Did anyone else....

Okay when I was 9 years old I remember reading the Felicity books and thinking that when Felicity grew up she'd probably marry Ben. Did anyone else think that or am I alone on this one?

reply

I never had that sense but I gather something's going to happen between Ben and Anabelle in *Very Funny, Elizabeth*.....

reply

Ewwwww, not anabelle

The penguins are calling and I can't find my way out of the labyrinth.

reply

Oh yes! I've *always* thought they should be together. Okay, I've only read up through when Addie was new, but I thought Felicity was the only one who had a budding romance.

And for the person who said they thought Annabelle and Ben...what are you, nuts?!?! LOL!

"Perform random kindness and senseless acts of beauty."

reply

Ah yes, you and I must be around the same age then because Addy was the last girl I read also. Maybe it's just something with our generation. But it did make sense though! The two of them confided in each other and it was common for daughter's of the house to marry their father's apprentices back then. And there really wasn't much of an age difference between the two of them when you think about it.

reply

Of course!

reply

Yay!!! I'm not alone!!!

The penguins are calling and I can't find my way out of the labyrinth.

reply

Actually, the age difference would have not made a single bit of difference, especially since Felicity would have been considered an adult only about a year or two after the books ended. I've thought about writing stories about Ben and Felicity...just never gotten around to it.

I actually did write one, but I was eleven at the time and it wasn't very good.

Yeah, i agree, I totally think Ben and Felicity SHOULD end up togther, but the odds of a teenage romance being in an American Girl movie are zero to none. But it would be great to see Felicity and Ben togther. Felicity's my favorite American Girl

reply

I doubt it would happen in the movie. She's only 10 afterall. I just meant that if you could see the future for them

The penguins are calling and I can't find my way out of the labyrinth.

reply

I always suspected something was going to happen between Ben and Felicity. It just seemed so perfectly logical to me. But I also realized that it was an American Girl Doll books series, and I think romance is strictly off limits for them, because like you said, she's only ten. But yes, I think a romance was definitely in the midst. If only they made the series American Teenage Girl Dolls or something. Then we would have had a romance between Ben and Felicity.

reply

I'm not alone! I thought I was too romantic, but it is so clear that Ben and Felicity definitely have some possibility--I remember getting the feeling in "Felicity Saves the Day" and has anyone been to American Girl Online to see the commercial? I swear they are hinting at it even in the movie, or it may just be me. And I've also tried to write stories and I'm considering petitioning Fanfiction.net to add an American Girl category. Anyone care to join me?

Say, how DO you create a new book for fanfiction.net

I sure would like to see some fan work for a Ben and Felicity romance. And, yes, you aren't alone. :) haha, I was JUST thinking about this today. What a coinkidink!

reply

Finally some area in which I have some expertise! I have taken it upon myself to create ffn categories before, so I know the ropes!
In order to suggest a new category, you must have a story already written. When I suggested my category, there were already many fanfics for that canon in the misc. section, so it was much easier for me. So if you want to read Felicity fanfics, you have to write one. After that, send an email to [email protected] explaining everything. I don't know if they have to have a minimum amount of emails before they start a new category or not, but it certainly helps if they receive emails from many people. After that just wait. Or you could just post whatever fanfics you have the Misc. Books section. Bonne chance! I may consider writing a fanfic to help get the section up.

You have to register, then download the document onto the website. I don't know if there is an American Girls section on there though. I'll have to check.

reply

If you're talking about Fanfiction.net, last check is that they don't have an American Girls section, hence why we are trying to get one started. If you would like to help, more power to you.

reply

By the way, for anyone interested, there actually is a Felicity fanfic on fanfiction.net. It's the only one I know of. It's actually in the Liberty's Kids section (located under cartoons) because it's a crossover between Liberty's Kids and Felicity. But it's not really a crossover. It seems to me like the author just said it was a crossover so she or he would have some place to put it. Anyway, it's titled 'The Fight for Freedom' by Riley Clearwater.

Bloop.

reply

Oh, I've started reading it but had to give up because I felt she ruined both Liberty's Kids and Felicity. I mean, she had great intentions, but making James Thomas Jefferson's son? And she totally ignored the series since she made Felicity's family loyalists. I think she has a good idea, but probably should've turned it into an original fiction with her own characters rather than massacring established characters. But checking his/her (I seriously think it is a girl) reviews, I seem to be in the miniority on my opinion of the story.

giraffeblimp, what's your FF.net account? Mine's MackenzieW and I'm currently sucked into HP, but trying to get out. I may use Felicity as a way to escape and help set up that American Girls category.

reply

I thought the story had potential, but I think that its crossover status greatly weakened what could have been a good story. I'm not a big fan of AU fanfiction since it seems to usually just eradicate the personalities of the characters (to which the authors claim "But it's AU" as if that makes everything better) but I'll take what I can get.

I'm P.I.D. And by the way, Rizzo rocks my socks. I haven't seen The Muppets in so long. Man, those were good times.

reply

Sorry off topic, sort off, isn't a funny coincidence that the show "Felicity", Felicity's one true love's name is Ben, sorry I was noticing this when everybody kept of stating "Felicity and Ben" over and over lol

Anyways back to topic, I loved those books as a girl, Addy was my fav but Felicity was my second and I always believed they'd marry when Felicity came of age(much like Jack and Sarah from Newsies)and it was common too...I wonder is there is Felicity+Ben fan fics out there, there has to be, I'll hunt ff.net and get back to you guys on it(I remember seeing one, so I know one exists)

Sidenote: Isn't awesome that Kevin Zegers got cast as Ben(he's so gorgeous!)? great casting there, also with the girl playing Felicity.

reply

Oh, with the characters? Did you read the reviewer who said Fanfiction allowed you to do whatever you wanted with and to the characters? Including changing the characters? That made me mad. I don't know...I'm trying to get a Felicity story up.

P.I.D.? Something tells me I've read some of your Liberty's Kids fics. I wrote one myself--"Saying Goodbye". And I love Rizzo. My mom loves Pepe, but he's not as funny as Rizzo was. My quote is from "A Muppet Christmas Carol"...my other fave Rizzo line is from "Muppets 4-D" in MGM where he pretends to be Mickey Mouse and Sam Eagle calls him on it: "Shh, they're tourists. What do they know?"

reply

I didn't see it (I don't watch 7th Heaven) but I think I may know to which promo you're referring. Was it the one that said "They've grown up together and (blah blah blah blah blah)?" It was a very Ben-centric promo and I was disappointed at the absence of John Schneider. I thought it was very strange, how focused on Ben it was. But at least now I know that they're keeping that "Ben ran away to join the army" plot in the movie. Gee, it's hard to imagine how they're going to fit it all in. I guess I'm just going to have to wait a week or two.

Bloop.

reply

I don't watch 7th Heaven either--my roommate does and that's how I saw it. It was very Ben centric, but I figured they were going to keep him running away since the first promo shows both him and Felicity on Penny and that's the only time I could think it. Some reason, I think they want to focus it on Felicity and Ben to draw in the hopeless romantics and have people forget she's only 9-10. Or it's just me.

PS: Saw your story. Good work!

"God save my little broken body."-Rizzo the Rat
"We are the music while the music lasts"--TS Eliot

reply

Yeah, I think that too, I hate to say it but there's not going to be any romance between the two in the movie, close friendship, yes, romance, hell no she's too young and if they were planning on it they would have gotten a much younger actor for Ben(Kevin Zegers is 21 and she's 12 in real life) or pulled a "Tuck Everlasting" and would have casted Evan Rachel Wood as her or something.

I would be beyond shocked(and happy)if there was any remote romance in the movie other than a kiss on the cheek or a hug. I see their relationship in the movie being innocent and sweet, hinting at a future romance much like what the movie Little Women did with Laurie and Amy(Christian Bale and a very young Kirsten Dunst)-think that scene in the carriage where Laurie jokingly promises Amy that he'll kiss her before she dies-I see it being like that

yeah, Felicity and Ben should have a romance. I can't wait to see the movie, I have the Felicity doll at home... Lol! I always thought so too, especially in the Christmas book when he escorted her to the dance at the end! I thought I was being too romantic since she was only ten and I was that age then too! I guess I'm not the only one. I used to think that they would someday get married when he came back from the war or something. I collected several of the dolls but Felicity was my favorite and still is.

reply

If you made Felicity and Ben a bit older(as in 17 and 23), I could see that in a fanfiction. In the books, Ben acts more the part of the elder brother(even though he isnt), but that always could lead to romance. :)

"...and I hardly need add, my own better judgement!"

reply

LOL. Yeah, I thought that too. When I was little, I thought 'They are so getting together when she grows up!' Haha. I hoped they would continue the AG series when the girls were older so they would hook up.

It's nice to know I wasn't the only one. :)

reply

Actually, considering the time period, you wouldn't have to even wait until she's 17. Remember, people got younger at much younger ages back then, since they didn't live as long.

"He who dies with the most toys is still dead."

reply

I got felicity when I was eight for Christmas, and I read the books soon after. Ever since then I have suspected that Felicity and Ben would end up together. If you read the book with that perspective, like I did about a year ago, it's so obvious. I'm 16 now and I still have Felicity and another doll sitting at the foot of my bed. I've always wanted them to make American Boy Dolls for the original girl's stories so that I could play out the Felicity/Ben plot line. It has such potential to be a romantic story.

reply

I never really thought of Ben/Felicity in a brother/sister sense because their fights were never like sibling rivalry. I know, I have an older brother and we're about the same age distance apart as Ben and Felicity are. I doubt they'll ever do an adult American Girl series of books. They did write one new Felicity book about Anabelle getting engaged and how it effects Elizabeth's life (I work at a bookstore). Question: Is it sad that I'm 22 and I'm the one who started this post?

The penguins are calling and I can't find my way out of the labyrinth.

reply

It's not sad. I'm 22 and I still read the books occasionally when I get sick of my college reading and need something light and happy to read. :) I'm kind of interested in reading some of the new books but I think I'd feel lame buying them. sigh.

reply

I know. I'm 23 and I wish I could find the books--I had Felicity's, Samantha's and Kirsten's. I remember getting the Samantha doll when I was 8 (this was before there was a Felicity doll). Ahh, nostalgia.

But at least my mom saved the doll and her accessories so I'll have something to give to my little girl, when I have one.

reply

I was exactly the same growing up. I actually used to sometimes pretend that I was Felicity and that something would happen with Ben. Even watching the movie tonight I was like, "Oh they are so sweet together!" I mean, in a sense it was like a brother/sister relationship, but it totally could be developed into something more when they grew up.
Remember when the History Mysteries came out for the slightly older girls? They were ok, but I was so disappointed they didn't use the dolls. I'd like to see Valerie Tripp write a series about Felicity grown up...and while we're at it, why not Molly an Josefina, too. And get Janet Shaw and Connie Porter and Susan S. Adler to recreate Kirsten, Addy, and Samantha.
I am a die hard AG fan--I have all the books through Josefina, a Kirsten doll, and a Samantha doll. Kirsten is what got me started b/c I am 1/8 Swedish.

reply

There were times it seemed brother/sister and other times you were reminding yourself she was only 10! I wish they would continue the books as well...American Girl has got to realize that their audiences do grow up and often, don't grow out of their books. It would be great for them to do a teenaged version of these girls. Of course, what sets them apart is where their stories take place. Felicity's on the eve of a Revolution, Molly's during World War II, Kirsten's as the immigrants come over, Addy's as the Civil War and slavery ends, so forth...but maybe at least one follow-up book...or epilogues...

"God save my little broken body."-Rizzo the Rat
"We are the music while the music lasts"--TS Eliot

reply

Well, I'm another American Girl fan who is happy not to be alone in wishing for a Felicity and Ben hook-up. Although throughout the movie the hints just made me cringe and shout at the tv "she's only ten!". My vote is that the next movie is Kirsten. I 'aged-out' of reading the books with Addy and am clueless about Kit. Does anyone else remember when there was just the three dolls and a catelogue? Before the flagship stores, before the lookalike dolls, before the empire?

reply

Actually, her being ten doesn't make it that big of deal considering how early girls had to grow up back then.

The penguins are calling and I can't find my way out of the labyrinth.

True, but I think they would wait until she was a little older than 10 to start marriage prospects.

Ha! I may be the oldest person reading this post (33), and not only do I remember when there were three dolls and a catalog, my mom wouln't get me one because, "I'm afraid they'll go out of business before you get all the accessories. They're lovely, but so expensive and I'm just not sure there's a market." I bring this up to her periodically. I also liked the old accessories better. Anyone remember Molly's lunch sacks and paper napkins? Or Felicity's chocolate pot, since they didn't drink tea?

There is a happy ending. My husband bought me Lindsay, because she looks just like me at that age. My seven year old loved the movie and now wants Felicity. She also wants to make a sampler and take tea pouring lessons!

That's it. We HAVE to petition fanfiction . . . I'm writing an email. And a story. Because, picture, this - Felicity is 17, Ben in 23 - and let's say he went off to the war when he was sixteen like suggested - well, then! Plot set up! And he comes back to finish out the apprenticeship and there's a grown up Felicity - Wow, guys, this is exciting. I think I'll go write a fic instead of doing my homework.

Plus, the guy playing Ben is hot. And he escourted her to the ball.

Yes! I thought I was the only one. I haven't seen the movie yet but the books definately show potential at a future romance between the two. As I've said before, he may be older than her but he seems to think of her as an equal, not a little kid. I never actually wrote a fanfic but I thought about it.
As for Ben and Annabelle, she had a crush on him and, although they never say how he feels about her, I suspect he wouldn't like her. She's always talking about how England is better and insults the patriots while Ben is a staunch patriot, almost to a fault.
I started to write a Samantha prequel about Grandmary and the Admiral (I've always suspected there was more to their history than meets the eye) but I never finished it.
