The accents...

Seriously, why so many American actors playing British? I just don't understand why you would decide to cast a movie in that way. There didn't really seem to be any reason to set it in Britain. Some of the accents were okay (like Mike Vogel, I didn't even realize it was him until the end of the movie) but others? I like Katherine but it wasn't great. And Mena's? Awful!! Honestly it would've made more sense to just keep the same cast, have them play their own accents and then set it in a non-specific locale.

reply

I did no think the accents were bad at all. Mena's accent was not that bad and Mike vogal surprised with his.

A funny, quirky little film but the English accents were VERY transparent to a Londoner like myself. I never will understand why they force people to speak in an accent they can't do, why not let them use their original accents in the first place and concentrate on the acting?

reply

They were transparent to this american. Half the time the cast kept slipping out of their accents.

reply

Wtf! Mena's had to be one of the worst I've heard in my entire life! Horrendous!

reply

Maybe it's because I'm from neither country but, as far as I could tell, the English actors had English accents and the American actors had American accents.

reply

Apart from Mena trying to do Bart Simpson, do a 18th century cockney, I thought it was ok.

But i agree - just let them do there own accents - London is so cosmopolitan anyway and you'll find all the accents going. If they wanted to be brutally honest, then mena should have been attempting an Eastern European accent. They seem to have the monopoly on London cafe waitering jobs these days.

reply

The accents may sound normal to people who are not very familiar with english accents but for those who are it is very distracting and a little embarassing to have to watch a movie while one of the main characters attempts unsuccessfully to do an accent. I'm refering in particular to Mena who is usually very watchable. I don't get it! Why did she need to have an accent? It didn't sound real and it didn't need to be done. They should only let convivcing actors do this in films, like Kate Winslet. Her American accent is seamless.

I can't stop using the lines "dodgy prostate" and "fancy a shag"

.. a proper shag .. PRICELESS! Daz is awesome in this role.

reply

i have to say most of the accents were ok most of the time appart from mena's who most of the time sounded like a mix of american, south african and australian.

reply

Ewan McGregor got slaughtered for his accent in 'The Island' - which personally I thought was great. This film? Apart from Mike, the accents were apalling!!! Ewan deserves an oscar for his accent in comparison!!
Suvari? What was that? Why not put British actors in? And why film in LA? Madness. But the main question - why even make this apalling script?

reply

Can't. Watch. Ears. Bleeding.
What are there, three actual English people in this whole film? It's sickening. Is there a shortage of English people all of a sudden? Come on.

Real English/British actors in this movie

DAZ CRAWFORD:STEVE
MARSHA THOMASON: RACHEL
CALLUM BLUE: CHARLIE
ROSS WITT: LUCY
ANDREW LEE POTTS: MIKE
SONIA WALGER: GLORIA
ORLANDO SEAL: MARK
MARK DIAMOND: DAVID
ANDREW ABLESON: JOHN
THAT MAKES NINE, NOT QUITE '3' AS SOMEONE HERE 'ASSUMES'
CONSIDERING THERE ARE ONLY 13 MAIN CHARACTERS, I'D SAY IT’S A PRETTY GOOD AND FAIR PERCENTAGE.

reply

Mena's accent was as dreadful as real life Madonna's british accent. Actually worse. It is right up there with Costner's in Robin Hood. Why not just let her play an American settled in London?

Everyone wants to be Meryl Streep. But you need to know your limitations.

reply

It goes both ways. I've heard British actors do badly with American accents, too.

As for this film, Mena's accent was awful. Painfully obvious. I didn't think Mike Vogel's was bad, and Katherine Heigl was only in the film for about 5 minutes, so I didn't really focus on hers.

reply

I agree. It would have been fine having the American's just using their own accents. Mena was just embarrassing. *cringes*
