Why do you think this show failed to get Lost type ratings?
I would say because it started out slow. Lost became boring after a season or two.
- Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

It failed because it was to good. Imho way better then Lost.
Lost was one of those shows that is hanging a carot before the viewers
nose for seasons and just piling mystery on mystery to get the viewer
hooked. Compared to that Invasion was way more rewarding in its single
season and showed a progessing development on multiple levels.

I loved invasion but it wasn't even close to Losts ballpark.
shareI know exactly why and I remember thinking at the time "Why would they do this unless they WANTED the show to fail?"
This would aire after LOST but during Greys Anatomy (Or the other way around, after Greys Anatomy but during LOST) so not only was this on at 10:00pm during a weekday, but you had to chose between this and either LOST/Greys Anatomy which at the time were both huge TV shows.
So that's why.
"It's so simple a six year old could figure it out."
"Quick! Someone get a six year old!"
You may be correct that they set the show up to fail, but it isn't possible that it aired up against either Lost or Greys as Invasion was also an ABC show. I think it went up against CSI, but can't be sure. I do know it was up a big show at the time.
EDIT:
According to Wiki, it was up against CSI:NY.

It was the whole hurricane theme only weeks after Katrina hit. Much of the country was tired of it.
There were also 2 other similar programs that split the scifi fans. Threshold and Surface.
