Why didn't the family have a last name?

We all know what it is.

I noticed that too. Every time they would say their name like if Chris was going to give a speech or something they would call him simply "Chris", no last name. I saw that in the Election episode, the principal said Joey Caruso, first and last name, and Chris, no Rock!

Actually I don't quite think so. I know most people assume their last name is Rock but in actuality the show was only loosely based on Rock's childhood. In real life he had four brothers and no sisters and his mother was a teacher(with a different name than in the show). But mostly, the timeline is completely different than in this show. In real life Chris Rock was born in the 60s and dropped out high school around 1981. Whereas in this show, he's just a little kid in the early 80s. The time line is very different from real life. Hell Rock entered high school in the late 70s but in this show he first goes to high school around the mid 80s.

That's a whole different topic, and isn't related to why they never mentioned their last name. True facts about the Chris Rock and the show, but not really related.

Actually, they did say his last name:

In the episode "Everybody hates my man", in the end, when Chris is forced to play football and gets tackled by the other player, the announcer says "Rock broken up by number 72":

They mention his last name on the episode "Everybody hates boxing" At the end of the episode his boxing coach mentions his last name while Chris is getting beat up. You can hear his coach yelled, Rock move out of the way.

In the episode where Chris gets his driver's license, we see a close up of his photo and signature saying "Chris R" written in cursive.
