I just saw the entire first season. I think the first season had some poor and lazy writing. Every episode had the same story structure, one ghost that needed help per episode.

And the show is all about Jennifer, the other characters have almost nothing interesting to do or say. Andrea was a total waste, she was just there to keep the store open while Melinda was away. And the husband, he's just there so Melinda can wear a sexy night gown during a making out or cuddling scene.

Season 2 appears to improve, less ghost-of-the-week and there appears to be a bigger story going on.

So what that "every episode had the same story structure", that's the point of the show!

CSI: A crime occurs. They gather evidence. They find the perp and figure out why he/she did it.

Columbo: We see the crime committed. Columbo starts investigating. Says "oh wait, just one more thing....". Columbo solves the crime and sometimes gets the star to confess.

Gilligan's Island: The castaways find a way to get off the island. Gilligan ruins the plan.

There are countless other examples of shows using a template for a plot !

reply

Yeah, it's called a procedural, idiot.

The early seasons can be very emotional especially the ones that deal with children such as The Lost Boys. The show went down hill at season 4.

I just started watching it myself. I have only watched the first 5 episodes. I unfortunately was spoiled by a friend of Melinda's husband Jim dying. I am pretty far away I think from when that happened. Funny, it seems they kept him on as a ghost through out the rest of the series after he died.

Yeah, you’ll see. I think the ratings were slipping and that was their Hail Mary but that’s when they lost me.

I agree with the poster above who complained about the template. Sure other shows have formats but somehow they’re able to pull it off whereas GW didn’t imo. It was always: weird stuff is happening, Melinda talks about it with her ever attentive husband, she investigates, gets info while posing as someone or something, comes clean about her “gift”, gets yelled at by the departed loved ones, continues to get answers, experiences a life or death hallucination in 5 inch heels, finds out someone she thought was bad is good, solves the ghost problem, tells the loved ones things she couldn’t possibly know unless she was in fact a ghost whisperer, communicates the departed’s reasons for staying behind on the earthly plane to the loved ones but never word for word, helps them go into the light while weeping with a totally relaxed face while an emo song plays, end of show.

No. He takes over another guy’s body.

sistik was my old imdb handle and to update those who are interested, I'm up to episode 5 currently. Still sad.

reply

lol were you able to get passed half the season yet?

reply

Not yet. With all the breaks I have to take for crying, it doesn't go as fast as I would like. I am roughly estimating that I should get to episode 12 sometime between April and September of 2026.

Jay Mohr provides the comedy relief.
