Captain America Movies Should Have Stayed in the Past

We have an unpopular opinion: Captain America movies would have been better if they stayed in the 1940s and World War II.

Lol.

I adore the fantastical 1940s/WWII setting of the first film (and I mean really), but... hell naw! IF Cap gets another film or maybe a TV series, then having him back in the 40’s while we explore his world some more (while he jumps back to the future somehow) might be cool. As is, I think the two obvious reasons they didn't do that with Evans' version was because 1) Cap obviously had to join The Avengers+building the MCU without him would have felt wrong and 2) perhaps audiences wouldn't see much of an appeal in Captain America if he wasn't brought to modern times to show everyone what he could bring to the table. He just had to come.

Besides, Steve's story in the MCU is one of the more interesting in the world of superheroes. Oh, what we would have missed with Cap if he had stayed in the past; maybe the few that not only prefer The First Avenger (it is underrated) to the sequels, but probably don’t care about the later films (the MCU as a whole) might’ve been all up for a bunch of Captain American films set in the 1940’s. But, I’m glad they took Cap to the future where he’s had his biggest adventures and most gripping moments.
And again, he is an AVENGER!

Lastly, I'll echoe the sentiments of the less cool majority and state that The Winter Soldier & Civil War are beyond excellent.... close to perfection even. They took these films and the character in the right direction.

I always thought they moved him into the present much too quickly, they should have let him have lots of adventures and do lots of fighting before they bumped him into the present day. As it is, he joined the Avengers with about 2 days of actual combat experience.

So I would have been fine with a few WWII era sequels, if I didn't have to give up having him in the Avengers. I always thought he was the dullest comic book hero ever, but in the movies he's probably the most interesting person on the team.

I love the pulpy feel of movies like this, Rocketeer, Indiana Jones, etc. but part of what makes Captain America interesting is him being a man out of time. Seeing how a guy like Cap deals with modern terrorism, government corruption, etc. creates a huge variety of stories that I don't think we would ever get if he stayed in the 40's.

Winter Soldier and Civil War were some of the best comicbook movies, imo. And as much as I liked First Avenger, I thought both sequels were superior.

Nah the first one is the best

Nah the second one is the best

That's what the tv show "Agent Carter" was for.

They had plans for the Avengers, which includes Captain America. So they had to find a way to bring him in current day to link up with the other superheroes, like Iron Man

They could have revised the origin story to occur in the present, but they might’ve felt fans would have pushed back on such a big change
