Fan Fiction Question

I write Supernatural themed fan fiction that I don't really want to share, but I was wondering... if I did, how would I go about it? I write in Word and I'm not techy.

For me, the most user-friendly and accessible is Archive of Our Own (Ao3)

https://archiveofourown.org/

I'm not sure if you still need an invitation to join but if you do, let me know. You don't need to be a member to read, but you do to post (and I think, to comment). ETA: It looks like you do - if you decide you want to join, let me know and I'll send you an invite. Edited again to add: it seems they are not letting members have invites right now, but you can request it yourself from the main page.

I'd love to read what you've written! I've only written one in the SPN fandom but I'm currently working on another for the Dean Winchester Big Bang.

Thanks for info. I'm a bit shy to have anyone read my stuff... plus it's not very good. But over this winter I'm having a go at a Winchester story that's not all sex and violence which I might be tempted to share. I've saved the link. Thanks.

You're welcome. I'm positive you are better than you think! And if you'd like/want a beta reader I'd be happy to do it for you. I've only posted a couple things and it is nerve wracking, but it's also kind of satisfying when you get positive feedback.

The good thing about Ao3 is you can copy/paste from Word doc and it will do the formatting for you. Commenting and responding to comments is also very user friendly.

Interesting read even though I normally don't like AU's. So just one? Or do you have more elsewhere. Would love to read more.

Thanks. If I ever do get a chance to ask Jensen a question, that would be it. If he thinks Dean would change things in that particular moment if he had the chance to go back.

This is my only SPN fic, though I am in the process of writing one for the Dean Winchester Big Bang.

I've read it twice. It's brilliant. I'm even more shy now to share. My stories are more 'Fabio on the cover' type romance. But I have one I need to fix up and will share with you, gonzosgirrl, if you have time.

Thanks to everyone for responding. I haven't actually read much Supernatural fanfiction, but certainly will now.

Some awesome talents out there.

Thank you, that's very kind. And absolutely, I'd be happy to read and/or beta your story. There is room for ALL kinds of stories in the ff world. And quite honestly, there is some pretty awful stuff out there, but there is also some of the best fiction I've read anywhere - better than a whole lot of published work I've read.

I'll pm you my email address. I'm excited!

It can be scary to share. But it's also a way to get genuine feedback and can help you improve your writing (if that's your goal).

www.fanfiction.net is another option. I've heard people complain about the interface, though. Ao3 and FF tend to have slightly different focus' so it depends on your preference (Ao3 has less rules which is why some people prefer it). Posting on both would probably get you a wider audience and a lot of people do that. I've never used either site as a writer, though, so no uploading experience.

You could also just make your own livejournal or ... I forget the other popular one. There's several alternatives.

Livejournal is good (longtime member here), but if you don't have a following already or post in an existing community, it's hard to get readers.

I've never tried posting to ff.net but I read all the time that writers have problems responding to reviewers. Definitely going to get a wide audience posting to both though!

I post stories on all three sites: LJ, A03, and FFdotNET. LJ is pretty much a ghost town even if you do post to different communities. I find that signing up for LJ just so you can post in the comms and then link to your A03 and/or FFdotNET acconts works just as well as posting to LJ itself. LJ is a nightmare to post stories to, especially if your chapters are long. I wouldn't recommend it for posting if you're not tech-minded.

A03 is very straight-forward and easy to post to. Even I could do it (and I'm not a techy either). You do have to request an invite, though...but I certainly would do that.

FF.net is fairly easy to post to (not quite as user friendly as A03), but it's been around for a lot longer, and I find that I get a little more traffic to FFdotNET than I do A03...but I'm a gen-fic writer, so my numbers are always fairly humble...and slash fiction might get more of an audience on A03, since as someone said above, that site has fewer restrictions.

If I were you, I'd look into posting on A03 and FFdotNET. You can download a completely different user name so it can be totally anonymous. But its a lot of fun. The way I look at it...writing (and posting) a story is a chance to give back (or add to) the community. I read a metric poop-ton of fanfic, so it's nice to participate and kind of give back since I take so much. There's something for everyone, and if you like the stories you write, there is a 100% chance that you will find an audience.

Granted, the fandom is older, so some writers will always be more popular/more established, but it's a good way to interact with others. I've met all of my fandom friends through reading/writing fanfic.

As others have said...just give a shout if/when you ever want to post a story. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a coach to walk you through the process. And I'm certainly willing to lend a hand should you ever need it. Just PM me.

I've never had any problems with ff.net, that's where I post the bulk of my stuff. You might also look into Wattpad.

In general I find the quality of writing on FF.net lower then AO3 also.

As an avid reader of SPN fan-fic on AO3 and I would love to see what you write. I always try to search out new writers and see what they have to say. I comment regularly and honestly see very very few bad comments, some people 😠. But most are thanks and possibly suggestions for future works. More often then not the comments are asking for more. I understand your shy but give us a try.

Thing is - I write quickly as my brain is whirling about all enthused. Then when I go back to repair grammar and punctuation it all seems silly and not very good.

But thanks to everyone for their encouragement.

Some writers have a beta do a read through and make suggestions to you before posting. That's a route if you want to get some one-on-one feedback before diving in. Either way it's all about sharing with others. Trust me when I say there are several degrees of silly and cheesy out there already. I'm sure you're fine.

I've used FF.net, AO3 and LJ to post stories. If this is your first time posting I recommend sticking to AO3. It's a lot more user friendly. You also have better tagging options and getting feedback from your readers. FF.net hasn't really grown with the times and unfortunately if you're having an issue they are notorious to get help from. I lost the password for my account there and in 3 years they have never responded back. AO3 might take a bit but they at least do.
