Veronica Mars-like concept

As anyone who watches Veronica Mars, which one of the actors in this movie, Teddy Dunn, stars in, will notice the similarites between this movie and VM. In VM, there's a group of popular kids (including Dunn's character) that the teachers all favor. The main character (Veronica in VM, Violet in this movie) is an outcast with "acerbic wit and acute sense of social justice" who takes matters into her own hands, and also likes the Dunn's character (except in VM, she used to date Dunn's character). I just find it weird that Teddy would choose to star in something so similar to his TV show.
