Why Are We Only Allowed To See White People on Sitcoms?

Forget the fact that this is a really poorly written, unfunny show.

My question is- why do all four of the "Kings" have to be white?

They couldn't have at least ONE non-white friend in there?

What a perfect opportunity to have a multi-racial cast (or as multi-racial as TV can get anyway) and they squandered it yet again by casting 4 lame white guys. What a slap in the face to every talented NON white comedic actor out there.

Or maybe every non-white actor who auditioned just wasn't right for the part.

Yes, that must be it.

Yeesh.

True, New York City (I'm assuming, I don't remember where it is taking place) has to be one of the most minority filled cities in America. And especially in this day and age where television has mostly minority casts. Look at the cast of Lost or Grey's Anatomy. Not only is a mostly white filled comedy inaccurate- it's tacky.

Yes, I'm here.

reply

Apparently neither of you have seen Bernie Mac, whatever that show with George Lopez was called(which was terrible), or the many, many, other shows with "coloured" characters. Scrubs has a black guy and spanish girl, Will & Grace sucks anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem, My Name Is Earl has a black guy, CSI has a black guy, and also a spanish guy(Miami). The sad thing is that for the past 15 or so years, movies had too many black people. Don't take this comment the wrong way, it's just that ethnic people in movies are way too commonly used as stereotypes. If there were any non-white people in Four Kings, it would likely just be the token black guy, nerdy but cute Indian guy, annoying Asian guy, or the saucy Spanish guy. Who needs more stereotype in sitcoms, they're already swimming with them.

reply

"Who needs more stereotype in sitcoms, they're already swimming with them."

If there were no stereotypes on TV- there would be no TV.

You think the WHITE guys on "Four Kings" aren't steretypes?

I mean come on now.

In any case your arguement is flawed, my friend. You're saying keep all non-whites off TV because they're just used as stereotypes, etc.

How about putting them ON tv, but as regular people?

Your solution seems a bit extreme, kind of like calling for the death of fat people so that no one can ever make fun of them.

Your heart's in the right place but your mind is somewhere else.

We need to send a message to the networks that we WANT to see non-whites on TV in "regular" roles, not just as stereotypes.

And as for the guy who said this:

"i get that the 4kings are all white friends because thats believable."

Are you saying it's UNbelievable that four people of different colors could ever be friends? Because to me, it's highly believable. In fact the only place where that situation seems to be truly unbelievable is on television.

In the real world, people of all colors are friends, but on TV- races tend to only stick to their own.

Sad when you think about it.

reply

May I ask WHY, in God's name, it matters so much? They're not white because the writers are racist, and they're not white because it's more "believable." They're white simply because that's the way this show was written. Because the four different characters that they wrote just happened to work better with the four actors that they picked, and the four actors that they picked just happened to be white. If you're truly bound & determined to be angry at something, then be angry at me for undermining your post; but don't hate a good show because of racism that's not even there. Good day.

Here's the part where I have some extremely overused movie quote.

The show, which is based in NYC, is too white and too christian (in a city where there is a large hsdiac jewish community and an exponentially increasing muslim community it is curiously odd you can't get even a backdrop of the city dynamics that makes it the go to city for shows). However, I can't complain too much because this show is bad. All of the characters are such hack charicatures that it's not worth debating the inexplicable lack of a minority presence. And while i am a big fan of Will and Grace, I am confused why shows continue to use New York City as a backdrop (which I suspect is because it is an international city and is a euphomism for cosmopolitan) when there is no intention to honor the diversity that makes the city -- the City. NBC (and the other networks, even UPN wich manages to have the reverse effect all minority cities with no white folk)need to realize that other cities in the US exsist and would be a better choice.

Four Kings would be a bit more papable if it took place in denver, memphis, dallas, tacoma (WA), boston, oklahoma city, pittsburgh, buffalo, etc...hell any other mid market city would be better than the show based in NYC.

ER feels the most real to me as far as castings concerned. Why can't comedies take a page from shows like these as far as casting. Or, if you're a white writer, write for a white, then cast ethnic and get the ethnic actor to help you write the bugs out (without threatening the writer's teleplay credit of course).

The more diverse your cast, the more demographics you can draw upon to lure people in to watching your show. Then advertisers have four demographics to draw upon to buy their crap instead of just the white one. It's that simple.

Casting to a certain extent should follow the ethnicity percentages in America. If 20% of the population is considered "black", then you could cast each network with 20% blacks (or whatever ethnicity). Unless the show is specifically about an ethnicity (which four kings ain't). This may seem too contrived. But think about it. Isn't the message really the point of any show? If the message of a show is racism, then what difference does it make if you cast black, asian or native? This point may seem like it doesn't matter if even you cast whites to talk about racism, but it does.

If you cast white to talk about racism, no one will care because white people are probably the least discriminated against in north america.

its not just white people to blame. go watch UPN no white people only black people. but if there was one one black of the kings then it would look to stupid. look at your friends, whats the black:white ratio? realistically..

im black and ive got maybe 3 black friends. the rest are white.

thats just how shows work. you have to work with your audience. and nbc's audience is mostly white.

its been this way for years. its nothing new and its probably never going to change

I understand the topic creator's complaint, but at the same time, it is also not that far off from reality. I do find that most of the people I hang out with regularly are white, middle class people in their mids-late 20's. This is not a conscious choice, and something I never even thought of until posting this, but it is the truth.

I think people of other ethnicities know better then to accept acting roles in shows this crappy. Seth Green, what are you thinking man?

If all your friends look just like you- it might be time to go find some new friends. Leave the neighborhood once in a while, etc.

In any case glad you like "Four Kings," because there's plenty more where that came from.

TV is made for people like you, so enjoy it while you can.

Okay, if that's not a racist comment, then I don't know what is. For someone who goes around getting offended at "racism" on TV, you really have a lot to learn about hipocricy. So, how about this? You get off the computer, make some friends, get a hobby, and don't come back here whining about racism unless you're prepared to exercise some self control over your own comments.

Thanks for the allcaps, that helps a lot.

In other news that actually has a point:

I enjoy how people say that it's a moot arguement because in real life people of the same color only hang out with each other, etc.

Here's what that translates into:

"Be a racist like me and stop complaining."

This is how the idea of races actually spending time together gets out there folks: through mass media. When people see stuff on TV, it actually happens in real life. It's sad that we need TV to help us, but it seems we do.

So if you want to keep the races separate in every way, just keep watching shows like "Four Kings," that enforce the idea that whites only hang out with whites, etc. Frankly if all your friends are the same color as you- then "Four Kings" is the perfect show for you.

Bigoted TV, made by bigots, for bigots.

You know, the kind of people who think the only black people on TV go "damn!" and all that.

Heh, that had to be dumbest post I've ever seen.

The people who put black guys like that on TV may not have been racist, but the people who think those are the only kinds of black guys on TV almost certainly are.

How nice to know there are people like that at IMDB.

In all honesty, would it make that much of a difference, regardless? Whether black, gay, Indian, Jew, TV is already the boiling pot of groups. Only on a few shows nowadays is a one race class a problem. We've had two episodes, and I'll bet that another race of character, or religion or sexual preference, will enter the situation somehow. NBC is a basic television company, so they have pressure constantly to institute many races onto shows, whether they are needed or not, thats up to you people to discuss. But, for people on this board who are looking for a relatable character, they had the crazy theif in episode two. And for those of you who have made this whole race thing a moot point, responded frequently when it wasn't needed, then yes, there is something relatable to a very select few of you. A crazy guy with no time on his hands. (And I'll leave it up to you to decide whose crazy, should make for some more conv.)

Oh, and if anyone comes at me with a typical "Spoken like a true white boy" or inarguably less typical "He shops at the One-Race mart" or something, I've got friends of many different races, religions, sexual preferences, etc. etc. Doesn't make them less of a person/ less funny/ less whatever

reply

Everyone has different experiences. Just because you (figuratively, not literally) and dozens of folks you know only hang out with folks that are (mostly) of the same race, or just because you and dozens of folks you know are living examples of what the great Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King described in his "I Have a Dream" speech, it doesn't mean that the rest of the world, or even most of it, lives the way you do.

Additionally, in my opinion, most, if not all, of the people who make mass marketed entertainment don't care about you or the way you live, except insofar as it helps them in their neverending chase for almighty cash. Sure, if enough of us got together and insisted on someone of African heritage appearing on the show, or someone of Native American, Asian, Indian, Latino or whatever heritage, they might listen to us, if we made enough noise. And, of course, the show will go bye-bye if it doesn't do well in the ratings. But for now, they will continue on with these four American, relatively young, Caucasian, apparently heterosexual, middle class-ish, Judeo-Christian males (I know at least one of the characters is Jewish or has a Jewish background, not sure about the other three, but I'll hazard a guess here that they're all either of some type of Jewish or Christian religious background, lapsed or not). From what I've learned about mass marketed entertainment (which I admit isn't a ton), I believe that the reason they will do this is because they think it will play to the public--and sadly, they probably have marketing research that indicates that they're correct.

From ddblundell:

Bigoted TV, made by bigots, for bigots.

Those involved in making and airing this show may or may not be bigots, but I don't think that's the issue--money is. I also doubt that they're aiming for or even reaching a bigoted audience, depending on your definition of bigotry. Most people viewing the show probably don't even consider race when choosing to watch it.

From ddblundell:

I enjoy how people say that it's a moot arguement because in real life people of the same color only hang out with each other, etc. Here's what that translates into: "Be a racist like me and stop complaining."

Again, the people making such comments may or may not be racists, but I don't think that's the issue, and I'll hazard a guess that they would not be considered racist by most of society if all of their thoughts and actions were examined in their entirety. They're simply speaking from their own experience, as you and I and everyone else speak from ours. Granted, I believe, as you seem to, that it would be nice if more of those producing entertainment would make diversity a priority. Unfortunately, cash appears to be the priority most of the time. Apparently, many entertainment producers either don't feel that diversity is necessary to win the advertising dollar, or, even more sadly, it has not thusfar been necessary in several cases, including this one. Perhaps this is an opportunity to not only change the channel or switch off the TV when shows like this are on, but also to watch where we shop and support business that advertise on shows that feature racially diverse characters in meaningful roles.

From ddblundell:

So if you want to keep the races separate in every way, just keep watching shows like "Four Kings," that enforce the idea that whites only hang out with whites, etc.

I truly, truly hope that no TV show, especially not a mediocre sitcom like Four Kings, has the power to divide people along racial lines. However, I do agree that it doesn't offer the best example in terms of making diversity both "normal" and "the norm" i.e., below:

From ddblundell:

We need to send a message to the networks that we WANT to see non-whites on TV in "regular" roles, not just as stereotypes.

I'm completely on board with this. I believe that most Four Kings viewers know that diversity is "normal," in that it exists. What would be nice for us to see on TV is the somewhat more intimate concept of "the norm," in that diversity is more incidental. Like, one of the kings just happens to be of African heritage...and that's it. Like Turk on Scrubs, a show that I think handles racial issues very well, if you're not a viewer with what I would consider to be sacred cows (just my opinion).

From KingKoala:

Yeah, they should have a token black guy, who just stands around and says things like "Damn!", and "Shiit!", and "That is whack!".

From ddblundell:

You know, the kind of people who think the only black people on TV go "damn!" and all that. Heh, that had to be dumbest post I've ever seen.
The people who put black guys like that on TV may not have been racist, but the people who think those are the only kinds of black guys on TV almost certainly are.

ddblundell, in the above passage, were you referring to KingKoala's post? If so, I know that it seemed offensive, but I don't think KingKoala meant to be offensive (although I certainly can't say for sure). I think KingKoala was referring to a very funny movie (in my opinion) called Not Another Teen Movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0277371/ . In fact, the movie seemed to be pointing out that too many minorities are portrayed in stereotypical roles, as in people of African heritage being tokens that say, "Damn!" etc. The movie just seemed to be highlighting this sad fact in a comical way.

From ddblundell:

How nice to know there are people like that at IMDB. Really helps me sleep at night.

I hate to say it, but if you haven't already found this to be true, there is wwwwaaaayyyyy worse behavior lurking on IMDb. (And elsewhere, too, of course.) Some people are shockingly rude!

*beep* why is it that it's fine to have entirely black casts or shows where the only white characters are protrayed as morons who wish they were black. The reality is that the show has four white guys because that's the show. I'm tired of this idea that all white people are evil and all black people are saints. Did no-one consider the fact that this is probably written by a white guy so he feels he can inhabit the mind of a white person more easily than african american or hispanic characters. Stop with all this is it cause I'm black *beep* now

Hey, first I just want to thank RunAwayRunAway for writing such a thorough, accurate, and polite comment. I hope we see more of this on imdb.

Second, I see the points people have made. True, the cast could use diversity - yet, at the same time, should they cast someone simply because of their race? In an ideal world, the cast would incidentally have minorites. However, if the actors who are best for the part all happen to be white, why should this be a problem? I'm not saying whether or not this is true for Four Kings - I'm simply conjecturing. I mean, how would you feel if the producer said, "Ya know, you're a great kid, really funny, but we already have three white guys on this show, and we need a minority." Likewise, how you feel if you realized that you were only cast so that the show would be "diverse"? I think that this would be just as racist as turning someone down because they were a minority.

And that's what it really comes down to. Were the actors for this series handpicked, or did they audition? Did any better actors audition, and was anyone rejected or ignored on the basis of race? That's my definition of racism. What race, and for what "reason" doesn't matter.

Of course, questions of race will never have an easy answer. As I said before, in an ideal world, we wouldn't give a thought about anyone's origins. Aren't we all just people? Also, someone's appearance can't always display their heritage to our stereotypical world. I have red hair, blue eyes, and freckly skin, but I'm one sixteenth Native American. Will that make or break my career? It shouldn't. I hope it won't.

I may be a geek, but at least I'm lovable sometimes.

reply

It is amazing to me how a show can not come out these days without someone pulling the race card. Why oh why is it racist to not have a black cast member. I go into certain stores in the mall near me and there is not a white person working there, do i scream racism? No i dont really care! BET..how many white folks ya see on that channel..maybe one or two every five hours. I just dont understand why everything has to be black vs white. I have black friends i have white friends and honestly not a single one of my friends black white or yellow has ever said "Hey, why doesnt such and such show have any black folks on it" I think the media in its politically correct kinder gentler equality mode pushes that thought process that its racist not to have black people on these shows. If you are truly offended by lack of ethnicity on a show A.- DONT WATCH! and B.- quit watching tv and well going out in the world because there are much more offensive things out there and much more worthy causes to crusade against and frankly if something like this is so bothersome to you i dont know how you would be able to survive real conflict. TV is meant to entertain, if you cannot be entertained by the casting of a certain show, dont watch, change the channel watch bernie mac or everybody hates chris or pretty much anything on UPN and call it a day

reply

It's hard to write a comedy that has black characters and not have it seem trite and stereotypical. I'm insulted when I see black people portrayed the way they are in hollywood. If shows were created without race in mind it would feel more natural, instead when people think of a black character, they end up either consciously or subconsciously adding stereotypes. To me, shows that manage to pull it off are hard to come by. Everybody Hates Chris is a good one and Scrubs manages to have only 1 black character without making him seem like a token. I don't think it's something that is easy to do. But hey, if we minorities were the majority, there wouldn't be too many white people on tv.

And by the way, minoritiy characters wouldn't save this show, it simply isn't funny enough unfortunately.

reply

Wow you really think you have a strong case about this rascism thing, which is cool and all if you did but you don't. Who the hell really cares if it is all white. The only people who think about it is either people with too much time on their hands or pathetic people who have to scream rasict to everyone they can. That is what makes the world how it is. So what if it does have black, mexican, asian, or whatever else ethnic group you want to through in their. They are white and they are funny so just leave it alone.
