Tommy Lee's guy was just too annoying.

He's presumably not stupid. He knows Rogers is smart, loyal and has balls the size of watermelons. That with his astonishing physical abilities and presence would make him the perfect soldier and leader, yet Tommy continues to treat him like a joke (prior to the rescue obviously). For me it's always a frustratingly silly feature of the story.

...then whoa, differences...

You forget that after Steve captured the Hydra agent, he was sent off to be a "clown" for the war bond sales. He wasn't sent to combat. When he finally made it to Europe, it was with the USO.

To the Col., it seemed like Steve was wasting what had been given to him.

It wasn't until after the rescue, when Steve showed he was willing to be on the front lines, that he respected Steve.

I didn't forget that, but the fact that The Col. was so sceptical and looking down his nose at Rogers even when he was keen to get involved is obviously a contrivance, and a kind of weak one I thought. Just so he can be the 'semi-bad guy' for us to root against, has egg on his face and must show contrition when Rogers comes through.

Any officer in his position, knowing what he knows of Rogers, would be a complete fool not to at least recommend that he be prepared for a combat role instead of the 'chorus-girl' position he's so clearly derisive of.

I didn't find it to be such. The Col. wanted the other guy because he was in great, physical shape and a leader. He wanted someone who would eat barbed wire and p!ss fire. Rogers wasn't that.

He saw that Rogers had heart, but he couldn't see past his skinny frame.

Then, after Rogers is transformed into Cap, he goes on the USO tour instead of becoming the Col's "super soldier."

There is no reason for the Col. to have any real respect for him. Had Steve fought to get out of the USO stuff and instead insisted on going to the front line, the Col. would have respected him for that.

Who says he didn't fight and got his azz-handed to him? Either way, I'm sure he resented that lesser men were being sent to die and Rogers wasn't going in to combat at all.

I don't hink you're following what he's saying. I just saw the movie again, and I totally agree with him.

The Col was an *beep* not only before Steve became Cap, but after that as well. Even though he had the physicial strength and ability to fight, he kept ignoring him. I mean, come on! The guy is probably the strongest soldier he had!

You can see what I'm talking about in the scene where Steve goes to him to ask him about Buck.

I get what you are both saying, but you don't get what I'm saying. Phillips wanted soldiers, but, instead, got a clown. We never see Steve fighting the government to go to war, and neither does Phillips. All he sees is a soldier who could help end the war selling war bonds. That isn't something Phillips is going to have a lot of respect for. Most likely Phillips served in battle in WW1, so Steve simply selling war bonds is something he'd look down on.

And, with regards to this,

You can see what I'm talking about in the scene where Steve goes to him to ask him about Buck.
- what was the Col's attitude towards Steve AFTER he rescued Bucky and all of the other men?

reply

I think your forgetting. The Col was going to send him to a lab to be a research subject. The Col wasn't going to let Steve go to combat. It wasn't that he wanted the other guy. He wanted a battalion of super soldiers. He couldn't see how one super soldier would make a difference. It was only the Senator who suggested the USO show, AFTER the Col made his decision. If I was Steve, I would certainly take the show over a lab.
