'I hate him presumably as much as James May hates himself.'

I don't get this line. James May was a fine nickname for Phil a few episodes earlier but this line didn't make sense to me. It was when Malcolm was talking about how much he hated Steve Fleming.

"Kick her in the balls!"

reply

Perhaps it refers to the fact that May knows a thing or two about cars and Clarkson and Hammond (his Top Gear co-hosts) possibly don't.
This might make him feel a little guilty?

reply

There are a few jokes at the expense of all the hosts of Top Gear, at various points. Presumably Malcolm is not a fan.

reply

Plus James May is usually really self-deprecating and not as cocksure as the other two presenters.

And he has a constantly harried look about him.

reply

James May is an intelligent, articulate, interesting individual, and Malcolm has previously made clear the contempt in which he holds Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, so I think Malcolm was implying that James May cries himself to sleep at night because he has to present a vacuous tv show with a couple of berks. That was my take, anyway.

I think Elijaprice got it
