Can someone please explain the ending?

I was quite enjoying it up until I was totally baffled by the ending. It didn't make any sense to me, could someone explain it please if it made any sense?

Maybe I misunderstood my take on it was...

Both the mother and son were trying to find each other, having got seperated when they were dragged down the river. The boy was at km31, and the mother in the sewers.

The boy seemed to be out in the real world, and trying to get his mother back by luring women to a half life, where the mother can posses their bodies and come back to life.

But the boy kept targetting people in the wrong place, so the mother could not come back form the dead.

So when the twin was hit, although it was in the wrong place, she kept a psyhcic link with the other twin. The ghosts were able to manipulate this to lure her to the mothers haunting place (the sewers) and have her die (happy to have her kill herself or trick Nuno into killing her. The link with the twin meant that the mother could possess the living twins body, and return back to life.

could be tlaking out my arse here, but thats what I made of it. Unfortunatly I am ignorant and can't read spanish, so can't appreciate the other threads on this board.

Digstarfx, you have provided the best explanation so far.

Great explanation, makes sense ...

how many children did the ghost have? Why did she choose to wake up in camotose sister's body instead of healthy sister's one?

What did the girl's mom and the otherghost have to do with everything?

"how many children did the ghost have?"
She had one son, what makes you think she might have had more children?

"Why did she choose to wake up in comatose sister's body instead of healthy sister's one?"
She couldn't just possess the healthy sister's body precisely because she was alive. The comatose sister, on the other hand, was trapped between the world of the living and the world of the dead and the ghost was able to slip into her body. Or something like that.

About the ghost of the older woman - I have no idea what she had to do with anything and why she was helping the mother. Perhaps she wasn't personally involved, but simply was aware of what was going on and wanted to put an end to it.
And the twins' mother - I think her ghost wasn't actually there in the sewers, it was an illusion, they were just trying to lure Catalina into killing herself and used the image of her mother.
About her role in the film as a whole - she was just there to justify a few additional scares like Catalina's nightmares. Which didn't really scare me, by the way, because I couldn't help thinking Catalina's mother looked like Keith Flint from The Prodigy while she was in the bath tube, which made me laugh. :D

Now about the boy - I don't think he was in the world of the living, or at least he didn't have an actual body there. Yes, certain people could hear and see him, but they could also hear and see his mother. I think that just as a young woman had to be sacrificed in the sewers (so that the mother could possess her body), so a little boy has to be sacrificed near km 31 (so that the son can possess his body and finally be reunited with his mother).

At one point, can't recall when but quite early on, we see a woman drowning and looking from a little girl towards a little boy. I too was trying to figure out where the other child was as it was the only time we ever saw her, other than that it was always just the boy, but she was there, drowning in the water with them.

Interesting theories, better than the plot of the film itself. But I doubt that was what the director and screenwriter had in mind.
Although the story is "loosely" based on "la llorona" legend, I think the screenwriter just wanted to shoot a cool but senseless ending.
The story has some good moments but overall is just a collection of clichés borrowed most of them from J-Horror films.
However the film boasts good production values and overall good performances bar the spanish actor Adrià Collado (Nuño) whose performance is AWFUL!

I have seen worst films with much bigger budgets (mainly Hollywood productions) but also much better films with smaller budgets.

8/10 for the technical aspect of the film
4/10 for the senseless and boring (at times) story
Overall 6/10.

Thank you for those great explanations. I just finished viewing this, and was so thrown by the ending. It kept me engrossed up until the last 12 min. or so.

Well explained digstarfx!

Second that! But I reckon the sub - plot involving the fate of the twins' mother was a complete waste of time and distracted greatly from the main plot. It didn't appear to have any direct relationship with the main thread involving the mother and son.
