My personal opinion is that this was NOT a clue for anything back when it aired. When the show started, the only story that Bays & Thomas had in the back of their minds was that the mother would die and Ted would end up with Robin. Since the mother's name was not revealed until the finale, it was a useless clue anyway.

There was also a character named Tracy in the "Milk" episode. If the name Tracy was previously determined, Barney's secretary would have had a different character name.

My guess is that the mother's name was not chosen until the final season. When Bays & Thomas revealed their plan for an ending, one of the writers went through all the red-herrings that had been thrown out during the years and picked one. Since Thomas and Bays had some lame-ass excuse for their red herrings, they could have simply ignored that episode. After all, Ted already admitted the story was a whopper.

Now, if Cristin Milioti had played Tracy in that episode, you would have a valid argument. But she did not. Or if Katie A. Keane had been chosen to play the mother in the final season, you would have a valid argument. But she did not

Since Carter and Bays had some lame-ass excuse for their red herrings, they could have simply ignored that episode.
Carter and Bays are the same person.

I think some people theorised that The Mother's name must be Tracey because the kids fell for it, so Carter Bays and Craig Thomas could have given fan theory homage by allowing that to be her name.

In hindsight, the jokes about The Mother seem misplaced because of the ending (and I am not one of the people who think Ted never loved Tracey).

Carter and Bays are the same person.
I caught that about an hour after I posted it, but only corrected two out of three.

I stupidly didn't realize you had it correct the previous two times. Sorry about that.

I think it was definitely a clue. If they hadn't chosen the name of the mother in season 1 to be Tracy then the joke with the stripper and the subsequent response of the children wouldn't have made sense. Also: why wouldn't the creators have thought of a name for the mother at that point? It isn't a massive challenge and they knew that they were going to reveal her at some point in time.

Since the mother's name was not revealed until the finale, it was a useless clue anyway.

The whole point of it being a clue is that they are giving you an indication beforehand. Giving someone a clue about something that has already been revealed isn't a clue.

Just saw the episode (rewatching the show) and thought the same.
I think it was no accident since the name was Tracy AND especially because he said "... and THAT'S how I met your mother." Not to forget the kids' shock.
All IMO pretty clear signs that was on purpose.
As a screenwriter myself I KNOW that when you pitch a show to a production company or network they want to know the arch of the first season, an overall arch and what happens in the final season (that's usually part of the "show bible") so I'm fairly sure they knew the name long before the show was even on air.
