Cancelling the shows with real potential..

I was a big fan of Threshold, I got into it, I loved the story line and the characters and then I found out it was cancelled.
E-ring, has great characters, real potential, and now that's been cancelled too? It just makes me really frustrated when reality tv shows that are literally all the same continue to be made with huge budgets. E-ring is an entertaining show that keeps you watching. I think these tv bosses need to re-assess what makes great television. They are cancelling shows which if they were allowed to continue, could win them awards.

reply

First off, they aren't trying to make great television, they're trying to make miney. Secondly, awards are fine, but if that doesn't get them high ratings, they don't mean squat. If he ratings aren't there, they can't sell the commercials, which causes the shows to get cancelled. It could be the best show of all time, but if no one is watching it, the show is a failure. Conversely, it can be the absolute worst show of all time, but if everyone is watching it, it's considered a success.

s for the huge budgets of reality shows, that isn't true. Many of the reality shows are less expensive which makes the networks more money than a more expensive one hour drama. Money is one of the big reasons that you find so few really good SciFi programs that are a success. They just cost too much to produce. Even though they can have good ratings, they bring in enough revenue to justify the costs incurred.

wow, we haven't even got this show in australia yet and it has been cancelled already... pity i kind of like the military shows being a JAG fan for over 6 years.

Lorenzo D. Yes, I also was surprised at the cancelation of E-Ring.

Especially with the excellent track record of successful tv shows

produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Just look at the ratings success

of all three CSI series! The powers that be at NBC-TV just don't

have the patience to wait and see how the ratings would've grown

in due time. I completely loved this show and I'm a long time fan

of Benjamin Bratt. I really liked how his commanding officer

character always was so concerned and looked out for the well being

and morale of the men under his command. He cared more about the

soldiers and the missions to be carried out and less about the

politics and the politicians in the federal government not to mention

the high ranking military brass in the Pentagon. It's a shame that

NBC has become so much like the FOX Network in being so trigger happy

and having very little patience when it comes to canceling the very

good or excellent tv dramas and renewing stupid shows and producing

pathetically awful reality tv programs. Does anyone recall these

shows from 2004 & 2005? "Next Action Star," "Who Wants To Marry My Dad,"

"Who Wants To Be A Hilton?" Just three examples of stupid, pathetically

bad reality shows that drew very mediocre ratings! Oh and let's not

forget "Surface" a very well written and produced sci-fi drama from

fall of 2005. I also loved it and was so dissapointed that it got

canceled. At least the complete series is out on dvd to buy.

Let's admit that NBC's brass really sucks and lacks creative and

original thinking in regards to excellent, well thought out tv

programs! They are as bad if not worse than Fox! At least CBS & ABC

have the patience to test out prime time tv shows to see if those

series catch on with a sizable viewing audience. And this is one

reason why we have 3 different CSI's to watch and don't forget those

are produced by the brilliant, creative mindset of Jerry Bruckheimer!

I know that I mentioned this fact early on in my post though I wanted

to state it again. I hope that The E-Ring's only season does get

released on dvd, if so I will buy it. It was so much better and more

realistic than the similar themed "The Unit" on CBS. And I do watch

that show as well. Anyone else miss watching E-Ring as well?

The show practically offended everybody on the planet. "We are America, we can do anything we want"

reply

Yeah that comment annoyed a lot of people, but seriously, big deal...A friend of mine got very offended by that comment but I convinced him to carry on watching the series and to ignore the "We are America"-esq comments and he really loved the show.
The very end of the series was so well done and for all those that were offended by the "We are America" comments, it was a rather good ending. The message that everone is accountable for their actions is a very important one in todays world and sent a very telling political message for the current governments of the USA and the UK...shame they cancelled it. The show could have explored that so well in the 2nd series.

reply

oh fox isn't half as bad as most of them, at least fox isn't like the rest of the media, but shame on them for cancelling a show that could of had something on 24 if they wanted it to have. invasion had something like 8 million viewers and that wasnt good enough for abc, what the hell. I am telling you the media is abusing it's rights. The only way the media will come back into a reasonable connection with the rest of america is if something life changing happens to them, with the way the world is going, the media has to change, this will pass. The media was great until something called Vietnam came along...

reply

As much as I love E-Ring (and hope it returns), it would never be as riveting as 24. So far this season, 24 has been nothing short of incredible. E-Ring's various storylines take place over days, as where 24's take place in the course of one day...overall, you just can't beat that.

"I've seen things in this city that make Dante's Inferno read like Winnie The Pooh."

reply

'24' no doubt it is riveting, what I find rather strange is that within a span of 24 hours no one eats, drinks or even goes to the toilet.

reply

"Cancelling the shows with real potential.. " -------> the only real potential had was the potential of being closed before 5 episodes---------

This is sooooo true. Especially for NBC and FOX. Why must we be so inundated with the booooring "reality" shows and the "ho-hum" over-sexualized nonsense that tries pass itself off as "comedy" today? Is there anything dummer than "2 and a half men" which seems like it's written by someone with half a brain located only in their pants. Then there's the "old/new/confused/stupid christine". And to think they give Emmy awards to these people!!!!
Shows like "E-Ring" and "The Threshold" get cancelled on NBC; "X-Files" and "Lone Gunmen" on FOX (which replaced that with adventures of a tick man or something); WB cancels "Birds of Prey" and then melds with UPN to create that hideous thing called CW/My....(whatever the local city is). Dumming down by the cretins who run the industry. They cancelled the very popular "Joan of Arcadia" on CBS and fans are still unforgiving, replacing it with something vaguely spiritual -a woman who talks dead people into "crossing over". I think it had something to do with bringing God into the picture too directly. It was "let's be spritual", but avoid mention of any specific Supreme Being. When are the dead-heads who do programming going to get it???!!! People are tuning out of the boorish shows offered on network and even cable or satellite in favor of using their DVDs, computers or ignoring TV and settling for radio, the internet or, better still, curling up with a good book. Which is where I think I am heading right now...

Lorenzo D.

I must agree with your synopsis. Yes I also like all of the tv shows

you've mentioned especially "E-Ring, Threshold, & Birds Of Prey."

"Lone Gunmen" had serious potential though both Fox TV and the shows

creator Chris Carter lacked patience to wait for the ratings to

possibly grow. And let's not forget that he was also the creative

mind behind "The X-Files" which grew into a blockbuster sensation.

NBC-TV just is too impatient like Fox and is so trigger happy with

canceling very good and excellent tv programs! They just can't seem

to get any clue!

The media has always had a left wing bias, but it was the vietnam era when the soviet sleeper cells finally took over the media.

It seems to me that lately, if a show isn't an INSTANT smash hit, they cancel it so they can put some lame ass reality show on. No more waiting a couple of seasons to see what it can do. If I remember correctly, it took until the 3rd season for Seinfeld to really take off, a couple of seasons for Friends as well, and those were 2 of the most popular shows ever made.

not even dennis hopper with his stellar performance would have save this show from just throwing random crap from the TV

reply

... so you liked it?

reply

I enjoyed E-Ring and I'm a Liberal.

Sure this show was a bit of a right-wing fantasy, but 24 with Jack Bauer is ten times worse and I enjoy that show as well. It's not brain surgery, you just have to be able to seperate fantasy from reality and not think what you see on television is how things are in real life.

I'm really sad they cancelled E-Ring it did have a lot of potential. I was surprised at how good some of the episodes were. The one about the North Korean Submarine was my favorite.

It was a good show that was enjoyable to watch, I'll miss it.

Great entertainment, TV channels haven't the got balls anymore, Why did they cancel the likes of E-ring, Threshold, Threat Matrix, Surface and Invasion all they are is good entertainment, look at Stargate SG1, it wasn't very popular at first, then ten series later it came to an end. Come on TV channels give these shows a chance, listen to your viewer, all we want is more than one series.

American Dreams was one of my favorites, yet they cancelled it to be replaced by some moronic reality nonsense featuring Martha Stewart that lasted 1 or 2 episodes. You can't tell me that 1 or 2 episodes featuring that criminal bitch made the network more money than another season or 2 of American Dreams would have.
