Why hasn't Tarsem gained more traction?

His filmography isn't stellar perhaps but at least he tries to bring something new with each film. Meanwhile hacks like Paul W.S. Anderson or David Goyer keep getting these big budget projects.

I think it’s because the extraordinary films he’s made haven’t been been released in the major theaters and not enough people have seen them. When this first came out I had to go to an alternative arts movie theater to see it.

I think he was tarnished by proximity to JLo. A shame. I really loved The Fall.

I don't quite follow? Were they dating?

JLo starred in The Cell. IIRC that was Tarsem's first big picture (I can't be bothered to look it up since I'm grubbing on a Wendy's breakfast sandwich). I think there was/is a preconception of what JLo brings to a movie and that conflicted with movie's advertised vibe.

It's all about the Benjamins, baby! Paul W.S. Anderson has made studios an absolute BOATLOAD of cash with the Resident Evil pictures.

The Fall (fantastic though the picture was), made a little over a tenth of its budget back in theatres (although a couple of his flicks have made some good cash).

Hollywood is about making money. Tarsem didn't achieve that with movies they've greenlit. Eventually that creates a reputation and thus scares off studio producers.
