Cancelled

ABC cancelled the TV show after one episode.

THAT'S GOOD!! I hate these tired cliche'd shows about single, commitment phobic, self absorbed creeps. I destest those people in real life, they don't need their own TV shows too. Now we just need to get rid of "Jake in Progress,"....."Love Monkey" and "Courting Alex,".....same stupid theme.

Heather Graham is hotter than the sun. Don't care about the plot, don't care about orginality (face it there is little left on tv or in hollywood, everything is a copy of something else latley, even the good ones like Curb)

reply

Not really suprising. Network's will plug TV shows to the nines, only to cancel them quickly. ERWN now joins an elite group that features such "standouts" as South of Sunset, which was cancelled after one episode (However, all remaining episodes were shown on VH1).

This sucks. I was looking forward to it tonight.

reply

i dont think just because heather graham is hot (although i agree with you there) is a good enough reason to do another tired sitcom about dating. we need some new ideas!!

reply

At least there wasn't a laugh track in this show...Its so outdated...I would much rather see shows like 2 and a half men and Yes Dear cancelled...They're not clever, creative, or funny...I guess it shows that a large portion of the population responds to boring crap instead of intelligent writing.

reply

Some people have to describe what they mean by "intelligent writing". I find it funny that if one likes a show but it is cancelled, it is because most don't get or don't appreciate "intelligent writing."

What is intelligent writing? Please, describe it, because I've seen several posts about how stupid the writing for this show was, but then there is you, who says it was cancelled because it WAS intelligent and people - dumb Americans in the mid-west, I assume you mean - couldn't get it.

Define it. What is intelligent sit-com writing?

And remember, just because you liked it, doesn't make it intelligent. Sometimes that just makes it something you liked.

reply

eh....same thing happened to shasta mcnasty back in the day. Promoted the hell out of it, and it only lasted a few episodes

reply

wow

Blake & Paige from Season 2 of TAR are my favorite team of all time!

reply

That is blockbuster news. Tomorrow, there will still be advertisements of this program on billboards, buses, subways, etc, and yet it is off the air. Hilarious!

And a previous poster made a great point about shows like this. I am fed up with shows about such awful people as well. I only loved it when Seinfeld followed that path, because it was funny, and eventually those characters got what they deserved in the end. I hated Sex and the City, I hate Desparate Housewives, and shows of that ilk, and these shows need to go for the greater good of the viewers. We are in a time that as Americans, we need to show solidarity, and present an unselfish attitude. Shows like this one, the two shows I mentioned, and even many characters of current day TV programs detract from society.

reply

get off your high horse you prat. you know what i hate? high and mighty people like you!

"get off your high horse you prat. you know what i hate? high and mighty people like you!"

Pipe down kentatm. My comments weren't that bad. Can you please wait until someone makes a comment about your friends or family until you fly of the handle?

Anyway, as for some good shows, I just named one. Seinfeld. There are also plenty of shows from the 70's and 80's that were intellectually stimulating, and genuinely funny (Moonlighting, Growing Pains, The Cosby Show, Cheers, The Jeffersons, All in the Family, etc...). There were some other shows that presented the single, working woman in a way that the average viewer can respect (one such show that was excellent was The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd). Why NBC canned it is beyond me. Many modern day shows, seem formulaic, uninspired, and boring.

reply

My goodness, the perfect example of what's wrong with tv is the continual deification of Seinfeld as a great tv show:
1. The characters are always shouting
2. They're always desperate

Other than the fact that a few shows were truly original, e.g., Master of Domain, Not that there's anything wrong with it, and maybe one or two others.

That show was so odious I was barely able to watch three complete episodes. The other times I watched it, I was usually unable to stand it to the first commercial break. And ERWN is horrible? It's certainly no worse than Seinfeld in my opinion, and certainly never had a chance to prove whether it would grow into something good, or just remain another mundane sitcom.

Please, please, please don't continue to cite Seinfeld as something worth emulating.

reply

What TV shows would you recommend? Please explain in detail the detract from society comment.

Well, "Sex And The City" and "Desperate Housewives" are written by jaded, urban gay men whose values and life experiences are radically different from the average Americans who do not share their brutal cynicism or campy sense of humor.

DW does well (which SATC could never have done outside of cable) mostly because it has several very attractive women and is less aggressively vulgar, while SATC only had one remotely attractive woman and was unrestrained in its vulgarity. The average American guy appreciates hot chicks, which gives the show a male demographic SATC never had.

Now, I watched the sole broadcast episode of ERWN because Heather Graham is a lovely-looking woman - however 5 minutes in I decided to change the channel because it was horribly written and Graham cannot carry a show as an actress.

She was a great guest star on "Scrubs" and she would have made an excellent recurring character. But she just doesn't have the raw comedic talent to carry a show and the show's premise was contrived and overdone.

I'm sure Miss Graham's pride as a movie actress prevents her from even considering a regular role on any TV show in which she is not the headliner, but in a few years that will change. She would make a great ensemble player in a TV show just as she has in movies.

If you're a straight man and you didn't love this show you're just kidding yourself that you're straight...

reply

Why would I love this show? Heather Graham is more appealing to most guys as "Rollergirl" than she is as a fully-clothed comic lead.

For a comic lead I would take the less-hot-but-still-hot Sarah Chalke from "Scrubs" - now she's funny.

reply

I didn't think the show was great, but good grief. The network spent, what, half a billion on hyping this? They could AT LEAST air all the shows that were made. They likely paid for them anyway? That's just stupid business practice... especially in a time when re-runs are kicking in!

Gees ABC...at least be sensible! Air what was made after February sweeps, let people mildly enjoy them, then send it on its way if it isn't "launching." There have been FEW shows that I have "loved" on the first airing. I didn't like "My Name is Earl" or "Scrubs" or "The Office" at least until the 5th or 6th episode.

The idea that all viewers are so fickle and mindless that we must instantly love a show the first minute it is on the air is insulting--whether or not you like this particular show or not.

I know, I agree

That's why I don't watch local TV (besides sports). The companies program what they want you to see. Well I wanted to see Heather Graham and they took my dream away, dammit!!!

This is why I hardly ever watch network TV shows. All of them are quick to push the panic button therefore none of us are given a chance to watch to show grow. Gone are the days of Cheers when the network gave it a chance even though the ratings were low.

If a show lasts a year I may watch it. I know many people feel the same way.

reply

Well, I never even got to see the show, but after all the hype, I really was "hyped up" about it. I ended up not being home that evening. I thought the previews looked cute. I am an average American mom who needs a little "escapism" sometimes! So, reality and "intelligence" are not always completely necessary and "cliches" are pretty much expected. How many new ideas can we come up with, anyway? Everything's been done! I'm bummed I didn't get to see it.

Are you honestly saying that? Did you know most of SATC's writers were actually female, and there is such a thing as New York Society Elite. And women do speak that way (not so much as Sam, though). But who knew that sex was "aggressively vulgar". I think someone needs to get laid more often.

The show also had a sharp wit to it, which kept it on the air for however long.
DW used to have that in the first season, but it isn't there anymore (and I'm not quite the fan of the show anymore). Susan is the most annoying character. She also needs to eat.

If Friends had debuted on Monday nights before Jake in Progress, Friends would have been cancelled after one episode, too.

reply

I hope Steve McPherson gets fired for pulling crap like this. Don't promote a damn show so much that you go and cancel it after one episode. Go cancel According To Jim, Miracle Workers, or Invasion.

reply

that's a shame. i've really liked the show, i thought it was funny.
And Heather, my God, she's hotter than hell.

reply

only got to see just one......interesting! the cute male assistant was too good to be true......
