Picture Quality

Why did Lynch choose to shoot Inland Empire in such a low picture quality? The DV tape camcorder style took me out of the film and made it look more like a high school project than a professional film.

The picture quality is poor in 'parts' of the movie, in other parts it is resplendent. I believe the murky, organic look of many scenes in this movie is very deliberate. It helps reinforce the meaning of the movie. It helps describe the true 'setting' within which the actions take place.

It's deliberate. So is the total black iris and retina that we see in tight closeup.
