Where can we petition to get the series restarted again???

Just watched the DVD, and I have to say that the network cancelled the show too early.

Its excellent, it gets better starting with the sea ep.

This show has great potential.

If you hated it so much, what exactly are you doing in this section?

He's criticising a show he didn't like in it's right forum. Do you believe that this place is only for people who like the show ? I came here to learn a bit more about it and I'm glad that his opinion is different from the ones who love the series. Since I didn't watch the show yet, I find different viewpoints very helpful.

Quite a show, in my humble opinion. I picked it up today, having missed this when it was on TV (I can never keep up with tv schedules), and I have already watched 3 episodes and I liked them all. I'd love to see an FX or USA revive this series.

As for the original, it weas good too, but I am open to remakes.

reply

I agree. ABC absolutely abandoned this series from the get-go. They never promoted it, put it up against CSI and then cancelled it before it even got a chance to grow an audience.
I liked it right from the pilot. But it was obvious that it was getting better with each episode. Unfortunately, not much of a chance of doing any more episodes. Frank Spotnitz, the producer, has moved on I believe. I know they will be showing all 10 episodes over the summer on the Sci-Fi Channel.

It's a shame how this show was treated, but typical of network television. They rarely give a show a chance to build momentum. If it's not an instant hit, they drop it.

reply

Oh, I totally agree. When I found out it was up against CSI, I couldn't believe it. My first thought was, to be honest, "Of course. They would put it up against another show that I like." Then I was like, "Wait a second, they're puting it up against *CSI*?! Are the out of their minds?" And do they not realize just how rare instant hits are? Hell, how many things are considered classics now that were not so popular when they started out? If they'd had the sense to put the show in a better time slot and give it a chance to grow a fan base, it might still be on the air. It clearly had a lot of potential for a strong fan base, since it managed to survive as long as it did, especially against a show like CSI. Nowadays, most shows get cancelled after only two episodes.

I can see why the first version of Night Stalker was cancelled. It was a little too slapstick for the subject matter and people just couldn't take it seriously. But this version... It could have been so great if it had really been given a chance.

reply

I know what you mean. I really loved this show, and they never gave it a chance. Unlike what most networks do with shows, they didn't even TRY with this one. Most shows are at least given the benefit of the doubt, from the start. If they don't take off immediately, most of the time they attempt changing nights or time slots, before they cancel. They never even tried that, with Night Stalker. It's really pretty sad, and makes it obvious they just didn't want to make this show.

No, 'Night Stalker' wasn't given enough time to gain momentum and show whether it had potential or not. That's often the case these days, with decent shows being cancelled prematurely when they may well have gone on to be great. I also think the problem with this show is that nothing happened, no progress was made in terms of Kolchak's investigations. If perhaps, they had aimed for flashier, more involving episodes in the first season where you did get the feeling that Kolchak would one day find what he was looking for and kept the darker mythology for a later season when it had core fans then maybe it wouldn't have been pulled so soon.

I personally loved the show from the get go and was so utterly disappointed that they took it off the air in the first place, but to take it off the air in the middle of a two part episode? come on!!! the dvd however is an excellent item to own and I have already begun watching the dvd for the second times. I agree that the network didnt give it enough time on the air and it did have quite a cult following especially for the short amount of time it was on the air. How is it that this show (the only show I ever really watched every week) was taken off so early and survivor is on its fifty-thousandth season? it doesnt seem at all like all the ratings go where they should.

ok for someone who has never heard of the original night stalker and someone who doesnt't get involved with 'is x-files better' or whatnot. i think nightstalker is excellent. It's interesting, spooky and does very well at drawing the audience in to watching the episode. I haven't seen the whole series yet but i'd be completly for another season.

reply

If you look up Monster Zero Productions on Google, their doing a remake of nightstalker. Their very talented writers, and they take pride in their work, so I suggest checking it out.

reply

ABC just didn't want to support this show.

reply

Okay, here's the scoop. ABC was more concerned about Alias than their new show. They purposely put Night Stalker up against CSI so they could move Alias to the 8 o'clock time slot that should have belonged to Night Stalker because they knew Alias was losing popularity and this was a last ditch effort to save it. I guess they figured that if they managed it then no one would care about Night Stalker or, at best, they'd be able to keep their old money-maker and have a reasonable competitor with CBS for the Thursday 9 o'clock slot (AKA: CSI). Instead, they ended up losing both shows.

*Claps* Way to go morons.

reply

I really enjoyed this show and was surprised that it did get cancelled. I would watch it if they put it back on the air.

... most of us watched the original Kolchak when we were school kids and it burned an impression on our little brains; next time it's on Sci-Fi try watching it without the filter of nostalgia. It's so corny. If you've read any interviews with Darren McGavin, he hated the show. He fought all the time trying to steer it away from the monster-of-the-week format. I think the new Night Stalker was trying to do something different with a nod to the past. Kolchack's Mustang is almost a perfect metaphor for what the show was striving to be; Reminds you of the old, but it slicker and faster. It only had one season, so I don't think it had a chance to find it's legs. I agree they should have gone with someone grittier and included a lot more humor. Some of the best X-files (and the darkest) were also hilarious. The episode "Home" comes to mind. The shadow of Darren McGavin is a lot longer than ABC imagined...

reply

Well, with all due respect to the late, great Mr. McGavin, I loved it for the very reason he hated it. So, I'm afraid it's completely impossible for me to watch the occasional SCIFI re-runs "untainted" (note the sarcastic quotes) by nostalgia.

I'd sign an f---ing petition... I loved this show! ;-)

reply

I didnt even know it had aired on ABC until I startted reading this post, Ive only seen two episodes and I love the show, I like how Stuart Townsend and Gabrielle Union play off one another, I think that it could have been something good, I personally never have watched CSI or Alias, theyre not my style. I would sign a petition and I know of 5 other people who would as well.

reply

I just watched the DVD for the whole season and I loved it! I cannot believe that ABC cancelled it. :(

reply

I love it also. Too bad they aren't continuing this. It's like Firefly all over again :( (Fox canceled it after a few episodes but had shown it out of order).

so is there a petition for us to sign to get this series going again? I'm fine even if they made a tv series paperback book...

reply

I just finished the dvd of the series and now I am so sad. It really was getting better with each episode. This show could have done better in a different time zome - far, far away from CSI. I would love more, but it doesnt look likely.

so would i

I guess Chris Carter's name doesnt hold weight any more....:(
I really loved this show...maybe I can make my own fan webisodes

reply

Oh please do. I would love to see some of the lose ends wrapped up.
The original series was wonderful, I loved it. I couldn't wait for it to come on every week.
I really think the new show could have been great as well if only it had been given a chance. It had a good story thread and the mystery of who Kolchak might be was well played. It sort of had an X-Files feel about it.
If there is anyone out there who may know of a fanfiction site let me know. I've found the one on FF.net but there are so few stories.

reply

Yes...how dare anyone try anything new with a corny old property...I mean, hell...it clearly didn't work when they tried it with Battlestar Galactica...

reply

I liked the original series and I liked this one. I didn't consider it a remake, I considered it a 'modern adaptation'.
The last episode on the DVD was the best IMO. I wish they would have continued it, it honestly didn't have a chance.

reply

But, you'll notice that the remake of BSG is enjoying that success on SCIFI Channel (a la STARGATE: SG1). If ABC had tried to do the remake (a la DRAGNET w/ex-Al Bundy), then EJO would have been just as big a one-season wonder as the original Commander Adama.

Moral of the story? ABC should permanently give up any notion of doing updated remakes of their now-classic former series.

yeah maybe SCIFI could pick it up like they did with SG...

reply

let this be the petition - somebody bring it back!

reply

Okay, here's the low-down. There is a petition. I'll post the link in a sec. It's pretty low right now and the creator is hoping to reach 500, 000 (a little much, sure, but it's worth a try).

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/nightstalker

Get anyone you can to sign it. Sign it again and again if necessary. Also, I read in the new People that Jericho on CBS was not renewed for a second season until the fans bombarded the company execs with 20 tons of peanuts (some show thing, I guess). And now the show is coming back for 7 more episodes.

Is there anything else we can do?
