Why is the mom the dominant one

Like so many other shows out there the wife seems to be the competent confident one who knows exactly what she's doing and the husband is aloof, and socially or emotionally illiterate.

Why do we keep seeing this in modern television?

I expected this show to have some strong black male leads. Does it?

You make some great points he is in deed good to his family. I suppose when we consider what is generally purported of black men in regards to their absence or abandonment of their families Julius by comparison would seem like a Superman. However, I think all the things that you describe our automatic and they come with the territory of fatherhood and just being a functional parent/husband.

I just felt his character was a bit submissive. For all intents and purposes he's another one of the children in terms of his relationship with Rochelle, as they all seem to walk on eggshells to keep from pissing her off.

"as they all seem to walk on eggshells to keep from pissing her off."

What kind of upbringing did you have? I and every person the subject has came up with has/had to ealk on eggshells around their mother/wife/girlfriend to keep from pissing them off and im sure women have to do the same things to different extents.

what kind of household did YOU grow up in? i for one didn't have to walk on egg sells or else be threaten with a beating. that's not normal.

i've got feelings too, ya know - inbetweeners

I personally wouldnt find that very normal at all, I see my upbringing as fairly traditional, father went to work to earn money mother stayed at home as the matriarch, raised the children and ruled with an iron fist, you did something wrong you got smacked, she was in a foul mood you stayed out the way. Although not the way things work in my household it was probably more normal than anything else.

kids shouldn't be smacked. just yell at them and take away their things

I got my ass beat as a child, sometimes I deserved it, other times I got into trouble because of my little sister (I'm the oldest). I'm ASSUMING it depends on WHERE you grew up. My mother is Hispanic, lots of Hispanic (and African American) mothers spanked their children as discipline...ESPECIALLY in cities like NYC. I was born and raised in NYC and I had friends (of Hispanic/African American origin) that got spanked by their mothers (and fathers) as a form of discipline. Nowadays, I see kids getting time outs and a stern talking to but spanking went out the window. Rochelle as a mother is exactly what I grew up with. The only difference was it was just my sister and I and my parents were divorced.

There was one ep. That indicates that the house would fall apart if Rochelle wasn't tough on everyone.

-She tried not yelling, and it turns out the everyone walks all over her when she isn't dominant.

- it's also stated when she tries selling makeup to the other women and no one was listening to her and walking out until she told when to listen and sit down in an assertive manner.

- oh and in the funeral episode when her mother was being a pain and she eventually couldn't take it anymore

Well in Rochelle's case, she probably feels she has to be that way due to personal experiences. Her mom is judgemental and controlling hense where she got it from.

- In one episode, she tried the "not yelling" thing but failed when everyone in the house started taking advantage or her and the kids were ignoring her. (Tonya eating ice cream before dinner and Drew spray painting on the table.)
