What a LAME show

Though it doesn't come off as a surprise that many kiwis love this crappy series. I have just one question: why do so many people like it? Here's the answer: because the people who like it are probably the ones who can relate to the dumb characters in the show, a reflection of what that audience (that likes it) is in real life - a bunch of foul-mouthed, slutty, brainless, dickless losers.

Shortland Street is bad, but man, Outrageous Fortune is mind-numbing.

You're an idiot.

reply

Thanks, though I'm not as idiotic as anyone who claims this to be a "good" show.

No, actually you're the idiot.

That's a very fine Chardonnay your not drinking.

reply

Why do you watch it if it's so bad? More to the point. Why do you write about it on a message board if it's so bad? Do you have nothing better to do with your time?

As I recall this is a forum where people discuss why they like/dislike films/shows/actors/actresses etc. If you don't like what I wrote, then move on.

reply

I didn't say I don't like what you wrote, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm just asking a legitimate question. Why do people watch shows they hate and post messages about them online? Is it some sort of weird closure thing?

reply

Not at all. I just saw a few episodes and that's it.

I called you an idiot because you're berating a show whose point you completely, 100% missed.

reply

And I call you a BIGGER idiot for praising a show that completely fits the description I gave in my original post. So what is this "point" that I missed, pray tell?

Just one word; satire.

The whole thing is a SATIRE.

It's Kiwis taking the piss out of themselves, because that is what we, as a nation, are famous for. Casual living. A lack of seriousness in our daily lifestyle; not taking ourselves too seriously and being proud of it. Outrageous Fortune is an over-the-top, satirical DRAMATISATION of this laid-back lifestyle, in which we kiwis look at the extremes of who we are, and laugh about it, because it's funny.

Are you a kiwi? Because if you're not, I'm not surprised that you can't understand this.

Well, gee, thanks for agreeing to the synonymous description I gave in my original post. It seems we do finally agree on something.

Perhaps not by citizenship, but I've lived here quite a while to understand the mentality, so I know quite well what I'm talking about.

every person to themselves, if everyone liked a show then there would be know competition to keep making more shows.

I personally highly enjoyed this show, not living out west but rather central, this show reinforces on the hilarious stereotypes of westie culture and pulls them off beautifully, of course this is just my opinion and as i said you cant expect everyone to love it, so really arguing about why someone should like it is futile, wheres the individuality in that!

I am just curious, what didn't do it for you? was it the characters or the storylines? or a mixture of both, i notice you said you've only watched a few episodes? not all episodes can be action packed and certainly some are a lot better then others, have you ever thought of giving a few more a try?

and for the record, yes Shortland Street is absolute crap, always has been, always will be

You want a reply with substance rather than just 'you're an idiot'? Well, here you go.

I personally love this show. If you've only seen a 'couple of episodes', then I can understand why you didn't like it. Personally, I still enjoyed the first few episodes, but let's be honest, they're mostly comedic, without too much substance.

But as the series progresses, and certainly further on in later series, the show really becomes something a lot more thought provoking and complex. Sure, there's still the cheap laughs at Van being an idiot, for example, but the skill of the entire cast certainly does grow and mature, as do the themes and story lines that occur.

If you honestly want to understand the hype, then watch the entire show, however if you don't find ANYTHING you enjoy in it so far, chances are, it's not for you.

Now, as for 'lolallyoucansayisI'manidiot' mentality, let's remind you that you opened this post with criticising other people

('a reflection of what that audience (that likes it) is in real life - a bunch of foul-mouthed, slutty, brainless, dickless losers.' )

just because they enjoy something different to you, in fact makes you, a 'brainless loser', so I think calling you an idiot is completely justified.

Move on, troll.

I may have been one of those trolls five months ago. I watched a couple eps. from the first season and gave it up. After watching the US version of Shameless changed my mind. I had a Netflix duel between the UK Shameless, and Outrageous Fortune. The Kiwi's won, and I'm addicted! I'm deep into series five, and I want Sheree dead, now that's she's delivered her devil spawn twins. I worry that UK/Aus/NZ TV never allows the real villian to pay. This goes beyond tying a nice ribbon on a plot, Sheree is a complete SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY (fanny in UK). Van is not Fredo, he has a bigger heart, and does the right thing in his mind.

If "Outrageous Fortune" were some embarassing reality view of "white trash" NZ, Americans, Aussies, and Brits wouldn't want to see it. The moron who started this argument obviously has no idea of a famous HBO American TV drama named "The Sopranos". As if all Americans are from Italian decent, live in northern New Jersey, and are involved with organized crime.

"Outrageous Fortune" is a well written (in the Brit form of TV) show that suspends reality! The character of Van West reminds me of Fredo Corleone, or Ziggy from "The Wire" (another show above idiot should watch). The only part of the show I have to question is that sometimes the writers make out Van to be so stupid, how can he be allowed to operate a motor vehicle?

That Sheree plotline was just over the top. Since Jethro was acting as Van that night and impregnated Sheree, with Van convinced he was the father.....wow! Yet even a jailhouse visit with Wolf didn't kick a trigger in his head!?!?

"OF" is still a great show, it's not "The Wire".

reply

Completely agree.

You do realise that you called people who like this show foul mouthed in the same sentence that you used the word dickless... Hypocrite.
