--with English subtitles! It's the usual ridiculous Japanese DVD price (like 40 bucks) but freely available from the usual set of online Asian DVD importers.

And a very nice DVD it is too. With very good Dolby digital 5.1 surround noise.

And if that thought frightens you, you'd best avoid this movie!

I enjoyed this, but then I like most of Aoyama Shinji's stuff. I was very worried reading people's comments about falling asleep that he'd made another 3 hour black and white opus. Luckily that's not the case and if you like Aoyama Shinji's movies you should enjoy this (so long as you can cope with the 'noise').
