Homoerotic?

I'm just going by the pics...but is this homoerotic like "The Covenant" was? I'm not saying that's a BAD thing...I'm just wondering.

reply

i agree that it definitely looks that way from what ive seen in the trailor, haha.

Not really, unless you would include anti-gay slurs as being homoerotic? There are boys running around without their shirts on, a couple of perjorative references to gay oral sex, and an implied gay relationship off-camera between one character and a now-dead one (to be clear, they were both alive at the time...). There was, surprisingly, a scene that was supportive of homosexuals -- but that was like a leaky raft at sea compared to all the verbal contempt. BTW, what's up with all these anti-gay homoerotic thrillers with young handsome men? It seems a few directors in LA Land have issues...

reply

"anti-gay homoerotic thrillers"? I haven't seen "Driftwood" but "The Covenant" wasn't anti-gay at all. Heck there was even a totally unmotivated kiss between two guys! Other than those two I can't think or any other thrillers like that.

I already seen the movie, and no, I don't think it's homoerotic at all

and for the people that are saying their going by the pics, that pic where you saw all the boys in seperate beds like that, that pic has to do with some kind of bad dream that the main character has, where the dream has to do with the camp being more like a mortuary, that is why the pic looks like that(they also said that in the commentary too on what that dream is supposed to mean)

I seen homoerotic movies before, and this is defaintly not one of them

(my sig) the movie I most anticipate for 2009

Sorry, I must've been confused by the talk about giving each oral sex and who is dating whom all told through pejorative slurs -- yet later defending an apparently gay character which doesn't end well. I didn't so much have a problem with any of it (other than getting tired of characters throwing around the F word), I just had no idea WHAT it had to do with anything else in the movie.

reply

Wow juvenile deliquents using the F word...how rare and unusual. I think there's some subtle hints that Noah and Jonathan were lovers. When Ricky asked the Captain about Jonathan and he screamed "He's a fag" He could've just been being a jerk, who knows.

yes this film showed some hints that Noah and Jonathen might have been lovers, but I don't think it counts as homoerotic, because they don't try to be sexy about it, and they don't even do it that much in the movie, it's more like small clues where you would only notice it if you were paying close attention to the film

reply

I found this movie to be pretty gayish.

reply

Pretty gayish? Wow, talk about immature. Actually, it wasn't homoerotic at all, there were just some scenes that showed support and/or subtle hints toward gay characters. Nothing wrong with that!

I think part of the subplot of Noah being gay was also used to highlight an issue that the gay community is facing today: the thought that homosexuality is a "disease" and can be cured. Noah being gay and hints that Jonathon was gay were issues that the film really dwelled on.
The point where I really felt like Jonathon might have been gay was actually when David refuses Myra's advances and she says "Daddy was right. You are a *beep* I felt like that showed how sensitive Kennedy was to homosexuality -- anyone who pisses him off, anyone who disappoints him like Jonathon did must be a *beep* just like Jonathon.

Jonathon being gay is probably the reason why Kennedy enrolled him at Driftwood to begin with. Then he starts hanging out with another gay kid, Noah, and that sends Kennedy over the edge. I mean, they never address WHY Kennedy is so disappointed in Jonathon. He just keeps saying, "You were the closest thing to a son I ever had."

I know that Driftwood isn't technically a juvenile correctional facility, more of a "camp," but still... what good parents would put their son away for being gay? I'm surprised they even admitted him; it could easily be argued as unconstitutional.
Then again, Kennedy wasn't exactly concerned with constitutional rights...

I think any film with young good looking guys in confined quarters together has homoerotic energy to it for someone who is a homosexual like myself. This movie got me really excited! I enjoyed it. 9/10

reply

VERY homoerotic.
Although it's not clear that was the screenwriter's intention.
