Playing other campaigns

I have only played the Nightfall campaign, but if I want to play the original Prophecies, can I carry the Nightfall chars with me over?

Yes.

EDIT: There should be a quest somewhere in Kamadan that ends with you coming to Lion's Arch. Of course, that quest is only available if you merge your Nightfall and Prophecies accounts.
