Weak scene

I liked the movie and for the most part enjoyed that there wasn't anything over the top or too contrived in it, except for the parking lot scene. Seriously, wtf?
Totally weak setup: the entire movie he's a reclusive type of guy who's nevertheless straightforward and direct with everyone he deals with, and now all of a sudden he's gonna pull a stalker move and sneak up on her in an empty parking lot at night just to say something he could've easily approached her about in the rec center? And she's got the mace on a hair trigger to boot? This would've flown in any lowbrow shlockey thriller/horror flick but it didn't fit here.
I get that it's a plot device to setup their getting together but it was pretty clumsy.
