The characters

Your favourite and least favourite?

Personally I liked the portrayal of the male characters in the film more than that of the female characters.

First of all, this has become my favourite Christmas movie and I watch it several times during the year.

My absolute favourite character is Graham and this is the film that made me fall in love with Jude Law. That he's not afraid to show his emotions about anything makes him so endearing. More importantly, if a man looked at me the way Graham looks at Amanda, well, what wouldn't one do for that?!

My least favourite is Maggie. She's a user, a hanger-on and was with Miles for any number of reasons, none of them good; she didn't deserve him. Although if she wasn't such a terrible person, Iris and Miles may not have gotten together!

Very difficult to argue with your choices!

Personally, I love happy endings all tied up in a neat little bow! However, I love this movie and how all four main characters learn something very important - all because they switched houses for the holiday.

Amanda has everything - successful career and all the accoutrements - but she's totally miserable and unemotional. She's a workaholic and because she doesn't give her relationships priority she suffers the consequences.
Iris has been in a one-way relationship going nowhere for years and the guy treats her badly because she allows him to.
Miles chooses all the wrong women - for all the wrong reasons and gets hurt in the process every time.
Graham is a widower who keeps secrets and doesn't allow women into his real life because he's afraid that it will spoil it - so he goes from woman to woman.

In the end...
Amanda finally gets in touch with her emotions and there is promise of something really worthwhile - but they will have to work for it. She also learns there is more to life than work.
Iris realizes her self-worth finally and stops letting Jasper treat her badly. She has a new friend in Miles and possibly mutual love.
Miles, much like Iris, learns to value his own self-worth. He meets Iris and becomes friends with her and if there is no romantic spark with Iris - they at least have become friends for life and he will probably try being friends with a woman before he invests his emotions next time.
Graham lets down the protective wall created by the death of his wife and finds that love can happen again if he opens his heart and lets someone in.

I know - I'm a hopeful romantic! I also love Nancy Meyers' rom-coms. I never tire of this movie - no matter the season!

XS, your post was spot on. I wish I had written it!

A lot of people (including posters on this board) are critical of the KW/JB "relationship" saying it lacks chemistry. The point that they consistently miss is that through virtually the entire film, their characters are emotionally involved with other people.

They are neither free as in Amanda's lack of emotion to her last relationship which Graham's open affection thaws, nor are they free in the way Graham is to choose the person to let in on his "real" but secret life which Amanda does by being open and through chance a person who he feels could love his kids. The Iris/Miles "relationship" is more founded on friendship than the other but by breaking with their current "partner" they see in each other a chance to connect to another who shares their own values.

Its pointless really to speculate on a fictional relationship and wonder whether it could last, but nothing in my personal experiences of friends in long distance relationships leads me to believe other than that both couples could have had a chance of happiness.

Thanks Hero, for the lovely compliment! It's easy to talk about something that brings such pleasure.

I feel like all of the actors really embodied their characters and were perfect - from Edward Burns as the cheating boyfriend (I wish he'd had a bigger role but the character arc was satisfied) to Eli Wallach (such a treasure) and everyone in between - including the cameo by Dustin Hoffman).

I sort of disagree that KW/JB didn't have chemistry. I think they had a lot of chemistry but didn't act on it because their hearts were invested in others. Right off the bat when they meet and JW is checking her eye for debris from the "Santa Ana" winds, while JW is writing "Arthur's Theme", at the lunch counter, at the video store and many more times. They just didn't pursue it romantically. Plus, it's ridiculous to assume that a beautiful woman wouldn't be attractive to a less attractive man or vice versa. Outward looks aren't the only thing that makes a person sexy or attractive. And his girlfriend was really pretty too - so obviously he can attract many a pretty girl/woman.

So many posters on these boards, IMO are under the age of 18 and haven't lived long enough to have developed adult experiences or attitudes. I'm sure their commenting will evolve over time but unfortunately, they will only replaced by MORE of that age group - not that there's anything wrong with young people - I was one once! By that time, they will be rolling their eyes at their former selves, much like we do!!

I didn't think the KW and JB characters were 'just friends' at the end... I thought they definitley had something going!

Does your mummy know you are using the internet little one?.

Also, wash your mouth out child, you are too young (at least your posting style suggests it) to call people names...

Now be a good kid, and go back to reading a nice kiddies story.

I love this film (except for some scenes). I see it every christmas.

But I have to say that Jack Black (who I find good in other films) doesn´t really do it for me here. His facial expressions when he´s gonna be funny just looks odd to me in this movie. But that´s just my personal opinion, of course.

To the characters: Graham is a favourite , and my least favourite is..... hm... hard to say! I can´t think of one.

Btw, I love the Chemistry between Law and Diaz. They are not my favourite actors, but I like them in this Movie!
