What's so special about this movie

I watch a lot of Indi Movies from Jim jarmusch etc. but mainly mainstream.
To be honest I don't get what's so special about this movie.
So would someone tell me what's so great about it, since i really can't tell why it deserves an oscar nomination (that doens't says that much about it's quality, but it's a good indicator)

reply

This film has never been nominated for Oscar...

It was to be Finland's entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film but Aki did not allow it because of Bush's foreign policy.

reply

Nearly not good as Man without a Past. I have watched that movie over 10 times. But this one, I could not watch even once. Boring and depressing. The main protagonist is just so damn lifeless.

reply

I didn't find this movie depressing, that was just reality in a modern-day Finland. Koistinen got kicked and beaten up time after time, but still he's coming back... Maybe some day he'll succeed and have his own garage or bakery or some other business.

A man of principle and very much to my liking. Kaurismäki that is, not Bush.

This represents reality. The bleak, depressing world we inhabit with our dead end employment and the company of people who will screw you over. Those of us who can laugh along find it helps get us through.

reply

..I could hardly laugh when watching it..

I certainly found nothing to laugh at while watching this movie. I remember thinking how utterly depressing Koistinen's life was and couldn't help wondering if 'letting life happen to him' isn't perhaps the reason he seems to have so little control over his own path.

I also remember thinking that I simply must neutralize the depressing effect this movie had on me by watching something life-affirming and uplifting soon after. Fortunately, a fantstic National Geographic documentary on the formation of our amazing planet hit the spot.

Maybe this movie tries to make the viewer feel the hopelessness, in this world where everybody screws you over and you don't even put up a fight to defend yourself. I mean who is this movie for? It certainly is not entertaining. It was so frustrating and depressing seeing this guy not even try to defend himself, he just took all the crap life unfairly gave him.

I've just finished watching this film on TV and I'm wondering the same thing, what is so special about it? The premise is brilliant and the director set-up a promising scenario but the potential is unfulfilled. The characters needed more depth and many were underused. The "ending" feels like the director ran out of money or ideas and thought: "This will do, I've got enough to show at festivals".

If you want to see a brilliant execution of the "man against the world" or "man in endless misery", check out Martin Scorcese's After Hours.

I guess we watched it at the same time...

The film lacked any kind of fell, atmosphere or identity.

People keep on saying we were left open to delve nto the mind of the protagonist, which may be a valid point had this protagonist had any kind of character whatsoever to delve into, which he just did not. One of the most dull films i have ever sat through.

re: 'It certainly is not entertaining.'
I found it entertaining-- amusing with witty dialogue, in a similar vein to 'Man Without a Past.' Maybe it doesn't appeal to everyone's sense of humour but it did to mine.

reply

Jim Jarmusch? Haha.

So "indi".

reply

Special? Within Kaurismäki´s filmography, nothing, really. He´s essentially just repeating/rearranging elements/motifs he´s used before.

I saw it as a black comedy. I certainly didn't find it depressing. It was a great character study.
