Jimmy or Logan?

Something that confused me:

Throughout the film, Sabretooth calls Wolverine "Jimmy" but everyone else refers to him as "Logan"

What gives?

Logan is an alias that he adopted while on the run. It is taken from his biological father's name; Thomas Logan. Wolverine's actual birth name is James Hewitt and due to Sabretooth's familiarity with him, Sabretooth continues to call him by his old name despite Wolverine introducing himself to everyone else as Logan.

I wish they explained that somewhere in the movie. It was just odd. I didn't even know his father's name was Thomas Logan.

So I guess this whole time Logan's name comes from the first man he killed.

Yeah, you have to know background details to know where exactly Logan comes from, (his biological father is named Thomas Logan in the credits, though not spoken in the film) but I think it's possible to glean from the movie itself that he changed his name from Jimmy to Logan and out of sentimentality Sabretooth continued to refer to him by his old name.

Isn't his last name Howlett??

Putting aside Logan’s background, the thing is Victor is his brother. Everyone else... is everyone else.

Someone close to you, a friend or relative, can identify you by a different name than most people. Besides, “Logan” would be the kind of guy who’d prefer to be known by a name he didn’t use in the past.
