How is Surrey?

So, I know that the little cottage house is not actually real, but I would like to know how the way of living is in surrey. Are the people who live there nice? Does it have a good environment? I know it is very expensive, but besides that what are the pros and cons of living there?

reply

Great question(s)! I would love to know the answers as well

Surrey is expensive, but like most expensive places there are "ordinary" areas that aren't as dazzling but more affordable. It's a lovely place though.

reply

Recently, much of it was under water and without electricity.

It's expensive, rather like any semi-rural county within commuter range of a big metropolis. Kate's cottage looks more like it's in The Cotswolds in Oxfordshire. TBH it doesn't really ring true that a young single professional who works in the city would be living in an isolated rural cottage;she would more likely be living in London or at least one of the dormitory towns/villages. The first thing I thought was "How can she afford a dream honeysuckle cottage within range of London by herself? Young journalists don't earn that much, do they?" But hey, it's Hollywood.

reply

I thought the same thing, but it was a family location. She said she came from there to Arthur, so maybe we can fill in a gap and assume that it was in the family or something?

I love visiting Surrey. My most recent trip was to re-visit the area to go to Hampton Court Palace. Two visits, 30 years apart.

Hard to answer the OP as everywhere is pretty much what you make of it yourself. I would love to think that if I were going to live in the US i would go for somewhere in the New England area or Vermont. It is just what appeals to you and catches your imagination.

I know we walked the same route she did going home and the train ride was 40 minutes, so that much is accurate enough.

reply

It depends where you go in Surrey, for example Surbiton now falls under Greater London and it takes 20mins to get to central London via train.
Guilford can be an hour and has cottages like that.

reply

Yes-Family money.
Jude Law's character said the family was in publishing his mother was a big deal at Random House so he always knew he wanted to be an editor. His degree is in Literature which also points to family money.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

reply

Why does a degree in literature mean family money?!?

reply

Because it's not a degree that you can get a job with

I was recently in the very same pub that was featured in the film. It's The White Horse in Shere. They even have a framed picture of the film hanging on the wall in the pub.
Shere is only 30 miles from central London. There are lots of country lanes and back roads all around that area of Shere/Gomshall/Chilworth/Peaslake/Holmbury St Mary/Abinger/Coldharbour, some with cottages 'kind of' similar to that although not the same of course.

I'm from the Surrey/South London border, Croydon to be exact. Surrey is expensive. Its so close to London and is seen as a really desirable area.

Its actually a very big county and I am really only familar with the top/more south London part to be honest, where I live is still classed as greater London but if you go further into Surrey like where I suspect Iris is supposed to be from, its a lot more rural and pretty. But being in the South of England it certainly doesnt snow like that at Christmas unfortunately.

In terms of whether people are nice or not, hmmm jurys out on that one. Us southerers, espcially from the London area are never seen as friendly in comparison to people from the North of England, I know this to be a complete misconception, but I do find people from Kingston, Richmond in Surrey to be extremley snootish. Just my experience.

The part in the film where Cameron drives the mini in town, was filmed in Godalming, Surrey where my family live. It is a lovely old town.

reply

Oh Godalming is lovely I agree

reply

Just adding my bit: I would agree that it is family money that allows both Iris and Graham to live like they do. Since the family is all in some type of "reading" occupation, I would suspect that the money didn't come from the parents' generation, but is the grandparents of Iris and Graham, or even older money.

And, Iris does seem like the type of young person that would enjoy living where she does and who would be miserable and a "fish out of water" in London proper.

As to the car, I would suspect that she (Iris) commutes by train and walks from the station for the same reasons she lives where she does - she seems practical and without frills, and it would make practical sense to commute for work via train and tool around her immediate home location in the mini for groceries and local errands. There is probably a small area behind the cottage where the car is kept.

Believe me, there is plenty of money in the publishing world! If you're a big-wig in Yale or Penguin or Random House you will easily be on £100,000. It sounds like Graham is the MD so I think he's pretty well rolling in it.

Iris not so much. But if Graham's father was MD before him then Iris will have money from them no doubt, for tax purposes!!
