or should this movie be in english? i mean, the original book 'lady chatterley's lover' by DH Lawrence is clearly an English text, so why did they have it in french?
i feel like i'm just missing something...
There is an English version of it with Sean Bean and Joely Richardson, which is also very good. I enjoyed this version as well though.
shareLol, you're missing the fact that the French are allowed to make a movie from an English novel in their own language. I'm just happy they were gracious enough to give us English subtitles. I'm still mad at them about "Les Rois Maudits" (1972)...
shareIt was made by French people, mostly for a French-speaking market. Great novels are normally translated into many languages. If every nation kept their own literature for themselves the world would be a much duller place!

Add to that, the fact that when they were discussing the baby's parentage, it was a requirement that the baby have English parentage on both sides, lol. I sat there thinking, "But you're FRENCH!!!" And yes, I realize that the book was written in English. My point was that I couldn't get past the feeling of everything being French in the movie.
shareI totally agree, but having just finished John Thomas and Lady Jane (read the 3rd version of LCL years ago), I really wish it had been in English with the Midlands dialect intact. Parkin's use of dialect--usually so connected with the emotions he's feeling whether they be arousal, anger, love, despair, etc.--was so integral to the book, that I really missed having it here.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change anything else though--the casting, acting, atmosphere, story and scenes were so true to the book, even the subtitles were as true to the letter of the book as was possible without the dialect. I was delighted!!!
For anyone who loved the movie, but hasn't read the book (2nd version), DO! It's worth it. I cried.
Why was there an English-language version of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" called "Dangerous Liaisons"? I'm not complainin'.
