Johanna's urine tasting skills

I've heard of diagnosing someone by the color/smell of their urine, but I've never heard of the "taste the urine" pregnancy test. Is this based on fact, or something invented to show how cool Joan is? (and provide certifiable proof that Johanna is pregnant, not just missing her period due to malnutrition)

As far back as Ancient Greece tasting (also examining and smelling) urine was a way of diagnosing not only pregnancy but other diseases as well. In fact the name "diabetes" means "sweet urine" due to the sweet taste because of elevated sugar levels.
