We seem to have 4 LEVELS to the AXXON N STORY:

3 LEVELS take place INSIDE of it ...

1 LEVEL takes PLACE OUTSIDE OF IT ...

or OUTSIDE of the MAGIC REALM that is created by the NEW NEIGHBOR ... the REALM that ends when DERN turns her head to look over at the other TWIN COPY of herself sitting on the couch across the room in the PALE BLUE 50 or 60's style dress.





LEVEL ONE:

Mr. and MRS. LUCAS (Lost Girl) ... is seduced by the BIG BAD WOLF character ...

(inside of the MODERN DAY HOTEL ROOM ... with the MODERN DAY MONITOR ... and the Modern day SATELLITE DISH that sits outside the window where she sits ...

which also means their story takes place OUTSIDE of the INSIDE STORY shown to us by the NEW NEIGHBOR).


LEVEL TWO:

MR. and MRS. PIOTREK (aka: NIKI) ... is seduced by her Co Star DEVON???


LEVEL THREE:


SUE BLUE (Dern as Mrs. Smithy) is seduced by BILLY ???


LEVEL FOUR:


LOST GIRL is seduced by MUSHTASH MAN or by the husband of the WOMAN in WHITE ???

So ...

if we assume the MRS. PIOTREK character or the NIKI/SUE character is also a DUAL character ROLE an actress plays in KINGSLEY'S BLUE VERSION of the STORY ...

which is also a story about an ACTRESS from the current TIME getting TRAPPED inside of SMITHY'S WORLD or inside of his 1960 TIME frame ...

because of a CURSE that is also a part of accepting and playing a DUAL ROLE in the MOVIE SCRIPT ...

then doesn't that also mean the WINDOW SCENE where NIKI stands inside of SMITHY'S LIVING ROOM ...

looking out the FRONT WINDOW ...

as she watches the inside of STAGE 4 disappear ...

and turn into a FRONT YARD ...

would also be a part of the MOVIE SCRIPT?

And doesn't that also mean the ACTRESS we see standing there is waiting for the FILM CREW to LOAD UP and PROJECT the FRONT YARD SCENE onto the BLUE or GREEN SCREEN before she OPENS up the LOCKED FRONT DOOR that is now UNLOCKED ...

so that she can go out into the Front yard and look around ...

pretending to be confused ...

because that's also what the MOVIE SCRIPT calls for her to do NEXT ...

in this part of the MOVIE SCRIPT that calls for her to get TRAPPED inside SMITHY'S HOUSE???

Because this MAGIC WINDOW scene also happens right after we see the 2ND REHEARSAL for SCENE 35 ...

where DERN ENCOUNTERS the TWIN COPY of herself that disappears from the REHEARSAL TABLE ...

after she enters the AXXON N DOOR in the BACK Alley.

And during the REHEARSAL for SCENE 35 we also hear KINGSLEY saying:

WE'LL BLOCK it out as BEST as POSSIBLE ...


Which is also a term for WALKING to the PARTS of the STAGE where one says one's lines ...

which also means DEVON WALKS to the BACK OF THE STAGE ...

because that's also where he needs to be to say his lines in the SCRIPT ...

which also means his STANDNG OUTSIDE of SMITHY'S HOUSE as DERN looks out at him through the FRONT WINDOW is also a part of the MOVIE SCRIPT????

the WOLF Marilyn Levens WARNS DERN ABOUT ...

and then MRS. LUCAS/Lost Girl also SITS there WATCHING the MOVIE MONITOR ...

and figures out WHERE she's at ...

by having WATCHED IT ...

SO once she also KNOWS where she is ...

and she's no longer feeling LOST anymore ...

she RUNS DOWN THE STAIRS ...

and into the FAKE TWIN COPY of SMITHY'S HOUSE ...

by using the BACK WAY to GET INSIDE of it ...

and thus BEGINS still another VERSION of the AXXON N STORY again ...

with LOST GIRL or MRS. LUCAS having just had SEX with the BIG BAD WOLF ...

which also means she's most likely PREGNANT by another man ...

one that isn't the OFFSPRING of her husband ...



or THE ACTOR who plays the DUAL ROLES of PIOTREK and SMITHY ...

THE same way as DERN plays the DUAL ROLES of NIKI/SUE

and JUSTIN plays the DUAL ROLE of DEVON/BILLY

in KINGSLEY'S BLUE VERSION of THE AXXON N STORY.

Ok, I'm with you on Level 2, 3 and 4. But Level #1 is not clear. Who on level #1, in terms of images/people we see on the screen in IE, are you referring to when you say "Mrs. Lucas"….is she the character we see sitting on the bed watching TV who then reunites with Lucas and the kid at the end?

Also in level #1 who is the seducer "the big bad wolf"?

Because we also see LUCAS SEARCHING for her in that MODERN DAY AUDI AUTOMOBILE ...

when he goes to see THE 3 HALF RABBIT/HALF HUMANS who give him the GUN.

So apparently we've also got this OTHER COUPLE on ANOTHER LEVEL who inhabit the same MODERN DAY TIME FRAME as NIKI does ...

because we also have the DUAL LOST GIRL/MRS. LUCAS character sitting there watching the MODERN DAY MONITOR with the SATELLITE DISH sitting there outside the window.

So what's probably going on is LOST GIRL is the ACTRESS who plays the DUAL ROLE of MRS. LUCAS/MRS. SMITHY???

Like DERN's the actress who plays the DUAL ROLES of NIKI/SUE ...

And JUSTIN plays the DUAL ROLES of DEVON/BILLY ...

AND LUCAS plays the DUAL ROLES OF PIOTREK/SMITHY ...

AND since we also see DORIS sitting in the ROOM with the DETECTIVE ...

with the SCREWDRIVER STUCK in her GUT ...

maybe MRS. LUCAS/LOST GIRL is also the character who STABS her ...

because she was having an affair with LUCAS???

But at the same time as DORIS screws LUCAS in the MODERN DAY SETTING ...

maybe MRS. LUCAS also screws DEVON in the FAKE HOTEL ROOM on the MOVIE SET ...

where he takes her so he won't get seen or caught by the SPIES of MARILYN LEVENS???

So maybe the HAPPY ENDING where LOST GIRL is UNITED again with SMITHY as MRS. SMITHY is also an ENDING where MRS. LUCAS is also pregant by DEVON ...

the BIG BAD WOLF in the TALE who MARILYN LEVENS WARNS DERN about ...

when she says she has a WOLF in her DEN???

And that would also help to explain the other line where DERN says:

DAMN! That sounds like the DIALOUGE from our SCRIPT

BECAUSE the SCRIPT also has a way of TAKING OVER the lives of the ACTORS who play the CHARACTERS in the SCRIPT ...

so that their lives MIRROR, REFLECT, and actually become the SCRIPT???

Because that's also the kind of a CURSE that comes from playing a ROLE in the SCRIPT???

The LIVES of the ACTORS who play the CURSED PART in the SCRIPT also become a part of the SCRIPT itself???

Ok, but I don't get the Doris screwing Lucas bit at all. As you have it above, Doris is on Level #3 and Lucas on Level #1. Doris is on the same level as SMITHY, and there's nothing I've seen suggesting any hanky panky between those two.

The proposition that she must have SCREWED someone comes from her also having that SCREW DRIVER STUCK in her GUT.

Since the other 2 GIRLS with SCREW DRIVERS (LOST GIRL/DERN) ...

were involved in situations that involved AFFAIRS and some kind of CHEATING ...

this is what leads one to suspect this other MYSTERY woman who talks to the DETECTIVE may have also been STABBED by a woman who is JEALOUS ...

The front yard by the Smithy´s house is obviously real, not a "green screen". If Dern hasn´t ventured off the map, off the script, there, then when do you think it does happen?

Yes the YARD or the GRASS that she steps out into would be REAL ...

which is why they would also need to shoot that SCENE ON LOCATION ...

such as when we also hear KINGSLEY saying after the end of shooting the GARDEN SCENE (where DERN has her LEGS in the SPREAD EAGLE POSTITION) ...

that they'll be leaving the FINE WEATHER of LA ...

meaning they will next go to POLAND to film ON LOCATION.

But the part where we see the inside of STAGE 4 MORPHING into that of a FRONT YARD through the WINDOW would also use a BLUE SCREEN or GREEN SCREEN for that scene.

See what I mean???

Same situation with the OUTSIDE of SMITHY'S HOUSE which would also have been SHOT ON LOCATION during the HOT DOG PARTY.

But the INSIDE SCENES would also have been FILMED INSIDE of STAGE 4.

And we also have the OTHER WALK of FAME SCENES ...

both INSIDE STAGE 4 where the FAKE TWIN COPY is created ...

AND OUTSIDE of it ON LOCATION.

which we also see happening on the MAGIC TV/MONITOR that GEORGE has in his HOUSE ...

and GEORGE tells her to come over to his house.

He also tells the FORTUNE TELLER who reads TEA LEAVES that he READS CIGAR ASHES instead of reading TEA LEAVES.

So ...

once the FORTUNE TELLER ARRIVES ...

then the other neighbors who think GEORGE is RICH because he's invested in the STOCK MARKET ...

also realize he's NOT RICH ...

and that his wife GRACIE has only been to see the FORTUNE TELLER ...

who told her GEORGE WOULD BE RICH ...

which was why GRACIE buys her son a BRAND NEW CAR.

So this also seems to be the same kinda thing we have HAPPENING in IE ...

where we also seem to have a SITUATION that involves THE USE OF MAGIC MONITORS inside of THE RABBIT ROOM, ROOM 205, and the MOVIE THEATER ...

MAGIC MONITORS that are also USED to SPY on other characters ...



like GEORGE SPYS on GRACIE ...

in the GEORGE and GRACIE TV SHOW???

WONDER if the RABBITS might also be WATCHING the GEORGE and GRACIE SHOW???

since that's also what DERN seems to see on it???



So maybe LOST GIRL WATCHES DERN ...

the RABBITS WATCH LOST GIRL ...

and then DERN also WATCHES her once she reaches the RABBIT ROOM???

The curious thing is how NO ONE ever seems to WATCH TV inside of SMITHY'S HOUSE.

Instead of WATCHING TV in SMITHY'S Place ...

what we see them doing is PLAYING RECORDS ...

like the AXXON N RECORD.

Interesting - Dern materializes at stage 4 to witness herself and others in the earlier (IE) scene right after this white flash of light in total darkness. Certainly calls to mind photography and darkrooms etc.

If you LISTEN CLOSELY you'll also see the REHEARSAL SCENE she sees ...

after she ENTERS the AXXON N DOOR in the BACK ALLEY ...

is also NOT the SAME SCENE she REHEARSED BEFORE ...

because the LINES we hear FREDDY SAYING this TIME ARE also SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT LINES than the one's we heard him saying the FIRST TIME.

One time he says something like THERE'S SOMEONE BACK THERE.

The other time he says something like NO ... SOMEONE IS BACK THERE.

And we also see this same thing happening again when DERN talks to MR. K ...

because in one scene she tells him she's MARRIED ...

and in another SCENE she tells him she was SHACKING UP.

So that also gives us the IMPRESSION MR. K has also been speaking to 2 DIFFERENT VERSIONS of DERN ...

or to the 2 DIFFERENT TWIN COPIES of her that we see LOOKING AT EACH OTHER from different sides of the STREET on the WALK of Fame.

And the EVIL TWIN COPY of DERN who gives her that EVIL CLOWN GRIN is probably also the ONE who tells MR. K she was SHACKING UP ... ???

whereas the other COPY told him she was married???

So the QUESTION becomes WHICH COPY was that of DERN who ENTERS the AXXON N DOOR in the BACK ALLEY of STAGE 4???

Yes, that's a good observation, and it also feeds into a point sort of related Palmtree's idea (which I quite like). The slight differences in dialogue COULD be attributed to "reshoots", ordered by the director after seeing the dailies. Some of the disorientation experienced by an actress "stuck in a role", or anyone for that matter working intensely on a film, can come from the temporal discontinuity associated with the shooting and reshooting of scenes out of script-time sequence. In that kind of confusion one could be in the middle of story that happened yesterday…but it's really tomorrow…"it isn't something you remember. Forgetfulness, it happens to us all. Oh, where was I? I can't seem to remember if it's today, two days from now or yesterday."

YES the RESHOOTS are also an interesting idea ...

and we definitely also have parts of the FILM and/or this story being presented to us OUT of SEQUENCE ...

or IN PIECES where there's NO REAL TIME SEQUENCE to them ...

or as the RABBITS say:

So what do we as the VIEWER DO with this CONFUSION ...

where we can't seem to remember if it's TODAY ...

How do we PUT IT TOGETHER in such a way that it isn't as CONFUSING for us as the way in which it is being presented to us???

ON THE FAKE TWIN COPY of the WALK of FAME.

What do you think of the IDEA that the MOVIE TITLE of INLAND EMPIRE refers to the AREA or MOVIE MAKING EMPIRE that is located INSIDE of the MOVIE LOT???

So maybe the IE TITLE is also meant to WARN US that NOTHING we see is REAL ...

just like the case where the MAGIC MAN in MD also explains how ITS ALL ILLUSION ...

Could be. It'd be a weak reference at best. Unlike Mulholland Drive, the term "inland empire" has no direct or indirect connection or connotation related to movie making. The reference to unreality, illusion and the inner land of the mind is pretty obvious.

MULHOLLAND DR is a REAL PLACE.

INLAND EMPIRE is also a REAL PLACE (also use to live there).

And as you may recall ...

GORDY also tells LUCAS that EVERYONE HAS GONE THERE ...

which also makes it HIGHLY UNLIKELY GORDY was saying EVERYONE had gone to THE inner land of their MIND.



So this is also what leads one to suspect the TITLE isn't meant to refer to the MIND anymore than MULHOLLAND DR refers to an inner land of the MIND in MD.

There's a MIND SET that is associated with MD and IE, but a DIRECT REFERENCE to an INNER STATE of MIND isn't made clear.

MD is more a reference being made to one's having MADE IT or had some SUCCESS as an ACTOR or DIRECTOR or WRITER or whatever the case may be.

Because that's where many of those who've been a SUCCESS go to live.

IE is where the LESS SUCCESSFUL go to live. And POMONA is also the place the HOMELESS people discuss getting to on the bus as DERN lays there and DIES right in front of them. Pomona is also located in the IE area of LA.

So its also a kind of INVERTED or ANTI MD type of area as one can see by the OUTSIDE of SMITHY'S HOUSE and the other HOUSE where THE PHANTOM LIVES.

Those HOMES look NOTHING like the place where LYNCH himself or the rest of his NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS live.

Well, I very much agree. But probably the S. California area xxpo mentions is a also a direct inspiration for the name...

But I think an even greater inspiration is that Missoula, Montana also resides in an area known as the Inland Empire. And of course, this is the town David Lynch considers home.

AND we also have GORDY telling LUCAS EVERYONE has GONE THERE to the INLAND EMPIRE.

AND we also KNOW GORDY DID NOT MEAN EVERYONE had gone to THE INNER land of SOMEONE's MIND when he tells LUCAS this.

Because that's just SILLY and ABSURD ...

even more so than anything LYNCH has ever said or done in a FILM.

GORDY definitely wasn't telling LUCAS EVERYONE HAD GONE INSIDE of THE MIND.

IT'S PERFECTLY OBVIOUS in that SCENE that he means a PHYSICAL LOCATION.

In the YOU TUBE CLIP topic is a link where they show LYNCH filming what looks like the OUTSIDE of SMITHY'S HOUSE, and apparently it's also located there in his own yard. So the location would also be a HIS HOUSE or his compound.

Not only because we see the PROP (PROP NUMBER 10) which takes up the ENTIRE LENGTH or WIDTH of STAGE 4 ...

(we see it sitting there as DERN turns around in her CHAIR to look at the back of the STAGE when DEVON mentions SMITHY'S HOUSE)...

but also because when one compares the SCENE where we appear to ENTER into that ARCH AREA ...

with the OTHER REAL ARCH AREA ...

one can also see how the PAINTING ENDS on the RIGHT HAND SIDE ...

whereas the photo of the REAL LOCATION in POLAND also has a BALCONY sitting there beside that 2ND story WINDOW AREA on the right hand side ...

and it also has a STREET LIGHT that REFLECTS off of that 2ND STORY WINDOW that has the BALCONY area that PROP 10 or the PAINTING does NOT HAVE.

With Lynch there are often several plots competing for interest, all of which are interesting and none of which will ever be resolved through conventional narrative.


So just like we have SEVERAL different PLOTS in MD ...

(ADAM'S STORY/Joe killing ED and 2 other people along with the VACUUM CLEANER/BETTY/DIANE'S STORY, etc) ...

we also have SEVERAL DIFFERENT PLOTS in IE.


Like Henry Miller, who once imagined a “House of Fiction” with different but related stories in each room, Lynch wants us to fall into a series of narrative rabbit holes leading to labyrinths full of sinister secrets and malevolent minotaurs.



This also seems to CONFIRM what LYNCH is doing with the way we have SEVERAL DIFFERENT PLOTS that also seem like we fall into different NARRATIVES ...

such as LOST GIRL'S STORY/DERN'S STORY/the RABBITS story/ ...

and finally into one that includes the SINISTER ONE LEG GIRL and the other girl with the MONKEY on her back.



In standard storytelling, narrative is the vehicle for themes to play out on a subtextual level.

This is how audiences have been conditioned to understand motion pictures. But in Lynch’s work, he strips away the pretense of narrative to allow audiences a more direct experience with the themes and subconscious truths within.

He makes the subtext into text, and for Lynch, the thematic text is always the same:

that of the innocent disillusioned and in danger of being corrupted.



But when was the SINISTER ONE LEG GIRL ...

who kills 3 kids when she's in the FIRST GRADE ...

and then kills her caretaker when she's age 8 ...

in the process where she escapes from the place where she's being held in detention and hops into the TRUCK with the TRUCK DRIVER ...

ever INNOCENT or IN DANGER???

Doesn't the ONE LEG GIRL also appear to be more of a NATURAL BORN KILLER than an INNOCENT being or someone who gets CORRUPTED???
