'Poorly-made, boring rants,' and 'Ultraliberals'

Rants like the review by Youaresquishy currently leading the charge on McLibel's IMDb page.

I'm suspicious. I've never known any liberal of any stripe to self-identify as an "ultraliberal," that's the kind of word people pick up on from listening to a lot of right-wing ranting on cable news and talk radio.

And in my estimation, no "ultraliberal" would so misjudge the worldwide balance of power as to say that "the complaint needs to be directed...at the consumers that support McDonald's and the workers that won't unionize and that accept such low wages." [of course that quote excludes the more moderate part of his argument, I know.] But the error stands. The whole "vote with you dollars" argument is one of the most offensive Friedmanite neoliberal (look it up!) farces I've heard too many times

The reviewer also detects dismay from Morris and Steel and other commentators about multinationals' profit priorities. Were we watching the same film? I don't think there is a doubt in anyone's mind, really, that the bottom line is it for big business. No one I can think of is confused on that issue. The claims the defendants make in the film is that McDonald's (and others) try to draw attention away from the human, material, and environmental toll that such profit-driven monomania has led to.

"Ultraliberal" is not another name for "cranky film reviewer with a self-righteous axe to grind." Saint-Just was an ultraliberal. VI Lenin was an ultraliberal. Arthur Cravan was probably an ultraliberal. Youaresquishy is not.

No, that's not just my opinion; I'm positive.
