Is he the BEST mentor in Bollywood?

Seeing works of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Pradeep Sarkar and Rajkumar Hirani one just wonders if Vidhu Vinod Chopra runs the best school in Bollywood. His disciples are far beyond comparison when we consider Yashraj directors like Arjun Sablok, Siddharth raj anand and Shaad Ali.

Without a doubt. Having worked for him for 2 years I can say by personal experience that it's a fantastic experience watching him in action and learning from him. He lives and breathes cinema.

Would you happen to have his contact information, in case I wished to seek employment from him?

Also, I agree that Chopra's "students" make much better films, by and large, than do those of many other "big names" (such as Ram Gopal Varma's).

It would be awesome to see Amitabh Bacchan direct after he retires.

No, I don't see him as a good mentor at all, let alone best. I am saying this not only because I feel that he isn't a very good director. Most of his films have a great subject to tell a story about, but at the end it just doesn't work for me. I find PARINDA extremely filmi and melodramatic and loud, it just wasn't believable for me. MISSION KASHMIR, again a good story, was messed up by this action-movie format in which he told it. EKLAVYA, well, read the other thread for my comments on it, was too very disappointing. I think technically his films are great, but storywise and from the storytelling point of view it lacks a much.

The directors he "produced" aren't great either. There is Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has a great visual style, but none of his films were original. Pradeep Sarkar, only one movie old, has made PARINEETA, which was okay, not a great story for the time we live in, technically great, but the ending was really disappointingly dramatic. Then there is Rajkumar Hirani, the best of all. I think his movies are good and funny, but I don't like his style of telling the stories in the typical "Bollywood" format. Still, his movies are nice to watch (once).

Best mentor out there? Not at all.

hey, that's strange anwarji as i totally agree about the ending of Parineeta and well weverything about it. but i thought directorwise, VVC's 1942 A Love Story was good and Sanjay Bhansali's Khamoshi was mindblowing. What's your opinion on these two films? As for Hirani, wasn't the first munnabhai a ripoff Patch Adams (I still enjoyed it)? and i really didn't like Lage Raho..it's just ok.

reply

I saw 1942 A Love Story as a child, Flekks-ji, and I don't really remember much from it. I agree Khamoshi is a good film, especially the parts around the family, because I thought the romance subplot was dragging sometimes.

I was 10 years old at that time. :)

dude, you are young! i feel so old! anyway, you have very mature taste in cinema.

reply

Thank you. Age is just a number, isn't it? :)

Well, so far, I like (though don't necessarily love) everything I've seen him touch.

Eklavya held together very well for me, partly because I was not looking for an action movie.
