Any recommended reading?

I just saw this movie the other day, and quite enjoyed it. Being a History major and all, I thought I would check on the pertinent board to see if there are any good books on the Irish War for Independence and/or the Civil War. Anyone have a recommendation?

well 'michael collins' by Tim Pat Coogan is excellent - it's well known and available on amazon. 'The Irish Civil War' by Peter Cottrell is good too.

Y'know, kid... you got a helluva knack for killin' a conversation

Coogan has a number of good works. Tom Barry's "Guerilla Days in Ireland" is a classic that was studied by the military for many years. If you read that one of the scenes in the film will take on a whole new meaning.

Yes! I just finished 'Ireland's Unfinished Revolution: An Oral History' (also called 'Curious Journey') by Kenneth Griffith & Timothy O'Grady and it was excellent! Five stars! You get the history plus first-hand accounts by a few people who were there: Tom Barry, David Neligan, Joseph Sweeney, etc. Best book I've read on the period.

Thank you. This is one of my top ten movies from the last decade. I can't wait to read more about this period in Irish history.

The Republic: The Fight for Irish Independence, 1918-1923 by Charles Townshend is a great read. It contains insightful details about the political situation, from a military and civilian perspective.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
