'Fraiser' was named after the lead and that happens to be the most succesful spin-off from a sitcom ever...

Well every talk show ("Oprah", "Dr. Phil", "The Bonnie Hunt Show", "The Wendy Williams Show" "Ricki Lake", "Donohue", "The Phil Donohue Show", "Maury", "The Maury Povich Show", "The Megan Mullally Show").

To the post two above me, the lead actor's name in "My Name is Earl" is Jason Lee so that doesn't count.

I'm racking my brain for more instances and I know there are some, I am just having a hard time thinking of non-talk show ones. It's popular in the news "Larry King Live", "Hannity & Colmes", "Hannity", "Nancy Grace"...

"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was VERY successful.

It mainly happens because the actor's character name is the actor's name, as in "Ellen", "Mary Tyler Moore" and so on. For instance, Faith on "Hope and Faith"'s real name is Faith, but Kelly Ripa's character is named Hope.

Bad omen? hmmm
ROSANNE
COSBY Show
FRASIER
Everybody loves RAYMOND
CHARLIE'S Angels
DEXTER
iCARLY
HANNAH MONTANA
Thats so RAVEN
SABRINA
DREW CARREY
SIMPSONS (kinda)
HOUSE
BUFFY
Ugly BETTY
I love LUCY
My name is EARL
VERONICA MARS
GREY'S Anatomy
MONK
ANGEL
MCGYVER
GEORGE LOPEZ
COLUMBO
GILLIGAN'S Island
SCOOBY DOO
Judging AMY
ALF
BECKER
ALICE
Terminator: SARAH CONNOR chronicles
ANDY GRIFFITH
ELLEN
SYBIL
REBA

(I know they are named after the characters mostly, but the ones named after the actors are because the character in the show has the same name as the actor so its really named after the character)

and there are quite a few more, all having been or still are big successes, yes there are some failures, like Freddie, Joey, Chuck (unfortunatly), and a few more, but it really isnt a bad omen, it just depends on how the show goes over. Freddie failed because at the time, Drama's were getting big (Supernatural, Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Numb3rs, Grey's, Bones, Weeds,THS invesigates), Chuck failed because alot of things were being cancelled recently and alot of reality TV was taking over, Joey failed... well because it kinda sucked =/

You could also add Felicity, and Dawson's Creek to your list, but i don't think those kind of show are what the op was talking about!

Also there's Ellen. Was that a sitcom? I've never seen it?
