The original--a TV movie--had Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh and it was wonderful. From the early 70s I am guessing.

Yes, from 1976. I don't know which is better. Both are excellent.

I did see the original, 26 years ago.

The original is one of my all time favorite movies. I couldn't bring myself to see this version. I was happy to read in a spoiler on another thread that they didn't tinker with the ending. That's good news.
