Peter Mannion confirmed main character in Series 4!

I just read an interview with the Iannucci, Armstrong and Blackwell in The Times today, they were being asked mainly about the book released - The Missing DoSAC Files - and also the new series, and - thank the Gods - Peter Mannion is set to be the main character!

I'd post the interview, but alas, The Times is behind a paywall, take my word for it instead.

Thoughts? I'm bloody pleased, Mannion is my favourite character,

I love Peter Mannion. He's wonderful.

Did they mention when we might see Series 4?

reply

Only 'soon'. I think they're filming it now - I assumed previously that it was finished - so I don't really know. New year?

reply

Nicola's gone then?

So presumably Malcolm will be steering *beep* into the Minister's faces. Rather than trying to keep his ministers out of the firing line.

Could be interesting.

reply

I didnt really care for Mannion or his team. I never found them funny especially the woman who was supposed to be Olly's girlfriend. I do hope Nicola will be back though.

reply

If there's no jamie I'm not interested.

I always think of Mannion as basically Hugh.2 , which is no bad thing actually - Hugh's character didn't come to a natural end so giving a similar part to another actor worked.

Talking about similar characters, Tom Hollander's "The *beep* just didn't work for me. Tom Hollander was unconvincing, especially after all that build up. Plus, he's just a more psychotic but less efficient malcolm - which we have Jamie for surely? (Actually where did Jamie go??). I thought the original spin doctor type (the bloke who told Mannion to not tuck his shirt in) worked as an antidote to Malcolm; when there was a lot of full-force bollocking in dosac, cutting back to the other team with that bloke in his shrit-and-jeans combo talking media twadle freshened the show up a bit.

reply

I think that Hollander was meant to be the Andy Coulson parody, with Stuart being the wishy-washy, green lover that is Steve Hilton. I'd still rather see Stuart though, he was a brilliant antidote to Malcolm, and underneath his touchy-feely exterior, he was just as ruthless.

reply

Yep, I agree with this assessment. And I also prefer Stuart to the F@&%er; given real-life circumstances, maybe the F@&%er will be out of a job early in the series ;-)

reply

It's my understanding they're just changing sides, as per the results of the election. So now Nicola/Glenn/Toby/Malcolm are in Shadow and Mannion/Phil/Emma/Stuart are in Government. Right?

reply

I hope so. With the roles inverted, things may get quite funny. I so want to see Malcom using his connections to throw *beep* at the government.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

reply

I think that's about right, with more focus on Mannion's lot, as they're governing. I wonder if Nicola will remain, though, what with shadow cabinet changes after elections.

I know what you mean about Julius. I used to cringe whenever I saw him, but now I cheer when he bobs onto screen. I adored Mannion from the beginning, though.

What the sh!t is that font? Are you speaking to us from the year 1997?

If Mannion sneers less and is slightly more empathic, I suppose I'm fine with him getting the star treatment.

reply

Makes sense. Hopefully the shake up will be successful.

So, where's the fourth series? Is it still being made?

Scratch that, just checked google, new series due in autumn.

"At a time where actual politicians seem to be cutting out the middle man and producing their own satirical strings of real-life *beep*-ups and PR disasters, you could argue that a new series of political comedy The Thick of It seems a bit redundant. You could, but we won’t of course, because a new series of Armando Iannucci’s slickly scripted satire is nothing but cause for celebration.

BBC Two is welcoming a seven-episode long fourth series of The Thick of It in the autumn, featuring everybody’s favourite expletive-spitter, Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), alongside actors Rebecca Front, Chris Addison and more. Word has it that the new series targets the Coalition government, as well as a “Leveson-styled public enquiry”. Filming is complete, and the episodes are being readied for broadcast as we speak. Delightful."
