MovieChat Forums > How I Met Your Mother (2005) Discussion > Is "HIMYM" truly a "deader than disco" t...

I kinda have to agree, friends to this day, even tho it ended over 10 years ago, people still talk about it and love it. Himym is never talked about and it only ended 2 years ago. I blame the ending tho.

First off, disco never really died. I remember seeing at least one "Disco is dead" joke when I was a kid in the 90s, and it made no sense to me, because I knew that discos were still on the go.

And no, because everything has its share of fans and no show ever truly dies, because there's always going to be someone interested in it, and there's always going to be new fans. Also people do still talk about it, because we are. I really enjoy talking about How I Met Your Mother, because I love it so much.

Also, if my sitcom gets produced, it will mention How I Met Your Mother at least a fair amount (enough to acknowledge that the show is inspired by it, and establish that at least the main character is a fan), if that counts.

Well I know I watch it regularly from netflix. Friends was mentioned here but understandably it was from a time we (in my country) had like 4 television channels. Everyone was bound to see it at some point.

reply

Lol. There was more than 4 channels but true enough

No it just has the unfortunate status of being constantly compared to friends (due to their similarities) so it just looks that way. The fact is this is what happens to 99% of TV shows, they just kind of fade out a couple months after ending. Friends was just huge and gets tons of syndication and memes still.

It's a shame that it still has to be compared to Friends, or rather, it's a shame that it has to be compared negatively to Friends - why can't we just see that some jokes are bound to be similar, and assume that the "too similar" ones are just the writers being inspired by Friends, the same way everyone (including the writers of Friends) are inspired by someone else, and will lovingly "copy" them at times.

I never really liked Friends. HIMYM is a classic in my opinion. However, the ending sucked majorly. I'll just ignore the final season from now on lol.

HIMYM is a classic

I'm sorry, but it isn't. Friends is, though.

reply

I'm sorry, but you aren't the official judge on that. Also it's pretty rude to fake apologize like that then state your opinion as fact.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

Not simply my opinion. But, uhm, Moonlighty, we both know you're not one who should call others rude. Besides, the other poster was rude for unnecessarily bringing up Friends, especially since it's HIMYM fans who don't like any comparisons.

reply

I'm a How I Met Your Mother fan and a Friends fan and I'm okay with comparisons, if they are done positively (i.e. no "HIMYM ripped off Friends" nonsense, but simply pleasantly pointing out similarities, or wondering if the writers of HIMYM were inspired by Friends)

I am sure the reason How I Met Your Mother fans are bitter about the Friends comparisons (if they are) is that people accuse How I Met Your Mother of being a rip off of Friends, often based on very flimsy comparisons.

I love How I Met Your Mother more, but I'll always love Friends as well.
