Gee another Canadian movie...

focused on sexually confused and confusing characters...WoW never seen that before(sarcasm), a suicide and bad lighting would really round it out and give it that Made in Canada feel

Actually I would prefer something that tries not to be so original that it becomes unoriginal.

I watched this movie last night and found it to be a pretty damn good drama. I'm not into Canadian films that much either, even though I'm Canadian. I just don't find that most Canadian films are of great quality. This one was pretty entertaining though.

This doesn't actually make any sense. Assuming you meant "I would prefer something that doesn't try so hard to be original that it becomes unoriginal," it wouldn't.

It might become chaotic or confused or overburdened with originality (a film that had no elements ever seen anywhere before would be incomprehensible), but too much novelty doesn't turn into its opposite.

Presuming you don't want films to be completely unoriginal, how original is original enough but not too much?

So, why do you automatically assume that every movie needs to push boundaries and be controversial. A movie doesn't need to be "controversial" or "original" to tell a good story and if you think that, you probably don't enjoy very many movies.
