1 reason.....The Reason against Mass Vegetarianism

Over-Population

Every year animals are hunted and killed by gunshot for sport but it helps control over-population. See if we didn't control the population of some animals the food chain would be all off and some lower chain animals would become extinct.

Now I'm not saying all vegetarians should become meat-eaters. But I'm sick of vegetarians saying all meat-eaters should become vegetarians when in reality we do need a balance in order for it to work. When I say this I mean we need at least 50 percent of the population to be meat-eaters or the balance would be off.

I hear you, and I hop back and forth on the veg issue, but:

1) why isn't there a deer and duck industry instead of a beef industry, then? We raise beef just to be slaughtered, and hunt deer sometimes letting it go to waste (and underhunt leading to roadkill, due to overpopulation).

2) the reason they are "over-populated" is because we invade their habitat with suburban sprawl, then need to hunt them to keep them out of our new Best Buys.

Again, I don't disagree with you... I just find the matter to be complicated.

you hit the nail on the head!

I'm not really like that... except when I am.

The most important factor governing animal numbers is the amount of food available to them.

Um ... I was persuaded to not eat meat, many years ago, by animal activists who educated me. So ... I do not think I am wasting my time by being one now that I have changed my ways!

"they're not inherently bad people just because they don't see the harm in eating meat (as we have done since the dawn of time)"

I won't argue that meat eating is unatural as we have evolved to be omnivores (and vegetarians who claim otherwise drive me nuts)but the reason some vegetarians berate meat eaters is that they do see the harm in eating meat and like most people when they see something harm being done for no reason they feel obligated to say something.
The basic premise behind living a vegetarian diet is to reduce harm and that harm comes in many forms, damage to the enviorment, cruelty to animals, and a healthier diet. While the last one is can be argued against as meat in moderation is perfectly healthy (ignoring the hormone and antibiotic issues) the first two most definatly have merit and many vegetarians believe that especially in our western society there is a lack of information regarding the harms done to the envorment and the harm caused by inflicting suffering on the billions of animals that are farmed for consumption. This harm combined with the fact that meat eating is optional for most people creates a situation that needs to be addressed and many of us feel an ethical obligation to point out that it is possible to reduce the harm and suffering we currently inflict. The bottom line is that if we treated our pets the way livestock is treated we would be charged with cruelty to animals and this shows that in both law and the publics eye it is wrong to inflict suffering on other creatures exept in extreme situations yet we still inflict suffering on an industrial scale and mostly behind closed doors and just ignore the harm we are doing.
Please understand that we are speaking out against the majority view for something that we truly believe in and there is a long history of a social minority figting for change be it with slavery or discrimination in our society and to not speak up against something you truly believe is wrong is just cowardly. so three cheers for outspoken vegetarians as they are at least trying to do something to make the world a better place and reduce the harm that meat eating does to both the enviorment and animals.

Addmitedly some vegetarians are idiots and i have to admit if i see too many more claims that the human animal is an obligate herbivore i might just go out and slaughter myself some meat to make a point (ok that's sarcasm for all you meat eaters) but i think those that see the the majority in a society behaving in a way that is morally objectional (and yes paralells can be drawn to the minority who thought slavery was wrong) and contradictory (try treating a dog the way a pig gets treated and see how long it takes for charges of animal cruelty to come your way) have a responsibility to speak up and try to explain to others why they are so troubled by what they see as an immoral act. I just don't don't understand how people can justify the amount of cruelty that is implicit in meat eating and i do feel it is my responsibility to argue my point of view.

Have you maybe ever noticed that there is a difference between dogs, cows, cats, sheep, goats, horses...? Have you noticed that there is a difference between people when it comes to the way we behave to each other? If somebody punches you once in head you can sue him and maybe put him in jail. But if somebody keeps beating another person for ten minutes, hurting him badly, sending him to hospital, he is glorified as a world champion. If you sing a certain song in one country you'll be a hero, in neighbor country you'll go to jail, in some distant country nobody would care not even recognizing the song. If you drink wine you can be popular, you can be rejected as a drunk, or you can be stoned for breaking the law and insulting certain religion.

So if we act so differently to each other, how could we act equally to all the animals? Finally, if we should treat every pig and cow as our pet dog, does it mean the same for rats and cockroaches? They are animals as well, so how can we have double standards? Do you feed your rat regularly and do you let your cockroach lay on your bed?

reply

Yes there are differences and some of them are pretty huge but in almost all societies Murder, slavery and rape are considered punishable crimes as would your example of someone beating someone else in the head for ten minutes ( i realize you are using boxing as an example but except under a very structured set of rules and conditions this behavior is not ok or encouraged) so yes there is a trend to adopting certain rules of behavior that have changed a lot over the last few hundred years so there is hope that one day we will treat animals a lot more fairly and stop eating them unnecessarily.
As for your second comment there is a lot of difference (at least according to the best information available today to suggest a major difference in the ability of mammals and insects to suffer ans when it comes to rats one could argue that due to their tendency to spread disease that some suffering might be necessary for an individuals survival (not that i have ever found it necessary to kill a rat myself) and most vegetarians would not argue against killing in order to survive rather than just because something tastes good.
Your argument is pretty weak and it is the protests of people who believe they are seeing others act immorally that have moved us forward as a society in the past and will do so in the future, so i for one will continue to point out to others wen i see them behave in a way i (and a significant minority of other folk) i consider to be wrong.

So vegetarians that are just very passionate about their cause and beliefs are idiots, yet all you omnivores out there are not because you simply accepted that your omnivorous diet is natural? Ok then...

And let's talk about overpopulation. Humans. Why don't I just go around shooting my neighbors because there are too many people in the world?? The planet right now cannot continue sustaining all the people on it for much longer...talk about overpopulation.

Overpopulation of humans is a myth. It's a problem of distribution, management and waste.

I'm a vegetarian (trying to be vegan) and I don't mind eating or living with meat eaters. It's been over 20 years since I ate meat and I don't remember why I quit.
I get tired of meat eaters trying to get me to eat meat. I don't tell people what to eat, and don't have any vegetarian friends. If all veggies are like the ones described in this post then I think the meat eaters should be happy I don't care what they eat.

So yes I'll agree with you that we need all kinds omnivores, veggies, and meat eaters in our species. I don't want those damn cows eating my veggies.

Because of a pamphlet my daughter brought home about the animal cruelty that goes on in the corporate farms, I was close to becoming at least vegetarian and to buy animal by-products like honey, milk and eggs from local, small farms. It was the scene where the rancher shows his acreage that butted up against a new housing development that convinced me that wasn't the way to go either. I was thinking, it would have probably been more cruel if the newly freed cows had wandered off because how long would it have been before they wandered into someone's backyard, on the expressway and gotten hit by a car or truck or died of starvation? So I figured the answer is much more humane living conditions for animals because the other problem would be their overpopulation. Predators are a necessary part of equalizing the balance of some animals.

Es todo bueno!
