Should have dropped the mother character.

I know it was loosely based on Rock's younger life but the mother was so annoying, so unfair, so infuriating that when she came on i had to either turn the volume down or turn the show off altogether.

Here is a women who complains constantly and berates a man who works two jobs to look after his wife and kids and asks nothing for himself and gets mad as hell when he challenges her for jacking in yet another easy office job.

If this character was removed it would have brought a better atmosphere to the show. It would also have changed the dynamic as Chris would have had to start growing up in another way, taking care of his sister and brother when his dad was working.

I think it would have been much better for the show.

So what should have happened to her? She died? They got divorced? She ran off? That would have been hilarious, huh?

It would be irresponsible two leave three children unsupervised for most of the day. Chris was still a child. We saw what happened when Chris was left alone with his siblings. He snuck out to go somewhere and got in trouble.

Also, it would be a tremendous disrespect to Chris Rock's real mother if his mother didn't exist on the show. He probably wasn't willing to do that for you.

Rochelle was very loud and opiniated and rude. She definitely wasn't an ideal character, by any means. But I don't think they should of wrote her character off. She played an important role. She WAS a loving mother and cared for her kids, she just was loud about her opinions. She loved her husband, she just wanted to have someone to listen to her.

I think that the show would of been boring without her character. Everybody has personality traits, not all of them are good. But that is what makes people unique. She had very prominate traits, but thats what made her stand out. And it worked very well for her. Sure, there were things that she could of done to be a better character. But she loved her family and always tried to keep them happy and cared for.

That's surprising. I love Tichina Arnold's character on this show. I grew up with loud, opinionated women, so maybe that's why I find her endearing.

Rochelle is just like any other black mother I grew up around. They all were big personalities. My mother was like Rochelle in how she could be loud and boisterious but then wanted to look down on people for doing it too.

I agree with this, except that I'm going to expand it to the fact that she was just like any poor mother living in a "questionable" neighborhood who wants more for her children than what she has. My mom is white, and the mom is this show reminds me a lot of her.

Rochelle may be loud and obnoxious, but she was a black woman who grew up in America before the 1970s. She broke out of what was the social norm for black women back then, and she didn't do it by sitting down and shutting up. It's because of loud, obnoxious people like her that blacks and women have the rights they do today. This mother is one of the most respectable people I've ever seen on TV. The reason that she is so respectable is that she is realistic. If she didn't have all of these flaws that you hate so much, then she would have been disgustingly unrealistic and impossible to relate with.

If every character on TV shows was nice and quiet, they would be boring like family sitcoms were in the 50's and 60's. Leave It to Beaver was a nice show but the mother was so perfect she was boring. Having characters be imperfect and overcome major obstacles is what makes stories interesting.

this show would be boring without Rochelle; she's hilarious to me

my name is not Chloe!

The addams family was also from the time period you mentioned.

reply

But if the show is based on Chris' life and Chris' mother was part of his life, then it wouldn't be his life anymore, right?

reply

Sometimes I always wondered what could have happened had the show returned for a 5th season and had Julius and Rochelle sepearate temporary due to Rochelle's constant whinnying.

reply

Yeah, and if only Chris Rocks parents had split up in real life. He probably never would have had the courage and support(if you weren't so critical of Rochelle, you may have seen the many moments when she was caring, supportive, loving, and protective of her family.) to become a comedian and instead would have ended up working two jobs, and living the same life as his parents because his dad would have expected him to start working as soon as he was able (which he was already doing at Doc's)

OP.. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR DAMNNNN MIND??? Rochelle made this show! I laugh nearly every time she comes onto the scene (especially when shes in a pissed off mood, which is nearly every time LOL). But hey, thats your opinion so I'm not going to belittle you because of your opinion.

We can DO IT ALLLL DAY LONG, (We'll have to pay more for the light bill if we do it at night!)

reply

Good idea. Drop the character just because the OP doesn't like her. The OPs opinion really effects the shows outcome like that.

/OP.. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR DAMNNNN MIND??? Rochelle made this show!\
Exactly! It's such a brilliant cast and Rochelle steals this show in almost every episode. Tichina is such a great comedic actress, I laugh at her delivery almost all the time. This show would be lacking big time without her. What a stupid original post, reeks of trolliness.

reply

no..cuz like someone said that would have been an insult to chris's real mother..and rochelle's personality is also exaggerated which is part of the the comedy of the show. It's not that serious..it's just a show..chill out..

reply

Regardless of her unlikeable character, the woman is a great actress.

I grew up around women like that. The Rochelle character was so much like women in my family. My mother was more quiet but she had her Rochelle moments. I think every black child knows at least one Rochelle. Plus I loved Tichina on Martin. She's hilarious. Yeah there were times she got on my nerves but Chris' family was not perfect so it needed not be displayed as such. This was one of that last good black sitcoms.

reply

I loved her on that show!
