Has anyone seen this film outside of Canada?

Has this film been released outside of Canada? Please let me know. Thank you.

I don't think anyone but Canadians would come to this page.

I live in North Carolina and there has been NO mention of the film at all. I heard about it when i was browsing tsn.ca/hockey

reply

That's a shame, it's a good movie.

reply

it's being released in decmber of '07

reply

I live in Colorado and am hoping it will be released here

reply

Same here! I've been checking the Landmark Theaters every week hoping they'll get it. I'd really love to see it. Hopefully, we'll at least get it on DVD.

reply

The DVD came out today. It is in region 1 and I'm sure that Americains interested in seeing it wouldn't have any problems ordering it from Amazon.ca http://www.amazon.ca/Rocket-Charles-Binam%e9/dp/B000GJ0KJQ/sr=1-4/qid=1158747461/ref=sr_1_4/702-2582184-9461631?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

Note that this movie is not just about his hockey exploits. Yes hedid revolutionize Hockey but he also fought againts discrimination againts French Canadian players in a English run NHL.

So don't expect a full English version. Tere is a lot of english in this movie but the message Maurice tried to pass all of his life wouldn't be projected if it was entirely dubbed.

reply

Because it's mostly about Canadian hertiage, it is very doubtful that it'l be released in America. If it is, probably in the Steel towns ie- Detroit, states that are just under eastern Canada. I agree though, it was an excellent movie no doubt. = )

reply

I am from NH, and saw the movie in Montréal. It was very good, I never knew the refs of the NHL were such sleezoids in the 40's and 50's. It was run like the WWF for god's sake..thank god someone said " Il Faut Que Ça Change!". I wish we got more Canadian flicks down here, we're close enough anyway. I also saw a preview for "Bon Cop,Bad Cop" it looked great, but I bet it won't be here:(
Interesting to note, I saw it in the theatre where the old Forum once stood, and sat in the bank of seats that was preserved where the red line would have been on the ice.

reply

thats awsome. im glad im canadian and glad soomeone finally did a movie on Maurice Richard... as for america yeah... i kinda find it "stupid" that it wouldn't be realeased there.

reply

Yes, it's now a 23 theater multiplex.

It's good that they are still using the building, but it still makes me a little sad to see it

On another note, they are turning Maple Leaf Gardens into a Superstore (grocery/clothing/shops)

reply

Maple Leaf Gardens was a far better name than "The Air Canada Centre"
I hate how this keeps happening, all the good things in Toronto are being given corporate names: The Canon Theatre?

reply

hearing the sky dome become the Rogers Centre made me cry

reply

It's happening in Winnipeg too. We just built a new arena which opened last year, and it was going to be called The True North Centre. It's now known as the MTS Centre. Someone from Manitoba Telecom System decided that since they "sponsored" the building it needed their name in big glowing letters.
yuck!

reply

The MTS Center ? LOL!!!, in French MTS means "Maladie Transmise Sexuellement (STD in english)" and you say they put their name in big glowing letter... But it can't beat the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville (wonder what the guy think when he give a name to his company, I mean there wasn't a better name that Gaylord)

Naming rights are big in corporate sponsorship. You'll never see any sports stadium of any kind with an "original" name again. There's too much money involved.

reply

Well, back to the topic on the movie, I thought it was extremely well done.
As for it not being shown in the U.S., that sucks. It's really worth seeing, especially if you are a hockey fan. If you aren't...I'm sure you'll still enjoy it.

Better luck next year, guys.

Habs Punk said "You'll never see any sports stadium of any kind with an "original" name again"

Not entirely true. When Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are either re-created or at least get a 9-figure renovation, they will definetly keep their name. Even though the other Chicago team had their stadium named after one of their early owners and opted to sell naming rights, you won't see it happen at Wrigley.
Yankee Stadium, if it ever rebuilds I could see it doing something like "citiBank Yankee Stadium" so that's a half point. Out of all American sports, baseball tries hardest to market itself as old-fashioned, so in certain uncommon markets it is more financially responsible to discard naming rights.

And to the girl that said she cried when the SkyDome became the Rogers Centre, which I hope was sarcastic because the fact that even a child would cry over that is hilarious but anyways the Blue Jays were first majority owned by and had their franchise fee paid for by Labatt Corporation, who's most famous product was and still is Labatt Blue pilsner. so even though it's subliminal, the Toronto baseball clubs nickname was corporately sponsored. I don't think there is another instance of this in the 4 major team sports in north america.

reply

WTF??!! They are doing WHAT to MLG??? They turned the Forum into a movie theatre? Oh how that hurts to hear, I grew up watching HNIC from those buildings. I remember crying when they closed them down, even Chicago Stadium. Now it's a paking lot. Wow, that's heart breaking...

reply

It is heartbreaking to see MLG become an oversized Grocery Store. You all should join me in boycotting Loblaws, been doing it since they purchased the gardens.

reply

I would love too, if they weren't the only grocery store in town...When I leave town, believe me I will join the boycott. Giant poo heads.

Here in Slovenia, it was shown on film festival. Being a hockey fan I was glad they did it! Loved the movie. :o)

I am from Norway and a big hockey fan, and I saw the film two months ago. I think i stumbled over here on Imdb, and downloaded it after that. I loved the movie, and made all my friends, who are also big hockey fans, watch it. Everybody agreed that the Rocket is a great movie. Up there among the best sports movie ever made, like Raging bull and the Hustler, and defenitely the best hockeymovie ever. Slapshot and youngblood coming in second and third. I wasn´t aware of the mannor the french canadians were treated during the period that Maurice Richard played, so I were really shocked and disgusted that the racists in the hockey federation even has trophies named after them.
After reading up on the history of Maurice Richard (and alot of the Canadiens players) and the riot I think maybe adding more stuff about the riot and the politics surrounding the NHL thoose days(maybe adding 20 minutes to the film or so) would have made this film a perfect ten.

To reply the subject; I haven´t spoken to anyone here in Norway, who has seen or heard of the film.
I really hope the Rocket is released on region 2 in Europe soon, not only region 1.

reply

some people in france have probably seen this film

reply

I came across this movie on an NHL2k7 message board and searched for it on Ebay. Bought it for under 20 dollars.

reply

The movie is being shown twice at the AFI Film Festival in Dallas.

reply

Someone working for the same AFI Film Festival in Dallas told me that it won't be released anywhere else theatrically in America, but there should be an American DVD release sometime in April. I don't have specifics though.

reply

if enough people demand its release then the local theatre should show it!

I am in the eastern US and bought MRTR sight unseen, mostly as a hockey fan who likes Roy Dupuis' work. I was not disappointed, and am now more interested in the history behind the dislike of Canada's French speaking population...

"history behind the dislike of Canada's French speaking population..."

The film was released here in Finland about 5 months ago, just bought and watched it today. Great movie, enjoyed it a lot. There's far too few good hockey movies.

I'm not surprised it got attention in Finland.

There was a screening at a theatre in Vienna last spring (which I learned about afterwards *grr*). I bought the DVD in Kitchener in June though, so my copy is going around over here...

reply

I was at a pre-season game here in Phoenix, Arizona and they were showing the trailer at the game. I think it has an October 5th release date. If there is a theater showing it nearby, I plan on seeing it.

I just got my ticket to see it Sunday at the Scottsdale Film Festival.

It's actually going to be shown at the Pittsburgh Film Festival next weekend.
