The extended European cut was better

I rented the shortened version from my local store, and fell in love with this film. Then, I bought the extended cut and was over the moon! All the little gaps were fleshed out, like when Mrs. Bolton sees Parkin watching the house with such longing. Seeing her connect the dots - the acting was so subtle and I can't believe that scene was left out of the shorter version. Others scenes too. Parkin had more dialogue that warmed up his character overall. This was a much better film for me.

After that, I bought the book, "John Thomas and Lady Jane". Now, I can say without a doubt that Ferran successfully conveyed the spirit of the book. So beautiful. This is one of my favorite books now. I found it much more believable and romantic than the final "Lady Chatterley's Lover". And Parkin was PERFECTLY cast.

I agree with everything you said. I thought this film was beautifully directed and acted. The French really do have a way of capturing the nuances of romance on film. Although the film was very sensual, the sex scenes were not gratuitous. I think they were needed to understand the dynamics of the relationship between the two. This was, in my opinion, an excellent film.

May I ask where the uncut version can be located please? :) Thank you

THESTARCHILD 90, you may be able to find it through netflicks. I couldn't find it in my local chainstore: Blockbuster, Hollywood Video. I wound up just ordering it used from Amazon. I'm getting my money's worth out of it by sharing it with all my friends. (The book too.) Hope this helps.

arty mom...thank you. That's the uncut version? I rented a nearly 3 hour version from netflix and really enjoyed it. Is the uncut one like 240 mins? That's what I read. Anyway, thank you

If the version you saw had Mrs. Bolton looking through the window and seeing Parkin out under the tree, then you had the European Extended cut. If you didn't see her connecting the dots, then you had the cut one.

I saw the edited one. Thank you! I just put the uncut one on my netflix hehe I am so excited

I just watched the uncut version today. I must say it is down to Earth, classy and exquisitely beautiful. It is definitely the best uncut :) Thank you for recommending it to me!

You're welcome! Did you find the book?

I own the text Lady Chatterley's Lover which is favorite. Do you recommend the version John Thomas and Lady Jane that this version is adapted from? :)

I liked it better. Don't get me wrong, I did like the chances Lawrence took with LCL's coarseness, but I did like the more gentle Parkin better than Mellors. JT&LJ's Connie is different too. It's subjective. I happen to like JT&LJ best. You decide for yourself! :-) As for me, I'm reading all the Lawrence I can get my hands on...

reply

I will! Lawrence was such a genius :)

BarbiCute, I find it funny how hypocritical most women are. When there is male nudity, even when its a graphic close-up of a semi-erect penis, I often hear women claim the "nudity wasn't gratuitous". But you can bet if movies like this were fair and showed a close-up of the actress's wet vagina (I'm talking about the actual vagina, not just the pubic hair), then these same women would be the first to complain, screaming about how unecessary it was to zoom in on her *beep* and how "exploitative" and "gratuitous" the nudity was. Just once I'd like to see some mainstream movies show close-ups of FEMALE GENITALIA (NOT just boobs or pubic hair, but the actual female sex organs)the same way they show male genitalia, and just watch how all the women will howl about the nudity and call it gratuitous and unecessary.

Hey Barbi:

Don't worry about KellyCastlebridge. He's a sad pathetic loser who has no life, but to comment about the lack of movie depictions of womens genitalia. Sorry you had to experience his drivel here. Its tough for him, living in his parents' basement well into his 30s.

I'm sure your parents have a nice home, that you occupy the basement of rent free! That would be a pretty good life, but you really have to hate your utter lack of female companionship and sexual ignorance that you have to repeatedly post the same drivel over and over again! Keep dreaming Loser. Wishing makes it so!

arty mom, if you ever have a look back at these boards, maybe you (or someone else) can answer a question?

I saw the film on (English) TV recently - and, like you thought it was brilliant - but I didn't recognise the scene with Mrs Bolton that you mentioned, which makes me wonder if what they showed the other night was the shorter cut. Unfortuantely when it was on telly, the film was interspersed with dozens and dozens of four-minute ad-breaks, so with all that it's difficult for me to tell how long the actual film itself lasted.

As you own the extended cut of the film, could you tell me what the running time (in minutes) of it is? I'd really like to get my hands on the extended DVD version; what they're currently selling on amazon here is a 168 minute film and I wonder if that's it.
