Has Crumbs been cancelled?

Has Crumbs been cancelled? I set the VCR to tape the 2-16-06 episode, and when I watched it, there was a repeat of Grey's Anatomy.

The same thing happened for the 2-9-06 episode.

I hope it's not cancelled. I think the show is good, and has good potential -- Curtin and Devane are great!

Thanks in advance.

reply

I really don't know what's going on. I don't think it's cancelled though.

reply

I had the same, but what I've been reading on other blogs, is that the show is doing great! I have no idea when they will put the show on, either thursday or Tuesday slot, we'll have to see next week

reply

they have pulled the show for the time being, with no future air dates listed. Someone has started a petition to get it back on air at www.petitionspot.com I know it doesn't make any sense that they would pull it. I read something about it being the most watched ABC comedy on air.

reply

I saw on www.tv.com that the episode that was supposed to air on 2/16 (Tennis Any Crumb) is scheduled to air on 2/23.

reply

In other words the show is just on Hiatus just like Living With Fran was recently but Living With Fran is back again so Crumbs right now is on a temporary Hiatus until sometime in the future. Don't forget Oliver Beene. That show was on and off with 3 Hiatus's

ABC Quietly Sends 'Crumbs' to Hiatus
By Brian Ford Sullivan

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- "Crumbs's" two-week break has become a bit more permanent as scheduling updates released by ABC this afternoon confirm the series won't be returning to the network anytime soon.

The Alphabet announced today it will expand next week's broadcast of "Dancing With the Stars" (February 23) to two hours, while movies will fill the network's Thursday lineup on March 2 ("Sweet Home Alabama") and March 9 ("Bringing Down the House").

That, coupled with the previously announced two-hour launch of "American Inventor" on Thursday, March 16 and a special four-week run of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (entitled "After the Storm") due to start on Thursday, March 23, will keep ABC's Thursday schedule occupied for the foreseeable future.

The news comes in spite "Crumbs's" status as the network's most-watched comedy (10.76 million on average), more than 3.0 million viewers ahead of ABC's second most-watched half-hour, "The George Lopez Show" (7.70 million on average).

Nevertheless, the show's continued erosion of its "Stars" lead-in most likely lead to its hiatus. Its January 12 launch was seen by 11.81 million viewers and held 68.03% of said lead-in while its most-recent Thursday airing on February 2 drew 9.13 million viewers and fell to a 48.49% retention rate.

ABC's two Thursday "Grey's Anatomy" encores have fared slightly better, drawing 9.94 million on February 9 (49.80% retention of "Stars") and an estimated 9.4 million last night (48.96% retention of "Stars").

Outside of its regular Thursday, 9:30/8:30c slot, ABC offered up a special Tuesday installment of "Crumbs" on February 7. With the loss of its "Stars" lead-in, the broadcast not surprisingly hit a series low of 6.97 million viewers. To its credit however, it did hold 83.27% of its "According to Jim" lead-in (8.37 million).

In any case, it's not clear when the remaining eight installments from its 13-episode order will air. Marco Pennette, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola are the executive producers of the series, a co-production of Touchstone Television and Tollin/Robbins Productions.

Meanwhile in other ABC news, the network remains mum on what will permanently fill the Friday, 8:00/7:00c hour once "Stars" wraps its run. For now, a mix of new and repeat episodes of "America's Funniest Home Videos" will kick off the Alphabet's Friday schedule on February 24, March 3 and March 10

It's doing pretty well which makes you wonder why they would this. This is what's gonna get the show cancelled. I guess they haven't learned anything from past mistakes.

reply

... especially since it's "the network's most-watched comedy". You would think any network would hang on to anything that's "the most watched" with tight fists.

I rather liked it, even though I only saw 2 shows.

reply

Totally doesn't make sense. It takes time to build an audience. I must admit the first couple of shows I struggled getting into it, but still there's something I liked about it and kept watching. And the last one I saw, it was all coming together for me. I was really starting to enjoy it!!

Most shows it take me time to get hooked. There's always the time of sorting out who everyone is, and what they're all about, and when I finally did they take off the show.

I've e-mailed the network through the contact form on ABC.com, but apparently it's a waste of time.

ABC is starting to schedule like NBC did before it's downfall. Shows take time to develop an audience, but in today's business environment they don't do that. I got to the point I was excited about the show and ABC takes it off the air!! I MAY NEVER WATCH ANOTHER NEW ABC SHOW!!!

reply

Thanks for posting this link!!! I was confused that the show is not coming on yet AGAIN!

That blows!!!

I liked this show and I think all the people on it are great...it's such a shame to see a show that had potential AND that was the most watch comedy leave the air (What??). It doesn't make sense???

But, I will keep my fingers-crossed that the hiatus doesn't ruin things completely for "Crumbs" and I will also watch out for the remaining episodes of this season. If the show does get cancelled maybe they will air a least what they have filmed?

There's a good reason for them yanking the show -- it's February! Well, that's really not a good reason, but it's certainly not unusual. Because of the b.s. Neilsen ratings, new and low-rated shows are routinely jerked around for sweeps in Feb, May and November.

With their Tuesday night schedule being ratings-deprived, their Friday night comedies gone for the time being, and "Emily's Reasons Why Not" (which had potential) being canned after one airing (along with "Jake in Progress" which is off to hiatus-land), ABC certainly does seem to be taking after NBC's mistakes. Since "Crumbs" was getting strong ratings, I'd hoped that they'd give it a real chance -- at least it's consistantly funny, unlike "Freddie," a show which only has Bryan Austin Greene's shenanigans and one-liners going for it.

reply

I agree with everyone. This "hiatus" is ridiculous. Crumbs is a great show and getting good, promising ratings for a new comedy. Why are they pulling it out of the schedule? I even missed that Tuesday airing because I wasn't aware of the time change, and I am usually pretty up-to-date on TV scheduling. Are the networks TRYING to make us frusturated or something?

reply

^Same here, i missed that Tuesday airing because ABC just randomly decided to switch time slots for the week. Then i was looking forward to seeing it last Thursday and "Grey's Anatomy" was on instead. If this show is cancelled then i will be furious because if horrible shows like "According to Jim" get picked up season after season then "Crumbs" definitely deserves to stay on the air.

It makes absolutely no sense at all. Indeed, "Crumbs" was getting respectable ratings. In fact, they were very similiar to what "Grey's Anatomy" received in its two airings after "Dancing with the Stars." In fact, the second airing of "Grey's Anatomy" appeared to have lower ratings than any of the "Crumbs" episodes.

I don't think ABC is building for the long-haul. Instead, they're taking a page out of NBC's book and scheduling for the moment, then making snap decisions. I agree it's competitive out there in the TV world, but "Crumbs" was getting better ratings than any other sitcom ABC's aired on Thursday in years. Indeed, it had the luxury of "Dancing with the Stars" leading in, but it was holding the audience as well as the "Grey's Anatomy" rerun, if not better. Still, both shows had significant drop off from "Dancing with the Stars." I think that shows not the strength or weakness of "Grey's" and "Crumbs", but that "Dancing with the Stars" brings a different audience than would watch "Grey's" or "Crumbs". After all, "Grey's Anatomy" gets strong ratings on Sunday nights. Even its reruns do better on Sunday night than they did on Thursday.

The reason CBS is No. 1 is because CBS knows how to schedule series. It had "Close to Home" on Tuesdays and got horrible ratings. CBS moved it to Friday after "Ghost Whisperer" and now "Close to Home" gets respectable ratings. CBS knew that "Ghost Whisperer" and "Close to Home" were compatible, and CBS benefited from this smart move. I would much rather have a TV show on CBS than ABC or NBC. There is no sense to the decisions made by ABC or NBC. I think CBS considers the audience when making decisions. ABC and NBC make quick decisions without calculating their long-range impact. NBC was the No. 1 network just a couple of years ago and now it struggles to be No. 3. It's not because of the bad decisions NBC is making today, but it's because of the bad decisions NBC made a few years ago.

Well, I ramble on... but it appears ABC must have hired some former NBC executives. And ABC's current surge will not continue if it continues make more bad decisions, such as what they're doing with "Crumbs."

reply

You need a new hobby because you just spent way to much time talking about TV.

reply

that is a hobby, but it's fun to evaluate the moves by network executives who get paid the big bucks to make decisions to affect what we see on TV...

reply

I believe that its in hiatus for the Olympics coverage, plus since its February which is a sweeps month and networks always show movies or tv shows that will bring in high ratings, which equals money.

reply

I saw an advertisement for fox's new show called "loops" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371797/) and it stars Fred Savage. Does that mean Crumbs is gone for good?

reply

I went to that link and didn't see Fred Savage's name anywhere...

reply

Fred Savage is not starring in "The Loop", your obviously getting confused with someone else or from a very bad source.

for what it's worth, I recently read that Eddie McClintock has signed on for a new pilot in the fall on NBC, which doesnt look particularly good for Crumbs. However, the new pilot is second in line for Crumbs. This happened to Wendie Malick of Just Shoot Me, or more recently, Jake in Progress. She was tapped to star in a pilot and due to Jake's last minute pick-up, she had to leave the project.

I love this show i wish it was not cancelled it was like that one show a few years ago called the Big House on ABC lasted about 4 weeks and was done it was a great show

Why does ABC give low rated crap like Hope & Faith chance after chance after chance (that crap is going to be on Tuesdays after that turd According to Jim in a week or two), yet cancels a show that shows signs of being a quality program after three airings? The world may never know.

reply

Even though EdStevens criticized me for my TV ramblings, I'll still hop in to answer notwitty's question...

In the case of "Hope and Faith," it's getting a chance because it's getting close to syndication. ABC stands to gain more money if "Hope" is syndicated, so they'll leave it on just until they've made enough episodes so it can be syndicated and then they'll cancel it (they recently did that with "My Wife and Kids"). Of course, that doesn't explain why they're jacking with "Less Than Perfect," which will be about 3 episodes shy of being syndicated (it's yet to return to the schedule this season despite the fact that they've filmed 13 episodes).

"Crumbs" deserved a better shot than it's gotten, but with ABC's lack of support for sitcoms these days (while they tout crap like that horrible "Invasion" show) it's not surprising.

reply

Thank you, TelevisionJunkie.

I find ramblings about the ins-and-outs of the tv industry interesting.

reply

I wouldn't take it too personally. Steve McPherson (ABC's president of entertainment and hater of all ABC comedies that don't have "sons" and "daughters" somewhere in the title) has crapped on pretty much all of his network's sitcoms this year. If you think he's rolling out the red carpet for HOPE & FAITH... well... some of us feel differently. Up until a few weeks ago, there were rumors from an ABC "insider" that it would be on hiatus forever. One thing it's probably not going to be is syndicated. Maybe some cheap-paying cable deal, but 73 episodes tends to not be enough to interest local affiliates in a 5-day-a-week half-hour strip - and I've lost confidence that another season will happen.

reply

Whoah, my mistake. I guess since it remained on the schedule until January, I didn't check and just assumed that "Hope" was up for syndication at the end of this season. Oddly, it seems that there's more episodes of "Less Than Perfect" (81) than "Hope & Faith" (73) but both premiered at the same time (I think the latter first premiered a week before the former). Ah, poor Ted McGinley just can't get a show into syndication unless he hops into the cast after it's established.

As for "Sons & Daughters," I've now sat through two hours-worth of episodes. Seems like a toned-down, unfunny "Arrested Development"... The couple of scenes that were truly funny, they overkilled in promos. Of course, I didn't think that highly of "Arrested" to begin with, but (again, without checking ratings) I don't see too much of a future for "S&D".... and it makes me really miss "Crumbs" (and "Commander in Chief," which I never watched!).

reply

I think the producers and cast of Crumbs should take it to another network!

reply

Steve's preferential treatment of SONS & DAUGHTERS at the expense of comedies that the network actually - you know - owns has ticked off a lot of producers of the various hiatused ABC sitcoms. Of which I am one. I won't say which show it is (although you can narrow it down to four). All he has to do is read this, and he'll make it that much worse for us. Because we've had to fight just to get all the episodes we made on the air. But... what goes around comes around, and those are of us who are having trouble containing our jealousy consider it poetic justice that Mr. McPherson's favorite son (& daughter) scored a whopping 5 share on Tuesday.

LESS THAN PERFECT had a pretty good headstart on HOPE & FAITH. The season before!

reply

Yeah, I agree. Whatever show your from, I'm probably a fan of. ABC must hate GOOD comedies. They've kept "Hope & Faith" off for almost two months, screwed over "Crumbs", that'll probably never return, even though it was their hightest rating comedy, even more then their precious 'Jim'. "Less Than Perfect", will their 4th season even SEE the light? Don't forget Emily/Jake. 6 million viewers wasn't enough, even for a second week on air. However, Sons & Daughters gets a 2.4(?) share on their 9:30 show, and THAT'S still on. Ridicilous. I do want to shake your hand for admitting their special treatment toward "Sons & Daughters". Why? Because it's 'dark' comedy? Please. I'd take H&F/LTP/Crumbs over that garbage any day.

reply

I wish I could be more forthright, but I'd rather wait until we get canned to do that. And if we somehow get renewed, well, it's not in my best interest to bite the hand that feeds.

The word on the street is that LESS THAN PERFECT'S 13 episodes will be shown this summer, along with all the RODNEY leftovers. EMILY'S, JAKE'S and CRUMBS' unaired shows aren't expected to run. Probably no one expects them to, since they aren't even listed at abc.go.com/site/allshows.html anymore. Steve really stuck it to the guys over at JAKE, that's for sure. A lot of them had other offers lined up, and he renews it to keep John Stamos off of NBC, then pulls the plug one episode into its second season.

It was my understanding that EMILY had some serious production difficulties that led to its early demise. Certainly, it wasn't just the numbers. How could it have been? It got a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo. Same number MIRACLE WORKERS got this past week. Almost double what S&D scored the day after.

I feel the sorriest for RODNEY. Not only is it a very cost-effective show, but it's performed about as reasonably as can be expected, and gets jerked around constantly as thanks. And it's not even the one I work on...

reply

Yeah, for a while there, Rodney did pretty well, being Jim's lead out. Thanks for the word on LTP, I'll be looking forward to those episodes. They really DID stick it to Jake In Progress, I remember Stamos being offered the ER job. At least there's always the book for Emily's Reasons.

Hey, if you're still here, I got a question for you: What show seems to be ABC's favorite right now? Is it Grey's Anatomy? How do they feel about Lost's ratings slipping and the buzz on Housewives going down?

Thanks

reply

What's ABC's favorite right now? Not us!

I can't say that network heads ever have one clear-cut favorite - and if and when they do, they're certainly never going to admit it - but looking over the ABC promos and the amount of promos each show gets is usually a good clue as to which ones are liked and which ones aren't.

As for LOST, I haven't heard anything about that, but I would imagine they were expecting the numbers to drop some when AMERICAN IDOL entered the picture. And DH got a 20 share last night, so I don't think they'll be crying too much. Sex sells, of course, so should the numbers ever start to fall, all they'd need to do to make the buzz go up is have the housewives go down.

reply

Yeah, why I asked about Housewives is because the message boards/talk seems to be down for Housewives. Sure, people watch it, but it seems Grey's Anatomy is more of the favorite, and you hear a lot of "I like GA way more than DH" you know.

Yeah, since Idol results are on at 9PM, Lost's ratings obviously go down, but it goes down for any network. It seemed to help Freddie, those numbers went up, but it could've been for the Lopez/Freddie crossover. I like Freddie, but not a fan of G.Lopez.

Thanks for taking out time to talk here. It's always nice to get somebody who's honest here and tells the truth. I hope whatever show you work on, it works out for you. I'm sure I watch it, I always love the GOOD comedies that ABC tends to screw over (H&F, Perfect, Rules, Savages, Hot Properties, Crumbs, Bonnie, etc)

reply

If GA is more the favorite now, that's how you know sex really does sell. I think everybody has slept with everybody on there. And we're only in season 2. The bomb squad two-parter was the most tacky and irresponsible two hours of television I've seen in quite a while. But, you know, who cares what I think of it - I'd kill for the ratings of either one of them.

The co-creator of S&D is a nice guy. You know, I'm sure they're all nice people. I have nothing against any of them. Or, really, the show. It's just... ABC shouldn't be taking away promotional dollars from us to give to them. Certainly not when they are the lowest-rated show on the network. But then I suppose it does us good in that regard. We need something around that's lower-rated.

You included us in that list of good comedies, so, hey, thank you. And I hope you do get to see the 8 shelved CRUMBS eps.

reply

Yeah, I saw the GA episode after the Superbowl, I thought it was OK, nothing, amazing, nor special. I agree about S&D. Nothing against the show, but if it's the lowest rated show, why are they still airing tons and tons of commercials of it, when there are other shows that deserves just as much/more promotion. I know it has to be frustrating to you, and your show. ;(

reply

At least Less than Perfect is FINALLY coming back.

from Zap2it.com:

'Commander In Chief' Gets New Home
ABC also revives 'Less Than Perfect'
March 29 2006

Geena Davis on 'Commander in Chief'LOS ANGELES -- ABC has moved its freshman drama "Commander In Chief" out of the way of FOX's powerhouse Tuesday-night lineup, but the show won't exactly have an easy go of it when it returns next month.

The network says "Chief," which stars Golden Globe winner Geena Davis as the first female president, will make its return to the schedule Thursday, April 13. It will air at 10 p.m. ET Thursdays for the remainder of the season, with the thus-far successful "American Inventor" as its lead-in.

The move of "Commander In Chief" to Thursday also makes way for the somewhat surprising return of "Less Than Perfect" to the network. ABC picked up the show for a fourth season last spring but has said hardly a thing about it since then.

"Less Than Perfect," which stars Sara Rue as an assistant at a news network, will air at 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting April 18. It will be preceded by episodes of "Hope & Faith" at both 8:30 and 9 p.m.; "According to Jim" will keep its 8 o'clock berth. (Current 9 p.m. occupant "Sons & Daughters" will wrap its season on April 11.)

reply

Hey, thanks for the article! I couldn't be more happier about Less Than Perfect, esp. having it's first time slot back at 9:30PM on Tuesdays. Is that TWO new episodes of Hope & Faith? Excellent 90 mintues there. Then there's "Pepper Dennis" and "Teachers", ah. I need to buy a third VCR.

Nice to hear CIC is back, too. Did well so well, it dips and then, they have to almost-cancel it? Ughhh.

reply

[deleted]

I liked the Crumbs. Except for the actor playing Jack (who really can't act), the cast was beginning to work well together.

ABC did this to me with LOST. The 1st season they showed 3 new episodes, repeated those. Then they aired 2 new episodes, repeated the old 3, then showed about 4 new ones. They made it entirely too difficult to watch. Gave up on it and now boycott all shows ABC. I much prefer hassle free television.
