My Analysis of Chaos Theory

“The most important thing about love is that we choose to give it, and we choose to receive it. Making it the least random act in the entire universe. It transcends blood, it transcends betrayal and all the dirt and makes us human.” -Frank Allen, Chaos Theory

The movie “Chaos Theory”, in a nutshell, is a practical look at the power of the Butterfly effect and how it can turn your life around 180 degrees. For those not familiar with the Butterfly Effect, it goes by the saying: “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?”. An interesting thought! And in our day to day lives, this seems to be the case. Although we don’t always see the direct effects of our actions, it is there nonetheless. For example, if you give a public speech, you have a chance to impact the lives of everyone who is in attendance to hear your speech! Any interaction with another person could change either of your lives dramatically. These are just a few ways that the Butterfly Effect is at work in your life.

In Chaos Theory, we meet Frank Allen, a time management guru. He plans every aspect of his life on note-cards. One day, his wife Susan sets the clock back 10 minutes. Seemingly, not a big deal. However, this causes Frank to be late to a time management/efficiency speech (ha-ha!), and sets off a whole course of events eventually leading him to a shocking revelation. I will not reveal this, for those who haven’t seen the movie. You’ll just have to watch it! And it will be worth your 90 minutes.

There is some serious mockery going on throughout the movie, which I found to be brilliant. First, we have the mocking of rigid people who abide completely by their schedules/time planners/note-cards/to-do lists. Then, we have the mocking of people who live a free, no holds-barred, living in the now, modern Epicurean lifestyle: “”Eat, drink and be merry”. These are 2 extremes on the spectrum, as you will see in the movie. The overall message is this: If you plan too much, you will be too busy in your day-to-day arrangements to be happy. If you are too much concerned with living in the moment and being daring, you will continuously be “seeking the next high”. This is dangerous in and of itself. Practically, you won’t really find the answer by watching movies. Movies like Chaos Theory, however, can lead you down the right path. Don’t be afraid to try new things out! If you don’t plan at all, maybe you could create some sort of small daily routine? If you plan too much, maybe you could cut your planning to 6 days out of 7. Have one day a week, where you can do whatever you want!

Life is what you make it. Check out “Chaos Theory”, and learn more about it! In addition to all of this great information, we have an illustration of forgiveness and love. What did you think of the movie?
