Do you think Ted loved Robin or Tracy more?

It is implied that before he meets Tracy, he hasn't met "the one" yet. Klaus's speech about "Lebenslanger-Schicksalsschatz" and how Ted hasn't met her yet if he has to think about the answer imply that at that time, he hadn't met the one he truly, truly would love, which implies that that only happens when he meets the mother and thus he loves the mother more than he ever loved Robin.

But if he loved the mother more, why is ending up with Robin a happy ending? The one he really loved died and he's basically having to settle for second place because she's still alive.

I just really like the alternate ending more. It makes so much more sense. It isn't an AMAZING ending to the show, but at least it finishes the story off in a way that doesn't make me feel like the entire time I was watching it was a waste.

In my mind, Tracey was The One, but he and Robin have moved forward enough that they are able to be together now, and fit together enough to be a loving couple, but Ted may still view Tracey as The One, and Robin is Almost The One (though Ted might be The One for Robin). Robin is basically someone who Ted can love, and spend his time with rather than just be lonely, but it's supposed to be something nicer than just "who he's settling for". Basically, she's just short of being The One he can move on from The One to her, even though she's not The One.

It's hard to explain, but I want to say Robin was almost The One, but I want to say it nicer than just "she was second best".

I think Ted and Tracy were each other's one

And I think Barney and Robin were each other's one as well.

But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again.

Something I've learned over the years is that how you love each person is different. Sometimes it's not more or less, it's just different.

I was actually in support of Robin and Ted as endgame by death or divorce until about Season 7, when the writers kept beating us over the head with 'Robin and Barney 4eva.' The writers took the characters in a direction that no longer fit the story's proposed ending. I'm disappointed with the way those final seasons played out, and the final episode literally crammed almost 20 years of retcon into a few minutes. That montage should have been the whole of Season 9's flashes.

reply

I agree that it's ridiculous that they made the entire season up until the finale take place over the course of three days, and then the final two episodes crammed 17 years in. They really should have played that out better. And they should have had an ending like the alternate ending, but much better - it was pretty clear to me that that alternate ending was just kind of slammed together after they saw how many people hated the ending as it aired. They didn't even have any new scenes, just the same montage but now with a Bob Saget voice over instead of Josh Radnor, and the last bit with the kids cut out.

I thought the same thing. Season 8 should of ended with Barney and Robin's wedding, season 9 could of been what happened in the last two episodes.

It was frustrating waiting 8 basically 9 seasons for Ted to me the mother of his kids, and she is killed off right after he meets her.

I don't think I can comment on who he loved more. Because, the head-in-the-clouds romantic that he is, he loved both of them passionately.

When Ted met Tracy, he fell in love with her. Before that, for the entire time, he was in love with Robin. So, to paraphrase Ted, there are top two and they are Robin & Tracy.

reply

I think he loved them both.

The whole point of the show is growing up and moving past looking for the fairy tail and "the one". You also have to look for someone you can truly build a life with.

Robin was Ted's Lebenslanger-Schicksalsschatz. While they were great together, love just wasn't enough. They wanted different things and couldn't build a life together, until life moved on and changed.

It may seem like Tracy was the consolation prize. However, if she had lived, I firmly believe she and Ted would have happily grown old together enjoying their children and grandchildren. That was in fact the plan.

Life happened though, and so you have Robin and Ted's story. That doesn't make his time with Tracy any less meaningful or special however.

Based on how the show ended. He settled for the mother. Because he could not get Robin.

I don't think anyone could stay with someone for 11yrs, then not date anyone for 6 years after they die for a person you just settle for

reply

I think Ted could. Once Robin wasn't traveling as much and his kids were old enough to manipulate.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

Hmm... I think Tracy was the One for Ted. Robin wasn't the best match for him at that time and place but he could see there was future there, which they got later in life.

reply

That's a good point. They would've been right for each other only later on in life. Not at the moment they were together...

Nobody promised you a happy ending though. That´s your expectations.

Why should it be a waste just cause it didn´t end in happily ever after?
