So was Gary Soto and Arana the same dude?

They left that episode vague as hell. Was Gary Soto a bad guy or what?

Yes he was, he was sheep dipped (recruited by the CIA).

Its a bit of a grey area. This story is taken directly from Hanney's book 'Inside Delta Force' which this show is based on.

In the book, Hanney's unit was sent to take out a rebel leader and his troops. After the battle, when they recovered the body of this rebel leader, they found that it was in fact one of his colleagues from Delta Force, and his men had been indiginous forces which he had been sent to train by the CIA for an uprising in Central America I believe.

It appears that the government tried to make it look like he had gone rouge, but in the book Hanney firmly believes that his former colleague was betrayed by the CIA, who most likely decided to pull the plug on the operation and had to deny American involvment in the region.

Its been a couple of years since I read the book but think that was the gist of it.

Some Unit members thought Soto just went rogue (I remember Ryan suggesting it) but Jonas believed he was tapped by the CIA as the other comments mentioned. I think it is hinted at again when Bob is later recruited in a very aggressive manor by the CIA and when he refuses they try to destroy the unit that Jonas was right about the CIA.
