Grant Bowler's NZ accent?

What do you all think of Grant Bowler's attempted NZ accent? Not too bad if you ask me, better than average...any thoughts from the kiwis out there?

reply

holy crap its fantastic, I like it. I actually thought that he had been living in NZ 4 a while therfore he developed and NZ accent, thats how good it is!

lol

reply

Yeah i like it too!!

Oh, they have the Internet on computers now - Homer Simpson

reply

Sorry to disappoint guys but Grant Bowler was born in NZ. That may account for it.

reply

imdb reckons he was born in Australia.

18 July 1968, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

reply

he sounds completely australian to me
and i'm australian

You should know by now that anyone with a bit of fame or celebrity only has to pass through Sydney airport to become and australian Russell Crowe is a good example.

reply

reply

he was born in NZ. he even says it on the outrageous fortune website. not that i care though

reply

Hmm well i don't know now...on the outrageous fortune site it says, and i quote, "Grant Bowler is no stranger to the small screen in his adopted homeland of Australia " but it says 'adopted homeland' meaning...he wasn't actually born there...so i dunno

reply

The first few eps i wasn't sure if grant bowler was using a kiwi accent, but i hear it more now, on certain words. it's no where near as strong or noticeable as the rest of the cast though.

reply

bowlers one of those russell crowe types. grew up in nz, moved to oz. dunno if he was born here tho. but yea, it hard to tell between a subtle oz accent and a nz once anyway, specially a westie accent.

hey, yoda needs to give some better advice, or yoda needs to shut the *beep* up

Sorry I know it is late to reopen a thread.

Grant Bowler was on TV here recently and mentioned how it was funny because he was born in NZ and the only passport he has is a New Zealand passport (and never became an Australian citizen) but speaks with an Australian accent so often wonders if he 'belongs' anywhere.

Apparently Perth is where he grew up and hence the confusion as to where he was actually born

He does the voiceover for the 'Border Security' show here in Australia.

Where Else but Queensland?

We also were getting the NZ 'Border Patrol' But I haven't seen if for a number of months. Is it still on the air?

The bludger should not be a National Icon.

He sounds straight up Aussie to me. I've lived in Melbourne for 2 years after growing up in Wellington

reply

There's no way he sounds like a Kiwi. His accent is fully Aussie

reply

[deleted]

He claims both OZ and NZ.

reply

Definately Australian. It's especially noticeable if words like "look" (the oo is more pronounced) and "I've" (Or've).

I'm Australian and he sounds pretty Aussie to me. Although he does try to say 'sh!t' like 'shet'.

He has been living in Australia since he was 4 or 5, but. So I guess that would explain why he sounds Australian.

A TV guide interview with Grant Bowler is that he refers himself as a kiwiroo or a oziwi he acknowledges both countries - And guess what? It's truely who he is

sorry to reopen post, from wiki

Grant Bowler (born 18 July 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand). Bowler moved to Australia at a young age. His family moved first to Sydney, then to Perth and eventually settled in Brisbane when Bowler was five. He graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1991. He married Australian actress, Roxane Wilson, in 2001.

He has an aussie accent but was born in NZ

reply

Roxane Wilson - who turned up in an episode.
Which was nice.

reply

As has been said before, he's born in NZ, but lived in Australia most of his life.

His first role, I believe, was on Blue Heelers, a local Aussie show from way back.
So of course he naturally has an Australian accent, but personally, I think he killed it as Wolfgang West. I love him in pretty much everything he is in.
I think my first memory is when he hosted The Mole here in Aus.

reply

I'm from Europe and I can't keep the Oz or NZ accents apart. They sound the same to me.

reply

New Zealand used to be part of Australia though so not surprising if there is some hybridizing.

reply

Actually it's the same for me as a Canadian - both accents sound the same to me, but I'm sure to natives of Australia and New Zealand there are distinct differences. (It's the same thing with a British accent - I can certainly tell if someone is from England, but I could never discern any regional differences.) In any case, love "Outrageous Fortune" - great show!
