ABC Defends Cancellation of Show

PASADENA, Calif. -

One minute, Heather Graham was the face of ABC. The next minute, she was gone. Her comedy series "Emily's Reasons Why Not" was promoted relentlessly by the network as the linchpin of its post-football Monday night schedule, but was only given one airing before being yanked earlier this month.

ABC committed to the big promotional campaign before even seeing a script for the show, said ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson on Saturday. The series turned out to be a dog creatively, he indicated.

"Once we saw it was not launching, we felt like unfortunately it was not going to get better and we had to make a change," McPherson said.

A total of six episodes were filmed, and McPherson said no determination has been made about whether they would be burned off.

The quick hook doesn't mean producers of other ABC series with middling ratings — "Invasion," for example — should be shaking in fear.

"That's a great example for us of when to be patient and when to fold them," he said. "We believe in that show."

Ouch.

This is why you wait to see a pilot before committing to a show. It's not rocket science. I should have McPherson's job.

ABC employed an unusually quick hook with its midseason comedy "Emily's Reasons Why Not," pulling the plug after just one week. Yet to hear programming chief Steve McPherson tell it, the decision wasn't impulsive.

"Creatively we just did not get the show where it needed to be," McPherson told reporters Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Television Critics Association press tour. "All of us tried really hard -- producers, network, studio -- but it just never got on track."

"Emily's Reasons," which stars Heather Graham as a self-help publisher with a poor romantic track record, drew about 6.2 million viewers to its Jan. 9 premiere. ABC pulled the show after that and has shut down production after six episodes.

The move was partly based on the fact that competition in its Monday-night timeslot was about to increase with the return of "24" to FOX. McPherson also says "we needed to make a quick change" to protect "The Bachelor," which he believes has the potential to grow its audience for the remainder of its run.

"You have to kind of measure your patience based on how you believe in the creative, and there we felt like, unfortunately, it was not going to get better," he says.

"Emily's" Monday companion, "Jake in Progress," also was pulled after one week, but McPherson holds out hope that he'll be able to bring the show back later in the season. "I have a crush on John Stamos," he jokes about "Jake's" star.

"You know what? I really believe in that show," McPherson says. "It's the tough thing about this business. You've got to go with your gut and just love the stuff you do and be passionate about it, and try to find a place for it to work.

"At some point, obviously, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. But we still would really like to try to find a place for it to give it one more last shot. If it doesn't go there, so be it."

Just when that might be, McPherson isn't saying. He says he's waiting to see how other networks schedule the remainder of their midseason shows -- presumably, after the Winter Olympics end in late February -- before he makes announcements for ABC.

In addition to the possible return of "Jake in Progress," ABC also has veteran comedy "Less Than Perfect" in reserve, along with new shows "Sons & Daughters," "What About Brian," "The Evidence" and "The Miracle Workers."

McPherson & ABC are completely clueless. How pathetic is it that he says he has a crush on John Stamos who got dumped by Rebecca Romijn for being so boring? Hasn't Jake in Progress been cancelled twice now?

I guess he already saw 2 or 3 more episodes of Emily and they might
doesn't look funny anyway - even in the next 5 or 6 scripts.

I mean, just look at the starter/pilots of some other "funny"
shows like "My Name Is Earl" or "Two Men and Half Men" - they
are simply hilarious. You can see where they can go and what
you can do in "their" universe. It's "working".

After the pilot of Emily, I thought: "My gosh! What crap!".
That way-to-comical asian chick and this pathetic gay guy,
the plot seemed to be written "plotgenerator V0.1" written
by some newbie programmer from india...

Heather is a godess! I would say "just give her 2-3 seasons
and change the scripts to play on hawaii, so she must run around
in bikinis all day long". (ok I stop gushing)

But this show simply doesn't cut it. There is only three ways
to get Girls watching shows: a) hot guys b) girls living through
their (lousy) lives meeting guys c) something about "marriage".

"Emily" was b) and it failed that way. Stamos runs in a) and
"The Bachelor" on c). It quite logical for the ABC-Powers.

[And that note getting dumped by Rebecca: the yellow press made
some gross story out of it. They really tried to get back together.

Sorry, but Emily didn't do it. ABC rise to power in the TV market
came from their new mentality of letting big boys like J.J.Abrahams
play with way-off ideas; and small boys like Marc Cherry producing
their longplanned ideas about some strange Housewives.

Heather should get back to the drawing board and tried it again.

ABC should combine Jake in Progress with Emily's Reasons Why Not and call it "Jake in Emily". I would totally watch that.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! You totally took the words right out of my mouth! Well, not really a "porn" idea, but.....when I saw those two previews on tv, I thought to myself, eventually, they should get Emily and Jake together and they would live "happliy ever after", lol!!!!!

I saw the the pilot for ERWN and I have to tell you I have seen alot worse writing. Believe me. I think that unlike MANY other sitcoms and hour long dramas cancelled this season ABC should had some balls, taken a chance on this show and stuck to its guns. Maybe if it had a chance to develop it could have been better and gained good ratings. I'm sick of seeing new shows promoted heavily pre airing and then disappearing. It's pathetic. Especially after I start to get into them. I really don't think qualified people are running television networks anymore. We have to go back to a time when the audience mattered instead of just the sponsors panicking. This rash protocol is destroying television. Besides I would rather drink my own urine then watch that should have been cancelled two years ago, piece of dog s**t The Bachelor, in addition to all the other reality programs on ABC. Please someone agree with me!

I'm glad this show is cancelled, but a bad pilot doesn't mean a bad show and vice versa. Just remember Seinfeld's pilot, The Seinfeld Chronicles. It was horrible.
